I've recently started playing new wedges, a 52 and 56 degree Callaway X-Series Jaws. There certainly has been an adjustment period, as these are the first true wedges i have owned other than those that come in a set of irons. I have noticed that when chipping (not on full swing shots) the ball has been coming off the club and going left of where I am aiming. Could the ball be too far forward in my stance? Or might the club face be closed? I have tried to make sure the club face is at its natural lie (not open or closed).

I would appreciate any tips or advice. Thanks!

Double check your grip and check it with the same forward press you would have at impact.  For me, when I grip down the shaft, the grip can tend to roll a bit in my hand and close the face.

What's your chipping method? If you have a good technique driving mainly by the torso, there can be a tendency to extend the wrist at impact and roll them over a little. Coupled with a slightly open torso, this can cause pulls. You have to ensure that on the downswing you let your torso do the rotating, don't help with your wrists. That's been a problem for me before.

Thanks for the tips. Too much wrist movement could be to blame, i will pay close attention to that.

I have plenty of issue chipping but line is not one of them since I started doing this...

I keep my trial elbow close to my body on the backswing and I create space between my lead elbow and my body on the follow through. Everything close back. Create space through. Chase the still open face down the line.

Chip shots, not pitches.

I would pull chips left because the heel would dig and help rotate the face shut (poor wrist angles at impact likely contributed to my left misses as well). This would cause other kinds of misses too, like shanks. My teacher fixed this problem by having me stand closer to the ball at address, gripping down, and making sure the heel and toe were equally on the ground at address (I would have the toe too high in the air, previously). I try to feel as if I'm swinging straight back-straight through because I would bring my hands too inward for the chip. Inward hands on a chip shot makes the arc too narrow and the point of tangency too sharp.

The basic chipping motion still requires you to have some forward shaft lean at impact. The more you bow the wrist, the lower the ball will come out and the more it will run out.

Check your divots. If they are super small and look like the heel could have made them, then this post may help you. Raise the handle and get the toe and heel of the club to rest evenly on the ground when you address the ball. Mike and Andy explain the set-up and swing requirements of the basic motion quite well on their short game DVD too btw.

And the more you bow, the more you expose the leading edge. That's fine if you understand that. If not, you may find yourself hitting some fatted ones.

The set-up is probably 80% of the chip shot. Then I basically just use a putting stroke.

I'll cock my wrists going back and use more body pivot/rotation when changing to the basic pitch (and open the face to some varying degree to expose some bounce and get some more loft from the club so I can hit it higher). Most of the power I generate with the basic pitch comes from me varying the speed of my pivot/lower body rotation. Lots of good teachers prescribe this method.

    • Managed 51/41 this weekend.  Justin Thomas went 78 / 62 from round 1 to round 2. He has access to the best coaches, best technology, best gear, and plays probably every day (or close to it)... if he can have a 16 shot swing from one round to the next, who are we to expect consistency when going out 2x a week is an accomplishment (at least for me with 2 kids it is!).
