Flipping has been discussed a lot but I haven't seen much input as to whether the right elbow position can cause or enable the last second "flip" or not. My experience is that if the elbow stays "ahead" of the right wrist, it gives the player a feeling that promotes the flat left wrist and the retention of the flying wedge. Comments?

The other day my swing plane for some reason got really flat and that meant the club and my right elbow got too far behind me.  Since my right elbow was behind me it had no room to come straight down to the ball and i was standing up through the shot and flipping.

Not sure why i started to do it, but i would say from my experience that it is indeed possible.

I think it's virtually impossible for the right elbow to stay "ahead" of the right wrist. Can you elaborate, Pete? You don't have to flip if you have a punch elbow. Look at some Jim Furyk swings, for example.

I should have said "the feeling that the right elbow is ahead" ....I will try to find some video...if the right elbow is pointing

"behind the ball" and not at the "right hip area" it could help in the pre-release...just a discussion

I just wanted to add that getting the trail elbow far enough forward, whether it be punch or pitch elbow is a combo of getting the weight forward, sequencing of the left shoulder and arms and rotation.  If that lead shoulder rises too early, the arms can't lower, stay back and you have to lengthen out the radius by uncocking the wrists in order to make contact.  Good one by Dana

I've noticed that "running out of right arm" can cause flipping, as Mike said, this can be weight transfert, pivot, shoulders etc..

To me running out of right arm happens at P5 to P6 because the right arm has actively started straightening. Either because the golfer has to start squaring the face or because the right shoulder is too high.

This is a good discussion but I feel it is incomplete without discussing the role of the right shoulder. Pitch elbow which I think is being discussed here requires the right shoulder to go into internal rotation (ala Dustin Johnson). I feel that needs to be accompanied by some form of closing of the face which can be accomplished through educated hands.

    • Day 49 - 2024-11-18 Light day of HackMotion work in the basement with my putting. Suffice to say my feels very closely align with what is measured.
    • Day 200 (18 Nov 24) - Broke out the MacGregor blades to do some “vintage” club pitches and chips.  Focus was on alignment and where I am looking in relation to the ball…have been working on finding a focal point about 3-6 inches ahead of the ball (toward the target) and not staring at the ball.  Getting very predictable strikes.  Overall it was a fun drill session and will serve as a warmup to tomorrow’s planned front 9 walk with these irons and persimmon woods and of course a “new” putter - a Acushnet Bullseye…

    • I believe that losing a tour card is too extreme but definitely agree that more needs to be done to prevent slow play.
    • Its way past time both tours  have  major  penalties for  slow  play. I  hate  it when they say" This group is  on the  clock". Big damn deal. Issue  penalties. Maybe Hull is a  bit too harsh but  its time a slew  of  2 stroke  penalties start  being  issued.     Charley Hull is fed up with slow play on the LPGA, so she offered a ‘ruthless’ solution “I’m quite ruthless, but I said, ‘Listen, if you get three bad timings, every time it’s a tee shot penalty; if you have three of them, you lose your Tour card instantly.’ I’m sure that would hurry a lot of people up, and they won’t want to lose their Tour card. That would kill the slow play, but they would never do that.” Who knows if that will work. But if it does not, maybe the PGA Tour should adopt Hull’s idea. The LPGA should, too, or at least assess penalty strokes for slow play. Five-hour rounds for a final group on Sunday is unacceptable and a quick way to lose interest and engagement from fans.
