I think the name was pequanaquock or something to that effect golf club in north salem ny. It's great for a no frills cheap ($25 for 18 and a cart) but not what you would expect. 18 holes advertised, really 9 with two teepads. first hole is a 175yrd par 4. i hit pitching wedge, lob wedge. There's trees so its not driveable, basically a horseshoe. Some cool holes though, like a par 3 that you have to hit the green 75ft above you or you'll be SOL. andthe 9th 18th is a 180yrd par 3 across a gorge. Only problem is that the gorge is the place you drive into. And there are signs saying honk to warn golfers. what a great idea.

I had two courses I played when I was younger near my house that were pretty rough just south of Atlanta. One was Flint Acres. We called it Flint Rocks or Flint Pastures most of the time. They actually wound up making the course over and turned it into a nice course. They even changed the name to The Links. I haven't played it in probably ten years though so I don't know how it is now.

The worst course however was called Beaver Lake Golf and Country Club. This one was in the sticks. You knew you were in for a treat when the sign on the door to the club house says "Shirts required inside the club house." That didn't really matter anyway because the pro was always out playing and left a sign on the counter saying he was out and you could pay up when you were done. Another great feature about this course was the train tracks that ran right through the middle. Some times you would have a train come by and you would just wait until it was gone before hitting again.

Gotta agree with "The Rambler" about J C Martin in Erie PA. This 9 holer starts with an uphill par five with zoo animal cages all along the left side, then a 300 yard par four, two 250 yard par fours, and then five consecutive par threes between 170 and 200 yards, all squeezed into a city block. Rubber mat tees, and greens all the same: 10 yard diameter steeply sloped back to front. Despite all this, the regulars all love it and the turf conditions are usually pretty good!

If you're enjoying this thread, check out the book "America's Worst Golf Courses (A collection of Courses Not Up to Par)" by John Garrity. You will actually find several of the courses mentioned above, in the book. Plus it includes a bunch of highly regarded golf courses with some really bad holes.

Deland Country Club - Deland Florida.

Cant say it is the worst golf course I have ever played.  On the positive side the bunkers where in great shape, guess that is where they put all of their maintenance budget . The layout wasn't half bad.

Deland Country Club was the worst conditioned golf course tee to green that I have ever played!!  Tee boxes had knee high weeds, fairways where a mix of sand trap and weed bed.  There was actually a guy using a weed wacker on hole ten fairway... no kidding.

Save your money...

This summer i decided to go play with a friend (who wasn't a serious golfer) and went down to the 9 hole South Portland Municipal Course (in Maine). Greens were small and concrete. The grass on the greens was mixed in with dirt patches. Fairways were mediocre. Although it is a good value for beginners and such, it did not suit my game.

I played a course called Cobb's Creek outside Philly and I have to say it was the most unique golf course to date.  The front nine was quirky doglegs, blind shots, and a near impossible par 3 off a mat with a tree guarding it.  Then for some reason the back nine gets incredibly long with multiple 450 par 4s.  One green had on oak tree overhanging it and there were a million acorns over the green!  I remember hitting a great chip and 20 feet short it bounced straight up in the air.

Big M Country Club in Calera, Alabama.  Back in 2001, I was traveling on business with my boss and we were driving up through the center of Alabama.  We stopped at Capitol Hill in Montgomery, but he was too cheap to play there.  We kept driving and found this place.  It is literally a cow pasture bordering woods.  Read all about it here: http://www.nighthawkpublications.com/journal/journal005.htm

A shot in the fairway was no guarantee that you would find your ball.  Clover in the fairways was damn near ankle deep.

Wayne Golf Course: 9 hole course, most of the tee boxes are just shitty turf mats, and some of the mats are so old they're worn down to the rubber below. the fairways are cut like the first cut at a decent course, and the greens are cut to the length of a nice fairway. also it has terrible drainage so the course is muddy 90% of the time.

Wellington Hills Golf Course: even shittier than wayne, also has turf mats, some of which are worn down to the rubber, fairways are basically rough, greens are really mall and totally messed up. also you have to hit over a busy road on a couple drives, it's ridiculous. i guess the course is already bought out though and they are tearing it out to build a bunch of soccer fields soon....

Hunnington Golf Club, Ocala Fl. The last time I got talked into playing it, there was a gopher digging a hole in the middle of the first green.

TPC Sawgrass, yep the one with the well known 17 hole. I went down with 30 guys and we paid $230 a head. It sucked. The fairways burnt toast only to tee boxes looked green. The fairways had been verti cut and the dead grass bulged along the cut lines.  The for-caddies where as bad as the course. Could not get them to stop taking about themselves and look for our dam golf balls. My favorite hole was #10. IT started with a giant dead bird of some kind being pecked at on the tee box even the forcaddie ignored the mess. Now the club house was nice I split a sandwich with my Buddie and they charged us an extra $10 to do this and they cut our pickle in half. There is nothing special about this place to warrant  the price and the awful service. Head over to Innisbrook  they have 4 great courses you can jump around and play the copperhead course home of Transitions tournament. The Service' food and staff are excellent!

A golf course in Kampala, Uganda.  I forget the name, it was around 1971 that I played it.  The fairways were mostly dirt (dried mud really, very little grass) and very hard.  It hadn't rained in a long time.  The greens were like concrete, extremely hard, fast and irregular.  After a while (too long sadly .....) I realized that the only way to play was to bump-and-run to every green because a pitch shot would never hold, even if it landed in the fringe area.  The ball just bounced and kept on bouncing.  My first few approach shots ended up 20-50 yards beyond the green and of course I went long coming back as well.

It was a bit ridiculous but also quite entertaining after you got over the initial shock-and-awe.  And it was very cheap.  I suspect that I provided some entertainent to my caddie who had probably seen it all before.

I blame the rented clubs for a very high number

Just the fact that there was a golf course in Uganda in '71 is pretty amazing.   Even more amazing was that you were there playing golf.    Was this guy your caddy by any chance?
