I never thought I would see someone make a full swing as powerful and balanced as tiger in his heyday. But rorys swing looks so.....perfect. I wonder how his club/ball speed and other factors compare to tiger at his prime.

Tournament wins, no comparason. But his effortless power and control, you can't deny he is on another level versus his peers.

I have to say that even though I know a lot of the analysts are saying this performance is better than Tiger's in 2000, I disagree. Rory's scores are better, but when you look at the US Open in 2000, Tiger was the only player under par. That's just absurd when you think about Tiger being the only player that week to beat the course in such a large magnitude. I'm not taking away anything from Rory in any way as this is quite an accomplishment, however, I still think that Tiger's performance was still more dominating.

I agree. Doesn't really feel like a us open this year, maybe the greens are too slow or soft?

I also think part of it is because a lot of guys are realizing that they have to take risks, with Rory so low. Maybe if you take Rory out of the field the rest of the pack is a few strokes higher.

No question, Rory is playing lights out. Too bad it is not on a "typical" US Open set-up. You have varying degrees of rough, soft greens, forward tees, and the most players ever to be under par for a round 3. While this is record breaking, it is not Brookline circa 63 or Shinnecock in 94, but more like a Kemper Open. Still, Rory is lapping the field for sure.

Hypothetical situation:

Imagine if Rory hadn't shot that 80 at Augusta and had gone on to win. He then goes to the next major and leads by 8 shots after 3 rounds. He would likely go to #1 with a win. Would the golfing world then consider Rory having the possibility of being more successful than Tiger? His would have gone 3-3-1-1 in his last 4 majors (Assuming a win tomorrow)

We'll see what happens tomorrow, but so far, lots of similarities. Woods 2000 Pebble and McIlroy 2011 Congressional--both look so in the zone, comfortable and confident. Draining lots of 6-10 foot putts. McIlroy appears to play quicker, as if playing on instinct, while Tiger has always been more deliberate. However, in 2000 I had no doubt in my mind that Tiger would ever lose a lead on the final round, but I feel that McIlroy has a bit of Greg Norman in him.

Well by tomorrow nite, it will be three, including one major with lots of this season left. Plus he is just 22.

Sorry - Rory is not close to the level Tiger was.

Tiger dominated. Rory has won once on the PGA Tour thus far. Tiger in 2000 was the beginning of the Tiger Slam.

Sorry, no comparison IMO

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lnDG7xeBlSw

2:22 in you can see a pretty smooth swing

and we can't forget Tiger's ability to produce shots out of the worst possible situations. Tiger shot -12 on a tougher course where no other player broke par. Congressional is no doubt tough, but look at all the players with rounds in the 60's.

With congressional there are plenty of birdie opportunities, Pebble Beach in 2000? Good luck. Birdies came from perfect tee shots, perfect irons and perfect putts.

2000 US Open was the most dominating accomplishment by a golfer in recent history

Don't get me wrong, Rory is talented as hell. But not comparable.

What everyone witnessed in the Tiger era is extremely rare...they don't come round often.

No matter the hype ( Ty Tryon )

And like uttexas said, no one EVER had a doubt in their mind about Tiger winning - you an not say the same about Rory.

What everyone witnessed in the Tiger era is extremely rare, and it would be a unrealistic to think we already have another player of that standard right now

I was talking more about the natural effort of his swing. Tiger is one of the greatest ever, but he swung so hard he destroyed his leg. Rory was blasting it by mickelson without even trying.

Let's calm down though. Three professional wins is still nothing. He is a very talented player with a great golf swing, and I think he'll end up having a Mickelson-level career which is still tremendous and one of the best golfers in history...but do I think he'll ever see Tiger's level of dominance or success? Hell no.

Mickelson? How many opens does he have? Rory will pass him in majors in five years or less. Three wins with a us open by 22 is nothing? Yes, let's calm down now...

Hasn't Rory been on Tour several years now?

Let's not act like Mickelson has done nothing. Does it really matter that he doesn't have a U.S. Open? Not really considering he has a few other majors. I really don't think Rory will win more majors than Phil...That's an impressive resume.

To even start talking about McIlroy and Tiger in the same sentence is just ridiculous at this point - that is all.

man I wish Tiger could somehow get back to that body frame in 2000 and gather that swing back up.  I would call it the most perfect swing....purely simple with a ton of power and precision.

My philosophy on golf "We're not doing rocket science, here."

    • Even injured Tiger had a more impressive career than Jack against much stiffer competition. This was confirmed by Jack quite a few times. You want to ignore that, but it’s fact.
    • Day 201 3-5 Wider backswing and higher. Practiced consisted of mostly backswing today. Wrist arching through downswing still a focus on full shots with a pause.  Will probably have a 2nd practice tonight blending wider backswing into more of full swing without pause at the top.
    • Scooted over to the range today in the rain to see how it goes when I try to hit one. The rehearsals I think look reasonable, but then get worse when I try to hit the ball. I think it’s better than it was but still a ways to go. Including the rehearsals in these two videos. One dtl and one fo. I still don’t understand what I need to do on the way down to stop that fugly shoving outside of the hands. Seems unlikely that will just disappear when I get the backswing position right. I have a feeling that lack of understanding of the next step might be holding me back some.
    • Of course, injuries suck, but that's no excuse. jack was competitive from 1962-1984 or so. 1979 wasn't very good sure (first winless season) but every other season during that timeline he was in the top 16 in the money list. That is a crazy long time. And notice I didn't even include 1986 because he was "only" 34th in the money list that year and 43rd the year prior.  Like you said yourself Tiger was injured what felt like more often than not post 2009. When he was healthy enough to play a full season he did really well (2012-2013, and 2018-2019).  I like Tiger too but you are seriously downplaying what Nicklaus did. Nicklaus was not normal, he is a crazy outlier just like Tiger.  The funny thing is Jack played a reduced schedule compared to his peers and yet he still played way more than Tiger up to his final win. I got him at 477 excluding amateur starts up to 1986 while Tiger is 364 if we exclude his am starts, 345 up to his last win at the Zozo. Just pointing that out because you said he only played a handful of events in those later years.
