A couple buddies and I are thinking of having a guy's weekend getaway somewhere to play golf. We are all pretty new to golf and are basically 100 shooters. But we are lovin the game. We decided we wanted to do a golfing trip this summer but have no idea where to go... any ideas? looking for suggestions... thanks

From Texas? how far? By car or air? Just golf or want more? If you give a little more information it might be easier. Alabama has the Robert Trent Jones Trail. Reno has cooler weather, gambling and shows,(more expensive). I have had summer golf vacations to both of these areas. Enjoyed both. South Alabama heat is similar to Texas, more humidity.

ya we are in Texas but are wanting to fly, not drive. So location isnt a big deal. Are there any big name courses that arent private? Again, Im pretty new to golf, so Im not that aware of whats public, but thought it be kinda cool to play somewhere big.... My wife's boss is a member at the Colonial in Ft. Worth but he said it would still cost me $200 to get on there... I plan to take him up on it one day, but Id like to improve a little first...

Google Tournament Players Clubs and several of those are public. Cog Hill in Chicago is public. So is Pebble Beach. Bethpage in New York. Pebble and Bethpage are very difficult to get on, impossible on weekends.

Don't count out the Tampa Fl area. The TPC in Tampa and World Woods which is a 36 hole course are all out of this world. The TPC will break you, but it's still unbelievable, and Worl Woods is just about one of the prettiest courses you'll ever play.

In Michigan you may want to look up either Treetops http://www.treetops.com/
or Grand Traverse Resort http://www.grandtraverseresort.com/ . Both resports are great. Treetops has servaral courses, "Five distinctly different courses by renowned designers Robert Trent Jones, Sr., Tom Fazio and Rick Smith" and is the location where the famous Par 3 shootout is held. Grand Traverse has three great courses, one is a Jack Nicklaus Signature Course (The Bear, which does live up to its name) and another was designed by Gary Player (The Wolverine). Both resorts popular and have great golf. Northern Michigan in the Summer is great golfing weather and the courses at these resorts are fantastic.

Look into Tree Tops resort in Gaylord, Michigan. I had a tournament on two of the five courses there last year (played 4 of the 5). They have 4 extremely nice golf courses, as well as the Par 3 course that they always have the skins game at. Plus all the beautiful views, and dining facilities they have, its amazing. It's also not that expensive!

Keeping with the Michigan theme, Boyne http://www.boyne.com/Golf/Eight_Courses/index.html has outstanding courses and accomidations. We played there last year on a golf trip and it was fantastic. If you go there try to play Bay Harbor. Garland http://www.garlandusa.com/?page=47 is also a great resort with 4 outstanding courses. We are going there this year.

The only downside is the proximity to a major airport. If you do look at Michigan, fly into Flint, not Detroit. It is a great airport and will save you over an hour of drive time.

I second the recommendation for Bandon. It's pricey, but it's unbelievably nice - a really special and unique place.

VEGAS, baby!
75+golf courses, some dumps (Muni, Craig Ranch) some unbelieveable -Reflection Bay, TPC Summerlin, TPC Canyon
2 different TPC's!

Of course, if you plan to come in summer, better get a time <7:00 AM! Gets hot here!!
Oh, and after the round, there is some various other activities...

you really can't overlook the valley of the sun. 100+ public courses (guessing), almost without exception, all very well maintained. phoenix, scottsdale, fountain hills, tempe, mesa, ahwatukee, gilbert, chandler. too many tracks to start listing. it is pricey at this time of year but the prices will be dropping soon for the season, and some hotels have good packages. there are many other places to go, i guess it all comes down to what you are willing to spend.

Vegas Baby!!! But I wouldn't reccomend it in the summer. I go there for furniture markets every January and July. The golf is great in January but a little hot for me in July. In Vegas check out the Lake Las Vegas Resort. Incredible place with a couple great courses.

    • Complex question. Good players begin pushing forward around P2. Visibly around P3. They're well on their way forward at P4.
    • Still plugging away with the teacher.  I do have a question after working on some drills last night. This is something I should know already but for some reason, I have gotten myself confused. It deals with weight transfer on the downswing. At what point, should that take place?  Should it be early (prior to reaching A4) ?  I ask because in one of my drills  I get to A4, I feel the weight transfer AS my arms drop, and then go.  Now this may be totally normal, but I "feel" like this gets me in a weird timing position and causes me to try and do too much at once.
    • Tentatively in for at least one of those days. My job situation is a bit up in the air at the moment so need to get that sorted out first then I'll know more for sure or not.
