Hope some can help me.

When I do hit the ball, I ONLY swing with my arms.No movement at all in my upper body.

I think these is caused from my bad back. Are there some tip on what I can do? Or just keep on with my odd swing?

I do hit straight and to me not to bad :)

I do in depth, hands on research every time I hit a golf ball on old man with bad backs swings.

There's not much information here to go on.  Are you 23, 53, 83?

Hit it straight..........but not far?   There are ways to salvage a respectable game on the short courses with minimal back strain. (Respectable golf is not about low scores, its about striking the ball well - within your limits.)

Bowling or flying the ball?  (Putting your weight forward and keeping it there will get the ball in the air - but not far.)

Can you "work" your knees? (Swing the way they did with hickory shafts. Check out You Tube.)

You don't turn your hips, but can you slide your hips and drive from the legs? (This can get you on the green with many par 3's.)

Knees straight, back straight, and arms only?  Then become a very good chipper/putter. Don't slow down play hitting it 10 times to the green.  Keep the ball in your pocket until your within range and start playing.

Maybe something here will help?

Sorry but your just wrong

To the OP. Unless you post video I dont know if anyone here will really be able to help you too much. It is not that rare to have a mostly arms swing, It is rare to play well with a mostly arms swing.

I would much rather look stupid and shoot 65 than look great and shoot 95

As a 22 handicap, if one thought golf was about low scores, it would be an even more frustrating game.

Golf is played against a course and the course will always have a lower score that she will not give up. For a 22 handicap and a 2 handicap.

Hitting the ball pretty straight, playing by the rules, keeping pace, having good manners, fitting in with most any 4-some, being able to play most any course... this is respectable golf and a worthy goal for nearly all of us. It was my urgent goal when I was a young man and a 22 handicap. I trust it will become an urgent goal when I get older.

I switched to a Moe Norman swing because I had a bad back. Dig on this site and find some flexibility tests. If you can do those, you can do Moe's swing. You will be long again and it is easy on your back.

Handicap doesn't matter, it's still about lower scores...otherwise you couldn't judge progress as well. Granted a 22's scores are higher than a 2's, but all golfers strive for better scores which will be a result of hitting fairways, hitting it straighter, etc... Of course etiquette is important at any level, but I don't know any golfers that don't desire lower scores. Of course this is just my opinion.

Handicap is irrelevent, a low score for me is 85 a low score for someone else may be a 68 either way the point of golf is to score as low as you can. Not to make yourself look good doing it. If you strive to get better all the things you are talking about will follow. If you play well you wont need to bend the rules to make yourself feel better, you will hit it strait, youll keep pace because you wont spend half your round in the woods looking for balls and youll be able to play any course with any foursome becuase everyone appreciates someone who is quick and tidy. As for good manners Id hope most people have those naturally and dont need to set that as a goal. Golf etiquette is not some super secret code if your not normally an ******* you will probably not piss too many people off.

Golf is a hobby for many and for many others it's a sport played under a clearly (somewhat) defined set of rules. Both sets of golfers are typically on the course at the same time and often in the same group. It's about whatever the individual players say it's about, and as long as those around them are in agreement, the actual scores don't really matter. Not theirs, not yours, not mine, and certainly the OP's. He's looking to play pain free and not get his swing commented on ever time it's his turn to swing. Not sure I understand why anyone would have a problem with that or would try pushing him in another direction.

That's crazy. I've barely just started golfing again and I'm tempted to try that swing.

    • Day 36: back to some mirror work tonight. Need a bit more forearm roll in my feels to help with the shallowing.
    • _sigh_ so close to red text.  Went away for three days, but didn't do a practice morning-of-departure (Friday) nor evening-of-return (Sunday), so I had three misses, back to day one. Day 1, May 4 2026.  At home today, spent nearly an hour in my practice room, hitting about three dozen practice balls, primarily with my 6-iron.
    • Day 254 5-4 Arms off chest in backswing and downswing. Short swing, pause and then hit.  Hit foam balls. Keeping arching of wrist a focus as well.
    • I would think of it in terms of time. The time it takes to get the arm angle into a good position to deliver the club with proper shaft lean. Another component is rotation, but that is also a matter of timing. It relates to how the body stalls to give the golfer time to hit the ball. If you have to get 80+ degrees out of that right elbow in one third of a second versus 50 degrees in the same time then you have to steal time from somewhere. It is usually body rotation. That does not help with shaft lean.  I agree in that amateurs tend to make the swing more complicated than pro golfers.
    • I haven't been able to practice like I wanted and won't for the next week.  1. The weather sucks in Ohio this year. I have been mostly inside hitting foam balls. Just kind of my basic stuff.  2. I woke up last Saturday with a left side rib muscle on fire. If I turned or leaned a certain way it would spasm that almost buckled my knees. I have been taking a break to let that settle. I don't want to get a long term injury. I think I pinched a nerve or just aggravated a muscles.   3. I am going on a mini-vacation to Florida (screw you Ohio weather) with a friend, and rolling that into a work conference I have next week. I will be with out my clubs for a week.  I will be back next in two Fridays to hit the ground running with some warmer temps and better weather in Ohio, hopefully. I would really like to get more out on the course and the range.
