Time for new set of Irons

Hey guys,

im new here, ive been golfing since the age of 9 im 31 now.

the last few years ive been using a set of Ben Hogan apex ftx irons but they are getting quite worn.

i figure now is a good time to buy a new set of irons since there are alot of products on the market that are very appealing!

please suggest me a few good sets of irons, im a decent iron player so they dont have to be too forgiving, though a little forgiveness is always good to have.

i will need a stiff shaft, i will need to be able to shape the ball a bit and i dont have any trouble getting the ball up.

oh and budget is around 200-300 dollars, hopefully i can find a decent set of irons on ebay or somehting in that price range.

i only need a 5-9 iron set

You might try Callaway Preowned and look for some X20 Tour irons. Today CP has a 3-PW set shafted in DG S300 (high kickpoint, can keep ball lower when you want).

Also had a 5-PW set in Project X 5.5 Flighted, but they're 1* flat and 1/2" short on the shaft. Other PX 6.0 variations in other sets, but 6.0 is a bit stiff for many people.

X20 Tours can be bent a little bit for lie if need be, whereas X22 family irons (regular and Tours) cannot.

Buying from CP assumes you know what shaft you want, along with your flex and lie "recipe" for clubs. Hope this helps.

Who told you that the X22's can't be bent? Do you mean by a pro shop?

Yes. Most pro shops won't try it. Look at the Q&A; on Callaway Preowned for details.

Why not just browse people's signatures, since that's what everyone recommends. I'd recommend the Cleveland TA7s or CG4s, but I've only hit the long irons. Any blade or players type iron should work if you're only looking for the 5-P.

Must be they have molds for the various degrees of lie at the factory? I was told by a Callaway rep I needed 2 up on some X-22's.

I think the deal is that most of the time they can be bent, but occasionally they will break.  If the pro shop breaks one they have to buy you a new one, if the Callaway factory worker breaks one they just throw it in the recycle bin and get another out of the box.

I would say it's just the opposite.   "I'll attempt to adjust it, but there is a risk of it breaking.  If it breaks, you were warned, and I am not responsible.  Now, do you still want me to bend it?"

Or that.  Either way it's unlikely that Callaway has it's suppliers make up other molds for different lie angles.  The forges that make the heads have a fair amount of error no matter how good they are.  However companies with good QC do measure, sort and segregate heads as they come in so that  heavy or light heads go together in a set.  I don't know why they wouldn't put all the 1* upright heads together and so on.

All that is of course completely off topic so...  $300 for a set of 5 irons is $60 a club, you should be able to find a pro shop that can get in that range with a model you can try out.

If you want to go on-line, Global golf, 3balls, and 2ndswing all are shops with good rep's that do business on ebay or through there sites.  2ndswing has a 5-PW set of Bridgestone J-33 in your range.

If you want to try something a little less pedestrian Golfworks can put a Maltby head like the Tricept TU ($18), or the TE forged ($25), on the shaft and grip of your choice for $10 a club.  Depending on the shaft you want, that would stay in your price range.

There are other on-line custom builders like Victorycustomgolf that may not be able to fit you personally but could supply irons to your specs in your price range, (Victory carries the Alpha line, I've never played them but they have a great rep).  The fact that you're only looking for 5 clubs opens up some possibilities.
