i have joined my first golf club a week ago  and loving it, subbmitted my 3 cards for handicap

popped to the club today, for a cpl of hours short game practice, and looked at the comp board and noticed a stableford comp next sunday, so stuck my name down, in a field of over 30, asst pro says i will more than likely be playing of 27/28 and that my cards will be processed ready for sunday

excited and nervous as its my "first" competition, just going to enjoy it and take in the experience

any first timer tips?

I'd just say have fun and realize that comp golf is a whole different ballgame from a round with your friends, but you'll find that out soon enough. And stableford is weird, never got that format.

Deep breaths, and try to relax. I remember my first USGA qualifier: I was so nervous on the first tee my legs were trembling as I addressed the ball. Almost couldn't swing the club. :) And have a great time!

Remember that in Stableford, one really bad hole isn't going to totally destroy your round.

Pick your ball up when you are "out".

In the race of life, always back self-interest. At least you know it's trying.

I'm just coming up to a year of playing club golf in the UK.

Firstly, remember to putt everything out. No gimmes.

And take advantage of it being stableford. If you're not going to score then pick your ball up, forget that hole and just move onto the next. Unless you have a spectacularly good round then realistically you're going to blob a few holes so don't let it bother you.

It took me a while to get used to playing competition golf, don't set your expectations too high and just play the shot infront of you and you'll be fine.

    • That answers my question.  That feels more natural to me. I'll work on that. Thanks
    • Complex question. Good players begin pushing forward around P2. Visibly around P3. They're well on their way forward at P4.
    • Still plugging away with the teacher.  I do have a question after working on some drills last night. This is something I should know already but for some reason, I have gotten myself confused. It deals with weight transfer on the downswing. At what point, should that take place?  Should it be early (prior to reaching A4) ?  I ask because in one of my drills  I get to A4, I feel the weight transfer AS my arms drop, and then go.  Now this may be totally normal, but I "feel" like this gets me in a weird timing position and causes me to try and do too much at once.
    • Tentatively in for at least one of those days. My job situation is a bit up in the air at the moment so need to get that sorted out first then I'll know more for sure or not.
