Well I must be the only one who has wasted shots with short irons. I can't tell you how many times I've busted a drive 280-300 and yank a wedge or chilly dip a 9 iron from the middle of the fairway. Maybe thats why my short game has gotten so good. I have a lot of practice.

There is an interesting article in Golf magazine this month about hidden offset in many irons. The shorter the club (Wedges and short irons) the more effect. They gave the exact same example. Big drive followed by a pull.

I do the same thing. I can't tell you how many good drives I have blown with bad second shots. For me it's more of a breakdown than poor short irons. I usually feel great over a wedge or 9 iron. It seems to only be when I have a chance to really stick one.

if i could chip better,{mental midget around the greens}, i'd be about a 6 or 7 handicap on my course. i very rarely get in any big trouble, just missing the green, like most amateurs.
i plan on working on this more seriously this year, but if it happens great!!
all of us could lower their scores from around the greens anyway!!

I would say it would mostly be long approach for me, but really I lose shots all over the place due to my inconsistent swing.

On a short par 4 on Saturday, I ripped a 3 wood down the middle, hit the prettiest little 65 yard wedge to 4 feet, and 3 putted for bogey. *throws self out window*

It was my only 3 putt of the day too. Stupid game.

I picked Driving. I had a graphic demonstration today that reinforced that selection. I hit only 5 fairways today off the tee... and I alos hit the green in regulation and made par on all 5 of those holes. Of the 7 Driving fairways I missed, I only hit 2 greens. And half of those missed fairways resulted in a bogey or a double. The saves were more from good chipping than anything else.

As a slight counterpoint, one of the missed fairways (a par 5) resulted in a birdie, but the miss was minimal with a clear shot and a good angle to the green. I hit a great 2nd just 15 feet from the hole in the rough for an easy chip and 1 putt.

I have to say putting is my bane. Just last week I played with a group of guys, was putting for eagle on 2 holes..score? I par'd one and bogey'ed the other. Just can't get that "feeling" with my putter. I seem to always miss right. Any input on that?

Left eye above the ball. And I mean really above the ball!!

How to check? Line up and let somebody else hold a second golfball directly under your left eye and then drop it. If it doesn't hit the golfball on the ground your stance is incorrect. When you'r right handed reverse this instruction

My chipping is awful, period. For some reason, I will top the wedge while trying to chip it on the green, and watch in frustration as the ball scoots across off the other side of the green. Either that, or I'll chili dip it, the club will stop dead in the ground and the ball's only flubbed a few feet forward.

Then, there's just those putts which I simply mis-cue, and a decent two-putt becomes a three-putt.

And lastly, I take a lot of strokes off the tee box, because I spray the driver--sometimes I'll hit it so far off to one side that I won't even bother to try and play it, I'll just rehit right there and then.

It's no brain storm that when I have a good driving round, I have a good scoring round. There are plenty of occasions I have a good round chipping putting and with the irons only to add up to a bad score because my first iron shot or two have come from under trees.

My chipping has been HORRIBLE as of late. I've been trying to chip with my 60 degree lob wedge, but the lies are just bad around here since it's been so cold, no grass has been growing.

So I went to the 52 degree Srixon wedge, and it's gotten worse. Even when I stay down and don't pick my head up to quick, I still end up hitting it thin and skulling it on SUCH EASY SHOTS. I can't find whats wrong. I've had my coaches look at it and they don't really know what's wrong either. All my mechanics are right. I could've easily shot a 40 today, but instead, I shot a 48.

I voted for Course Management but it's a tie between that and putting. Lately I've totally lost all touch on the green.

I'll go with pitching, say from 25 yards in. I usually get it on the green but often I've left myself a long lag putt. Of course the only solution is practice, practice, practice.

I really enjoy chipping. I'll bump-and-run with a 7 or 8 iron instead of pitching when the course allows. Sometimes I would rather be off the edge of the green with my 8 iron than on the green with a long lag putt.

Currently pitching and short wedge game are probably costing me the most stokes. Right at about 90 to 20 yards. I'm not terrible at it but I often give myself long putts and miss a lot of oppurtunities where I should have 10 foot putts for birdies or par saves. The next part of my game that could use the most improvement would have to be long approach shots about 190-220 yards.

Fore!

    • Yes. If you choose to take the ball out of the bunker instead of taking maximum available relief… it costs a stroke.
    • I got another one today....Number 17. Par 5 that has water left and right on the layup. I smacked a drive down the left side and got a little lazy on the layup and fanned my 6 iron. With 112 to a crowned green I got it to 3 feet and birdie!  Only 5 and 15 is left for this year!
    • Maybe I didn’t explain this properly. Back and front can be confusing.  There was no place in the bunker that didn’t have 2-3 inches of rain water in it, except for a small spot on the slope nearest the pin. If I had dropped there I would be moving 6-7 feet closer to the hole. Since my ball was just inside the bunker, farthest side from the hole, I dropped one club length backward, which brought me out of the bunker. I could not have hit from that deep of water. Are you saying I would have had to take a penalty stroke due to rain water?
    • Day 550, May 5, 2024 Got a good hour in with a typical (for me) two-stick setup: pool noodle angled in front, yardstick on the ground angled 45° behind me.
    • Day 130: Cinco de Mayo Day 7/24 of Full Speed Spectrum training. Difficult training day after struggling to certify my warmup yesterday, and today. Finished 13 mph lower than my training speed on Thursday. Hope to hit some balls today.
