i tee my ball up from the fairway and on the green too...

OK, so it seems that there is a myriad of options. This is what I do too. In fact, I don't even use a tee I just use the head of a tee that someone broke off prior to me. Sometimes it can be as short as 1 cm and I stick half of that in the ground.

Like everybody here has said, I use a tee. I used to think it was the sign of a poor stroke until I saw a video where Arnie said he always did it.

As to specifics, I use a broken tee for iron shots, scavenged from the tee box if possible, or if I have to, break off a good one. A shorter tee allows plenty of ball height (1/4" - any higher and I hit shots off the top of the clubface which obviously reduces distance, just like shots from grass tufts where the ball is sitting up). Also - and maybe this is more psychological then real - there is little resistance when the club strikes the tee - less than you might get from a regular length tee stuck more deeply into the ground, especially since the ball height for an iron is so much less than for a driver and a regular tee would mean more wood in the ground. I think of it as similar in concept to the "frictionless" tees.

That's the same reason I use a broken tee as well. So you hit down on the ball as if it was on the ground also. Seems some people scoop it (1/2"-1" high, really??), some people hit down on it. I guess I was just wondering if there was a set rule on how to tee up the ball for an iron shot.

You realize that pushing a regular size tee in the ground farther would give you the same height as a broken one, right?

Oh, But it's so much harder to push down! I solve this problem by never teeing up any of my clubs except my 2 hybrid, and Driver.

I dunno if it's a mental thing, if my tees are too strong, or if my swing is too weak, or what, but sometimes when I stick a full tee into hard ground (which we have a lot of here in SoCal) as I come down on the ball, my club catches the tee and has nowhere to go except left or right, and the ball goes accordingly.

Most of the time, it just breaks the head off the tee and it's not a big deal. But for this reason, I just use a broken tee in the first place. If I have to use a full tee in hard ground, I will stick it all the way down, then pull it up a little bit, that way when I come down on the ball the tee has the ability to get out of the way if need be.

You could be right, as far as I can tell, I haven't grown at all ....

I even do this on my drives.

If 9i or less I dont tee it up, obviously everything else I tee up. I don't like the fact of hitting a pw off a tee especially into the wind on some par 3's. After all Perth is like the 2nd most windiest city in the world or something

    • Nothing exposes low point control, and for that matter the general quality of ball striking like tight lies. Lol! I am at a crossroad. My days of playing with a super strong left hand grip are coming to an end it seems. I'm finding it increasingly difficult to maintain proper face control through impact as the club face naturally wants to turn over. The quality of strike and ball flight difference when I weaken the grip is stark. Problem is a weaker grip is at odds with my poor sore left forearm which I have been nursing for last few days after 3 days of demanding golf. As of now I will continue my 'transition' to a weaker grip with woods and hopefully my forearm will condition as I go along. Maybe someday I'll get to a normal address with irons too.
