Hello all,

I am just really starting to pick up the game of golf and am trying to hit the ball first with my Irons but have trouble doing so.  I tend to have my divot behind the ball.  Is there any tricks or ways I can get myself to hit the ball first then take my divot.

thanks,

It's really hard to say because we haven't seen your swing.  In general, I'd say to keep your weight as forward as possible.  You'd be well served to check out the YouTube videos put up by the Golf Evolution as well as taking a look at the Stack & Tilt Book and DVDs.

Without seeing your swing hard to say, but good chance you are not getting your weight back on your left side.  If you hang back on your right side on the downswing the bottom of your swing arc will be behind the ball and not in front of the ball.

you guys were right went out last night and tried to keep more weight on my left side and hit my irons much crisper and with better lines.  Thank you, it is still a work in progress but definitely helped

If you are truly just starting out, then pay no attention to the youtube videos. Trust me, there are far too many out there and you will do more harm than good trying to sort out what's what. I like S&T; but that's just me. Spend the money on video lessons is the best advice I could give...

Turn your shoulders, keep your left eye on the ball, keep your left arm as straight as you can, don't try to kill the ball.  Not really tips or tricks, but those don't exist.  Only method and practice.

Weight on the left foot, sliding the hips forward is a very good place to start.

Hey sdgolfer,

I was in the same situation as you are in. This is what i did to fix the situation :

1.) Gary Players drill : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HnQ6RHepJgk

2.) Address the ball. Now without changing your stance . Look at a spot 4 inches ahead of the ball on your target line and make this your "new" ball position. Do not even look at your real ball anymore....it will distract you. Your swing thought should be, i have to hit the ground at my "new" ball position.

3.) Feel : Don't just swing the club while doing 1.) or 2.). Feel what your body is doing. Here is a hint : It has to get on to the left side to do either 1.) or 2.) properly.

Try these and let me know what happens.

There are far too many YouTube videos out there with conflicting information that would do harm to his swing... that's why I recommended ones put up specifically by Golf Evolution.

the simple thing is to look at the LEADING half of the ball. Don't look at where you want to hit the ball, look at the front of the ball or just ahead of that depending on your current state of 'fatness'.

    • A hair under 190. It was pretty downhill, though, so I think we were playing between 180-185 to the pin. My 6 iron went 187 according to shot scope and ended up 18 feet away.
    • That's a tough pin on 14 at TR, had to make the hole play much longer, how far was that shot? I've only played that hole with a front pin.
    • No, but I spent (marginally) less time in the trees at Southern Pines, so it definitely played wider for me 😆. It definitely felt wider.
    • Have you measured? 🙂
    • I'm bad about taking pictures, but here are a few Hole 1 on Duke, looking toward the green. The elevated green with bunkers surrounding it was a theme. The other theme was pin placements that were tough - this one is pretty far left. There were basically no easy pins on this day.     Hole 3 at Pine Needles. An extremely cool hole. Hole 5 at Pine Needles. The picture doesn't do the green site justice. Green of 6 at Southern Pines. A wild green, and a really cool setting at the edge of the property: Hole  Tee shot on 5 at Tobacco Road. Flag is on the flag, the huge fairway is to the right. Hole 8 at Tobacco Road. Downhill, medium length par 3 with this pin in the front part of the green. Really cool looking shot. A look at the pin placement and cottage on Tobacco Road 14. I hit one of my best shots of the trip here, to about 15 feet.
