I have been reading some threads about slide and bumps and just would like to be more clear for myself if you guys would help.

1. What is the difference between slide and bump?

2. From what I understand you bump your hip forward, BUT your head remains where it is on the top of back swing / address, correct? Which gives the sensation of somewhat leaning back?

3. I have been hitting my driver way too low or with a fade, so my swing must have changed and I'm doing something bad again.

the first video, I see that this person moved his head and top body to the front with the hips too.

the 2nd video, he just  bumps his hips and lower body, but his upper body and head remains.

So what do you all think? I need to start doing the right first move consciously and right now, I know I;m just using my arms and shoulders and hope that

I clear my lower body naturally. And it's not happening anymore.

Thanks for the vid. That first one is really detailed. I'm planning to practice today and see how it feels.

Another question is, with the hip bump and head only moving forward a slightly bit, this'll keep the head / spine angle behind the ball still, correct?

Plus, this won't make me scoop the ball, since my hands will still be infront of the ball?

Moving your shoulders/head forward moves your upper swing center forward. Basically, the club head is attached to the shaft, which is held by your hands. Hands are attached to your arms which are attached to your shoulders. Your head is between your shoulders. So if you move your upper swing center forward (your front shoulder), this encourages you to hit the ball on an in to out path=draw. For a controlled drive, at impact, your front shoulder and hands will be in front of the ball with your head just behind the ball. There's a Luke Donald video on youtube that shows him on the range working on this. Basically, it's an exagerrated move but gives you an idea of what you want to happen. I've been working for about a week now on this. I'm struggling making sure my left hip goes toward the target and not toward the ball. If I make the move right, it's solid contact and great distance and ball flight. If I screw it up it's a weaker push.

1/2 a year ago when I do something like this, I push my ball and I become scared. Must be something else I did wrong,

but I'll definitely try this for sure.

Btw, when I practice this at home just now, it kinda feel like I'm going to scoop the ball or hit it fat.

You must straighten your legs and extend your spine going into impact (see Rickie Fowler). If you don't straighten your legs, you will have to collapse your arms and scoop. The feeling that works for me in the downswing is forward and extend.

After I got the very general feeling of it (trying slow exaggerated swings like Donald) all I focused on was my post leg (left leg). Look at that Fowler picture and also look at Donald right before impact - their left legs straighten, extending the spine (while maintaining spine angle) and then it's just a follow-through to finish.

It's a helluva feeling when you do it close to right - and it's a helluva feeling when it goes wrong

So I'm going to: 1. Hip bump and squares while arms drop  2. Keep head in the same position as possible during the down swing 3. Swing through the ball while straightening the left leg before impact.


try straightening both legs going into impact. really push off your rear foot instep. watch the video of rory mcilroy I posted--see how he almost jumps forward at impact straightening both legs.

A lot of tips out there advise that you throw the right knee laterally towards the left knee.  Moving off of the rear foot inseam is certainly a good way to do that.  Furthermore, I can understand posting up against and moving the left leg straight (ala TW) but I'm not sure about also straightening the right leg as well.

Both of Rory's legs straighten because his body as turned soo much at impact.  Because of this, right after impact, his legs have no choice but to straighten due to the momentum of the swing and his rear tucking waay underneath him.

There isn't many of us who can repeat such an action.  Most of us are best suited staying centered on thge way back and moving forward off of the right inseam (with the right knee moving toward the left) on the way down.  Trying to straighten the right knee too much could cause other issues no?

For a righty, straightening the right leg into impact gets the hips more forward and enables the arms to fully extend at impact (creates more leverage) It's ok to have a little bend in the right knee at impact as long as the vast majority of weight is on the left side. As someone who flipped for years and one who also knows what the slide and extend feels like a la an SnT instructor, you're going to feel a serious stretch if you do the slide and extend correctly unless you were a former ballet dancer.

I just got back from playing 3 holes (quit due to a group of 4 kids hitting 10 yard shots each time) and Driving range.

Results:

On the range:

1. My driving is miserable.

2. My irons are the same.

3. Wedges, I'm hitting them all perfect??? Even with the sensation of hip bump and arm drop??

I hit a lot of fat shots... lots of them... and I kept duck hooking my driver

When I do hit a decent shot, it's flush and straight and my divot is very thin with irons.

On the course...

1. Driving: I hit 2 draws and 1 push fade. 250 yds and around 278yds on the draws. 0.o

2. Irons: Topped both my 6i and 8i all and pulled them. Who knows how many worms I burned...

3. Short game: Good as usual. Maybe even better today...

This is ridiculous.. . . I feel like I don't know how to swing anymore.

Also, when I bump my hip and intentionally drop my arms vertically, it feels as if I'm going to hit a big fat ground several inches behind the ball...

which I did with my driver on numerous occassions ..


When this happens to me it's usually because I'm allowing my hips to shift back on my backswing.  Not sure it's of any help but just thought I'd throw it out there.

You mean like when you raised your arms a bit too far up and you ended up with a slight reverse pivot?


Please post some videos of your swing (face on and down the line). What you feel you are doing and what you are actually doing can be very different.

Yes, but also feeling like I was rotating, but actually shifting instead which would put me too far behind the ball on my downswing.

    • I'm bad about taking pictures, but here are a few Hole 1 on Duke, looking toward the green. The elevated green with bunkers surrounding it was a theme. The other theme was pin placements that were tough - this one is pretty far left. There were basically no easy pins on this day.     Hole 3 at Pine Needles. An extremely cool hole. Hole 5 at Pine Needles. The picture doesn't do the green site justice. Green of 6 at Southern Pines. A wild green, and a really cool setting at the edge of the property: Hole  Tee shot on 5 at Tobacco Road. Flag is on the flag, the huge fairway is to the right. Hole 8 at Tobacco Road. Downhill, medium length par 3 with this pin in the front part of the green. Really cool looking shot. A look at the pin placement and cottage on Tobacco Road 14. I hit one of my best shots of the trip here, to about 15 feet.
