Man arrested trying to steal sand at Augusta

Masters patrons often cannot leave the grounds of Augusta National without a souvenir. For a 40-year-old Ohio man, his attempt to snag a souvenir landed him in jail.

Clayton Baker of Ohio was arrested by Richmond County sheriff's duputies on Sunday when he tried to go inside the ropes to take sand from a bunker on the course.

Once identified, Baker tried to outrun Augusta National security and sheriff's deputies. He was caught shortly thereafter and charged with disorderly conduct, according to the Augusta Chronicle.

A spokesman for the sheriff's department said Baker had been drinking and intended to put the sand in a Masters souvenir cup.

I can see the appeal the idea might have had in his mind. Definitely.

Some folks save 'Holy Water' from Lourdes or Rome in a small bottle on the mantle and kiss the bottle each day.  Sand from Augusta-sure  why not?

He was thinking he'd have a fantastic souvenir and great conversation piece.

Totally understand.

In the race of life, always back self-interest. At least you know it's trying.

I guess the trying to run away part was the dumbest. I can see trying to get the sand but just be square do the all American thing and plead stupidity, "I didn't know I couldn't do that"

What a moron....this guy will definitely lose badge privileges at Augusta - and if the badges were a gift, the person who's registered to the badges may lose their privilege as well.

The guy was an idiot. Here is how I would have done it. Walk into the bunker. Dig my feet in like i was pretenting a practice swing. Take my foot out of my shoes & push some sand into my shoes and put the shoes back on my feet without ever bending down. Then I would walk out of the bunker with big heavy shoes full of sand. Sand getting in your shoes when you are in a bunker is just part of the game. I would have a true legal defense. LOL

yea...no kidding!!  That was the first thing that came to my mind when reading this thread.  I feel bad for the badge-holder who allowed this idiot to use their badge.

Stealing sand is something you might want to plan more for as you have to actually go inside the ropes.  That might be tough to get away with as I'm sure people are watching the course like hawks. But you never know.  Just wait until after the last group rolls by and just causally make your way in with the crowd, it might be possible.  I'd probably try to take a divot or something since you aren't allow to take cameras in. I'd have to have something besides a tshirt.

All that being said, can't blame the guy for trying.

    • Day 47, June 22.  After work today, I spent 20 minutes in my indoor practice room, hitting about as many balls.  Slow, as slow as I could, 6-iron swings, same priority piece as the past month.
    • Day 291 6-22 full, faster swings, focusing on low point, missing towel. Recorded some face on and dtl. Practicing full speed changes is something I wasn't doing enough.
    • Day 2 (22 Jun 26) - used the clip the tee drill today - focused on picking the tee and then collecting the divot.  Hit a few hard foam balls later in the session.
    • Club of the week, my hybrid. Stripe show on every shot. This one was probably the best. About 240 to the green. The ball was on a severe upslope. I hit it just off the back of the green (like 1-ft.
    • That will sting for a long time. Had all the momentum in the world.  The on course heckling of WC a bit over the top. IMO, that may have even galvanized him. Kinda like RC. He may have picked up some sympathy too. So boo to the boos. I can't stand him (and it's not just the incidences) but I think when punishment outsizes the crime, the tide tend to turn. He has stuck to "I've earned the hatred" narrative. Smart kid.
