Hi everyone, I'm new to the site. I'm 17 years old and a senior in high school. I have a problem. I measured my swing speed today (i work at a golf course) and I got an average of 80-85 mph. A couple times I did get to the 90s, once i got to 97 mph. This was all with a 7 iron. Is this good for my age? I'm 5'7" 135lbs. It's not like I'm weak, i work out regularly. I use hybrid irons with a regular graphite shaft like adams golf's irons but these are cheap paragon knock offs. A person I work with is giving me his old Titleist DCI 990s with Dynamic Gold S300 shafts. There are 2 things I would like to know. 1) How can I increase my swingspeed a lot and quickly. 2) Will I be able to play these new irons with the stiff shaft? If not what swingspeed should you use stiff and how fast can I get it. Or should I just scratch it and re-shaft them completely. All help appreciated.

Thanks

-Adam

Your hanidcap is a 15, so you have plenty of room to work on contact.

Also don't try to kill the ball, it produces more spin than anything, always stay in balance. I have hit more iron shots over greens trying to swing slower than i do trying to swing hard, because i end up making a better swing and flushing it.

Its hard to say, i don't know what my 7-iron swing speed is. Do you have a driver swing speed? If you have an 85 mph swing speed, then i would guess that they might be a bit strong for you, but you could grow into them. Being 17, you might have a few inches left and definetly can do to gain some weight.

Welcome to the site!

Most of the time when we talk about swing speed we are referencing swinging with a driver.  Tour average for a 7 iron is around 90 mph, so I would say you're doing pretty good!

This link may help as well to decide what shaft to use.  Stiff would probably be fine for now.

Work on contact and consistency.  Your ball speed will improve as a byproduct.  It's really easy to get caught up in the swing speed mentality, try to swing hard, and then get really frustrated.  I've hit balls 300 yards with a driver SS of 108 and I've hit balls 240 with a driver SS of 129.  I can say the former is much more rewarding.  Works better on early morning rounds too.
