Since I started this thread, put 2 rounds on the new CLeveland FL 17° with the factory Mayazaki shaft.    Gotta say, couldn't be more impressed.    Haven't mis hit it yet off the deck - hit several massive (for me) fairway shots and can't believe the height I'm getting compared to the other 3 woods I've owned.    Only thing is it is much shorter than a typical 15° 3 wood off the tee - didn't expect the 2° difference would equate to 25 yards shorter, but I can live with that considering how much better I hit it off the deck, which is what I really need.

I have a G10 17 degree. I like them so much I often think I may never have to buy another fairway wood.

I use a 2009 Cleveland Launcher 17* 3HT (actually a 4 wood) off the tee and a 19* RBZ #5 wood off the fairway and tee. The Launcher has a larger than normal head and a bit of weight which suits my SS of around 90mph just fine.

Pick the 4 wood head depending on your preferences and the type of shots you intend to use the club for.  Wide or narrow sole, small or big head etc.

For me, am still searching for a decent 4W, but have a problem finding them in India, and the new ones that people can source are working out very heavy in the greenback stakes.  Therefore looking at the 3W / 5W as an alternative if I can get it to work well.  Keep only one wood in the bag and use the additional space for a 50* wedge is the plan

What's in the bag

  • Taylor Made r5 dual Draw 9.5* (stiff)
  • Cobra Baffler 4H (stiff)
  • Taylor Made RAC OS 6-9,P,S (regular)
  • Golden Bear LD5.0 60* (regular)
  • Aidia Z-009 Putter
  • Inesis Soft 500 golf ball

I have a 16.5° Tour Edge XRail 4W (and a 21° 7W), with 60 gr. R-flex  Graphite Design G-series shaft. I played a Callaway X.Tour 3W for about three years, but had trouble getting the ball up.

My 4W is a reliable club - doesn't go as far as a top notch 3W shot, - but it usually lands in bounds after the shot. This season I sometimes wish the shaft was a bit heavier - it's only 60 grams - but otherwise I like it.

@onthehunt526, if you're only going to carry one FW and no hybrids, the 4W gives you more versatility than a 3W.

I have a Cobr Amp Cell 3-4 wood, set to 4. It goes about 220 yards and rolls about 8 - 10 yards. Straight as an arrow.

New ones are around $50 on Ebay.

Or one FW and one hybrid in my case, Hell, @WUTiger It may end up being three hybrids.

I ran into Don, the golf pro I've mentioned before. He was the one who switched from 3W to 5W as his only fairway wood.

Well, Don tweaked things again, and now has a 4W length shaft in the 5W head. He said it gives him just a little extra distance. Plus, he can choke down if he needs to shorten the distance.

Latest update ... I've brought the 4 wood back into the bag a couple times when struggling with the 3 wood ... it just isn't THAT much easier for me to hit & isn't any more reliable, so I always go back to the 3 wood.   A couple range sessions & I'm back on with the 3 wood ... for me, that is the ONE club that demands practice to be comfortable with it.

Are you ready for this?  I use TWO 4 woods in my bag (sometimes).  I have a Cobra AMP 4 wood -- 16.5 degrees and 43", and a Taylormade 200 series 4 wood -- 17 degrees and 42.5".  The Cobra  carries about as long as most three woods but usually sticks when it lands.  The Taylormade is somewhat of a shallow-faced club and launches higher than the loft would have you believe.  The distance is limited so I use it in place of a 3-hybrid and hit towering bombs with good precision.  For some reason I can find the center of the face on this club more easily than a typical hybrid.  The stock stiff shaft is a bit flexible but hey, it just works.
