Erik and I will be at the PGA Show all next week.  For those that might not know what this is, it's the biggest week of golf business with 1,100+ interactive exhibits by leading golf companies and brands.  Great chance to check out what new products, not only the major manufactories but also what the more modest sized companies, have in store for 2012.  The Show  held at the Orange County Convention Center in Orlando Florida.  With more than 41,000 business participants it is also a very important event for networking opportunities.  Attendees at the show can take part in topical seminar sessions that are organized during the event.  To get an idea of how much the event has grown since 1954 check THIS out.

If you can't make it, don't worry, Bridgestone Golf will be hosting live coverage from the PGA for 2 days  12pm -1pm. We will be able to broadcast the coverage on the site.  On Jan 26-27 from 12-1pm go HERE

This is my first time attending and I've only heard great things about it, especially how big it is.  I'm personally looking forward to the Demo Day on Wednesday.  My buddy at Graphite Design says you can spend the whole day walking from one end of the range to the other.  Sounds good to me!  I'm excited to check out some of Callaway's newest line of woods because of their FIT system and obviously since I'm a PING fanboy (as Erik calls me) the i20 line.

We're looking to provide TST community with pics, and probably video interviews with the equipment specialists from a variety of manufactures and apparel companies.

More importantly, I want to ask you guys, What products or companies are you excited to hear about?

Let us know by posting in this thread and we'll get you the scoop.

What a golf fest! I am green with envy. Have a great time while you are there. I really hope to make it over to Orlando next year.

I am interested in anything that will help my students improve faster! ;-)

I'll be there!

Honestly, there's no 'one' thing I am specifically interested in. Being a lefty, I tend to miss out on the cool new clubs, so I tend to geek over golf gadgets.

I'll look for you guys. You'll be at the Bridgestone display?

A company I do a lot of work for is exhibiting there.  Nothing significant, just golf accessories and bags for women.  Kind of anxious to see their results from the show.

Is this show open to the public or only to those in the industry?  Thought just those in industry but have heard a few comments suggesting the public can go.

Always changing:

Driver: Cobra S2/Nike VR Pro 10.5º

Irons: Callaway X-20 Tour 4-9i

Hybrid: Titleist 910H 19º & 21º

Wood: TaylorMade R11 3w

Putter: Odyssey White Hot

Wedges: Titleist Vokeys - 48º, 54º, 62º

First round: February 2011

Well here's a stupid question (since I probably know the answer), but will thesandtrap.com be represented there in some fashion?

No. It's a merchandise show. Mike and I will be there to walk around and make some videos and take some pictures of merchandise, but that's about it.

Oh, can you try and get some trackman or flightscope data on the performance differences between the 2011 PentaTP and the 2012 Penta TP5 and TP3 balls?  In particular I would like to see some ball speed and spin data.  I would think they would have that type of data available??

    • In terms of ball striking, not really. Ball striking being how good you are at hitting the center of the clubface with the swing path you want and the loft you want to present at impact.  In terms of getting better launch conditions for the current swing you have, it is debatable.  It depends on how you swing and what your current launch conditions are at. These are fine tuning mechanisms not significant changes. They might not even be the correct fine tuning you need. I would go spend the $100 to $150 dollars in getting a club fitting over potentially wasting money on changes that ChatGPT gave you.  New grips are important. Yes, it can affect swing weight, but it is personal preference. Swing weight is just one component.  Overall weight effects the feel. The type of golf shaft effects the feel of the club in the swing. Swing weight effects the feel. You can add so much extra weight to get the swing weight correct and it will feel completely different because the total weight went up. Imagine swinging a 5lb stick versus a 15lb stick. They could be balanced the same (swing weight), but one will take substantially more effort to move.  I would almost say swing weight is an old school way of fitting clubs. Now, with launch monitors, you could just fit the golfer. You could have two golfers with the same swing speed that want completely different swing weight. It is just personal preference. You can only tell that by swinging a golf club.
    • Thanks for the comments. I fully understand that these changes won't make any big difference compared to getting a flawless swing but looking to give myself the best chance of success at where I am and hopefully lessons will improve the swing along the way. Can these changes make minor improvements to ball striking and misses then that's fine. From what I understood about changing the grips, which is to avoid them slipping in warm and humid conditions, is that it will affect the swing weight since midsize are heavier than regular and so therefore adding weight to the club head would be required to avoid a change of feel in the club compared to before?
    • I think part of it is there hasn't been enough conclusive studies specific to golf regarding block studies. Maybe the full swing, you can't study it because it is too complicated and to some degree it will fall into variable or random.
    • Going one step stiffer in the golf shaft, of the same make and model will have minor impact on the launch conditions. It can matter, it is a way to dial in some launch conditions if you are a few hundred RPM off or the angle isn't there. Same with moving weights around. A clubhead weights 200-220 grams. You are shifting a fraction of that to move the CG slightly. It can matter, again its more about fine tuning. As for grip size, this is more personal preference. Grip size doesn't have any impact on the swing out of personal preference.  You are going to spend hundreds of dollars for fine tuning. Which if you want, go for it. I am not sure what your level of play is, or what your goals in golf are.  In the end, the golf swing matters more than the equipment. If you want to go to that level of detail, go find a good golf club fitter. ChatGPT is going to surface scan reddit, golfwrx, and other popular websites for the answers. Basically, it is all opinionated gibberish at this point.
