Get over your mental issue. Set the face slightly right-pointing, and go with it. It should feel good to you because the chances of the ball hooking from there are reduced.

Show some pictures of your grip, but if you're setting the face square or so at address, and returning it roughly there, then your grip is probably fine.

Your path may need to be a bit LESS outward, but I'm reluctant to go there quite yet…

FWIW, I tried to trace it as well as I could. Shaft and club head were pretty blurry though.

Yours in earnest, Jason.

Okay. So yeah, clubface a little more right-pointing.

I have definitely evolved. In years past if I were to step up to a ball and just take a natural feeling, unmanipulated swing, you could bet your life it had slice spin on it. Guaranteed. Now if I just walk up and whack a ball with no thought, it will almost always have draw spin on it. That's a HUGE transformation.

Just posting this to make me feel good and to remind myself of how far I've come.

June 4, 2013

Mid-November 2014

These are two very different motions. Sometimes I can get caught up in scores and start to feel like I'm not getting anywhere. This is a little reminder to myself that I am progressing and evolving. The scorecard is the LAST place that improvement manifests itself.

I think I'm getting really close to a major breakthrough, hopefully it will happen this winter if I can keep up a somewhat reasonable amount of good practice sessions. Fingers crossed.

True, oh so true!

The trick is to keep reminding yourself (& myself) of that. If we can get as encouraged about making a new, better swing as we are about shooting lower scores, then we are heading in the right direction.

Technically I guess this would be OTT.

But does that even matter if the DS is on an acceptable path coming through the ball?

Am I correct in interpreting this to mean that I'm underplane on the BS but then tip out and get onto a better plane into impact? Not that I have any intentions of ****ing with my BS, or changing anything that I'm working on really. Just curious about the "why" my clubhead goes so far inside on he backswing. Is it just because I hinge my wrists late or is it a swing fault that I'll eventually have to address? I feel like it's a non-factor as it doesn't seem to negatively affect my DS, but maybe that's because my standards are still pretty low?

I don't think so. I always thought that OTT meant you were swinging left. Just because you happen to have a really inside takeaway doesn't make your ds OTT. It's not relative to the backswing. (At least in my understanding) In the past, if I've been unhappy with my path, one thing I've tried to correct it was to exaggerate the opposite on the backswing. For example, if I had your swing AND for some reason was unhappy with the path I'd try a really outside takeaway (a la Rickie Fowler) to try and feel a more inside downswing. Any who's, if your arrows are accurate then I don't really see a need for a change. Seems like a pretty good path. What's the ball doing?

No, I'm happy with my path, just messing around with tracing my path. I've always known that my takeaway was an "innie", just really leaps out at me when I traced the whole thing. I don't think it's an issue, at least, it sure isn't a priority and likely never will be at the rate I conquer the keys. :-P Just makin' coversation and all...

Misses are hooks and pushes, which makes sense. Gonna start working on face control. If I hit a good start line I get nice push draws. Time to start working on start lines...

Then, like Golfing Dad said, I don't think you can call this coming OTT, as I believe that only relates to your target line. If you had the same backswing, and started to hit pulls, pull hooks and pull slices, that would be OTT.

P.S. No subliminal instruction intended. "Don't screw up Ernie's swing thoughts, Chris!" :-P

Nope. It's not. I think Drew covered it above.

@iacas

Would practicing start lines with half swings (say 9 to 3 swings) be an effective way to work on start lines or should I be working with full swings (given my Erie priority piece and tendency not to follow through completely)? I'm thinking it would be nice to practice in the basement as that would triple my available practice time. Maybe little pump drills with the objective of starting the ball to the right of an alignment stick? At the same time I'm a little wary of practicing with a limited followthrough, although I know what to look out for when practicing like that.

A mix of both can't hurt. 1/2, 3/4, and full swings (at different speeds too remember).

Been putting in a lot of reps in the basement. 9 to 3 swings with an open club face to get the ball to start right of my target. Feels good and when I hit it well, not only do I get a higher trajectory (from the open face) but I get a softer feeling impact too, I'm guessing that I have a shallower attack when working on this which would be a nice bonus if it carries over to real swings, I can have a tendency to be too steep. It'll have to pass the test of full swings next time I can get to the range but it feels good on the partial swings.

Alrighty, spent an hour at the range today hitting balls with a very open clubface, and I mean very open. Looked to be 20+ degrees open :bugout: . Didn't hit a single hook (obviously lol). Hit lots of pushes but mostly push draws. Just gotta keep working on finding a happy middle ground. Hit some absolute crap too, fats and thins but that usually happens when I play around with my swing. Very encouraging session though, the good strikes were as pure as can be and just kept rising and rising and the impact was absolutely heaven, softer than a baby's ass.

Hit about 10-15 balls with the driver just focusing on making a full turn through the ball with no steering and no fear, results were so-so, lots of fades but distance was deep and when I got it to draw it looked real nice. Funny how I put hook spin on all my irons but fade 90% of my drives.

    • Best drive I've ever hit: I will not be answering any questions about the rest of the hole. Or the round, for that matter.
    • I tried hybrids way back when TaylorMade introduced the copper orange Firesole Rescue, the clubhead having been made of titanium which was still relatively new even in drivers back then. I couldn't hit it well at all, and while the success of hybrids suggests that the modern ones must be quite good,  I'm perfectly happy with the 5, 7, and 9-woods.  Early ones of mine were Top Flite Intimidator 400s made by Spalding... and also made of titanium, now that I think of it.  I still have them in my basement. I do bag a driving iron, but it's a one-trick-pony that never sees fairway use.
    • The last time I played Maxfli balls, Dunlop was still making them. How long ago was that? Mostly, though, I used to play Top Flites (original 336 dimple model) when Spalding was still making them. Now I play the Pro V1x. Last time that I ordered some, Titleist was still making them. Let's see how long that lasts.
    • Once, on a course in Middleton, Massachusetts that I used to love but has since closed down,  I hit the wrong half of a huge, UK style double green.  Then I made the hundred foot putt.  Tough to  forget that one.
