I have a 2008 Taylormade Hybrid #4 (21 degree)

I find this club to be the least forgiving club in my bag.

I generally hit this club 75 yards. Since I find it so unforgiving, I will opt to be short with a 5 iron or hit a 5 wood lightly. My taylormade 5 wood (3 wood as well) as so forgiving if I leave the club face open a bit I still get distance, almost 90% of normal distance. My hibrid, if I leave the face open and usually try to fade a shot (or have just hit it poorly) I get about 50 yards forward, 50 yards to the right.

I am wondering it is the way I hit the club or the club itself?

But mor importantly I am looking for a hybrid that has the forgiveness of my woods. I am always hear people tell me how great hybrids are! how easy they are to hit out of the rough and off the deck. I find neither to be true with this club. I get no help out of the rough and most shots with this club feel like I am hiting the ball with a 2x4.

I know people speak highly of adams hybrids.

So I am just putting it out there, what are some hybrids that will feel like my woods?

Or could it possible that the 2008 taylormade is just a junk club?

As far as I know, the TaylorMade hybrids have always been thought of as pretty forgiving.  Right now in my bag I have the Wilson FYbrid HS (3 and 4) and I think they are great... If you want to give another hybrid a try I think you could do a lot worse than those.  Another thought is, if you hit the 5 wood so well you may want to look into a 7 wood... not everybody hits a hybrid well and if you like woods, go that route.

The PING G15 Hybrid is nice. Very forgiving. It’s more like hitting a normal iron that just fly’s off like a hybrid. I personally love my Titleist 909H mind. Tried out loads of hybrids and that’s the one I settled on.

The other thing to remember is to attack your hybrids like you attack your irons.

The main rule of hitting a hybrid is to swing with the same sequencing and mechanics as you do with your 7-iron.

I feel your pain when it comes to hybrids.

I hit my 4i and 5w fairly well but when it comes to hybrids I just struggle.

So far since Jan I have gamed:

Taylormade 19* '07 Rescue

Nickent 24* 3dx hybrid

Ping G15 17*

and now playing a Ping G15 20* hybrid.

The TM was the easiest to hit for me.  The Ping 20* when struck right can be a thing of beauty but I just haven't mastered it yet.

Sort of regret trading the '07 rescue in.

I have a TM Burner Superfast hybrid and for me it's very forgiving; far more forgiving than my driver or 3w that's for sure!

The only thing I can think of that may be hampering you is how you address the ball with it. For me I set up like an iron shot rather than a wood shot if I'm hitting it off the tee and I'll tee it the same height as an iron shot too. Often I'll play it even further back in my stance if it's a trouble shot I'm attempting and I don't want the face pulled open by rough.

Give the Cobra Baffler a try.  My iron set came with 3-5 hybrids which are very similar to the Cobra Bafflers and they are rather forgiving with decent distance.  My ego caught up with me about a month ago and I bought a Titleist 910H to replace my Cobra 3H and I'll tell you it is MUCH less forgiving.  It feels and sounds great on a clean shot but it definitely lets you know when your swing and address were less than perfect.

I had problems with a Walter Hagen hybrid club a few years back. I switched to Nickent, which in my opinion was more forgiving, but I still had problems striking the ball in the rough. One day an old timer recommended that I choke up on the club and contact the ball earlier in my swing than I had been, worked for me.

I've gone through a lot of different hybrids trying to find one that was forgiving and consistent. Ended up with Nickent 4DX model. I wasn't sure at first, thinking Nickent was more of a players club and would be too much club. Not the case - easy enough to hit consistently. Maybe you can find them on e-bay at a good price. Heard good things about their 5DX models as well. Good luck.

I've been looking at a hybrid also and I found that I liked the Adams V3, Cleveland Mashie and Launcher DST, and Cobra Baffler.  I haven't decided yet.  The titleist 910H was nice but not better than those three, and not for the extra cost.  I just don't hit Taylor Made well and don't like it.  I've heard good things about the Nike VR hybrid and many like Ping, but I just find there is too much offset.

I adjusted my 910H and went back to the range today.  After a few tweaks, all I can say is this club is one of the best I have used for my swing.  I'm now looking to buy a 21º and perhaps even a 24º but will hold off on the 24º until I get a feel for my new irons.  They are rather pricey, yes, but the adjustability is a big benefit IMO.  I also like the heavy swing weight relative to other hybrids including the Cobras I recommend.

I have a 19º Titleist 909H and i love it. I've been toying with the idea of getting a 910H because of the adjustability. If it feels anything like my 909 i think i'll get it. Would you recommend it? and have you hit the 909H in comparison?

ADAMS Black Super Hybrid...like a smaller fairway metal head w/ALDILA Voodoo shaft.  This club is the most forgiving hybrid I have ever used and I've test driven quite a few (Taylormade, PING, Titliest, Nike, Nickent & Cobra)...once you try this club your search will be over.

I went and hit a bucket of balls on wed, and spent most of it hammering my #4 22 degree taylormade hybrid.

I must say I had gone to the driving range/golf shop with the intention of purchasing a new hybrid. However I was hitting my old Taylormade burner really well.

I moved the ball up in my stance, just left of center and I hit it more like an iron than a sweep swing as I hit with my woods.

Although one of the large problems I have always had is hitting my hybrid out of the rough, I find this club just doesnt get through the rough as well as I would hope.
But for the time being I am going to have to just work with the taylormade burner and wait until the price of something more forgiving goes down!

The TM Burner Superfast should already be pretty forgiving anyway. Could be you just need to practice with it more.

The rule I normally have in my head is the deeper in trouble you are, the further back you should play your ball. For my Superfast hybrid I played it just right of center in most rough shots with the idea that I want to try and contact the ball first, ground second to avoid the turf opening/closing the face and duffing the shot. The other thing to bear in mind is that sometimes the rough is "too" rough and a wedge may be in order to hit the ball nice and high out of trouble.

I have not hit a 909H.  After the adjustment, I am very pleased with my 910H.

+1 on Ping G15s

I really like my Ping G15 Hybrids.  I swing them exactly like an iron so I don't need to develop a sweeping swing or any other swing pattern that's different than my irons.  I don't think that's completely true of hybrids that more closely resemble fairway woods.  Not in my limited experience anyway.

I bought my G15 hybrids earlier this summer and have really become more consistent with them.  I'm now planning to replace my 5i with a hybrid because I need all the help I can get with my long game.  I will say that if the ball is sitting down in really heavy rough, I have learned to just "take my medicine" and use a more lofted iron and advance the ball as far as I can and get it onto the fairway.

    • No rain while I was out (9am to 11:30am). Fairly pleasant for a late November day in the Mitten.
    • Day 56 - 2024-11-25 Did the BAD Challenge and hit a bunch more other little shots. This was one of the closer shots.
    • 70 today. The number looks good but, the course is a par 67 (5,110 yards, 64.3/115.). While the 70 took quite a few good shots to achieve, I am not counting that as shooting my age.
    • Played our town’s executive course this morning. Everything is closing but for now Huron Hills remains open. #13 is shaped like an upside down backwards L (dogleg left). Only 231 yard par 4. Dogleg has a tree guarding the corner and a sand bunker guards the green for those cutting the dogleg. Tiny green. About 10 years ago or more I would try to cut the dogleg. The hole is so short that even if one tangled with the tree or was bunkered, par was likely and birdie was still on the table. Now in my 70’s, I just hit it straight and try to wedge it close for birdie. Today I screwed up and pulled my drive. I wandered around a bit when my ball was not in the bunker. Finally located it on the approach to the green. Almost chipped in and tapped in the 2 inches for birdie. Best unintentional shot of the week. 😲
