Who is better right now (April 2012): Phil or Tiger?

Kind of amazing how razor thin the margin is between being the consensus best player in the world, and being a bum. We're talking about a Hall of Famer, the no-worse-than-second greatest of all time, and a young phenom, all at or near their primes, and this game has given each of them a turn in the barrel this year. But it sure seems like Tiger has the momentum now. Even Chamblee has jumped on his bandwagon.

Chamblee is on every bandwagon every week though.

I don't know if I'm ready to call Tiger back after two good rounds in a row, but I'm certainly not going to be comparing Phil favorably to him anytime soon.

I say we wait until after the US Open to make any definitive conclusions.

Aw who am I kidding, this is the internet.  Let's make one a day!

At the time of this post Phil just went 7+ on the back nine and WD from the tourney and Tiger is leading so I'll say Tiger :) Next week it may be different

Back from what ? He's a top ten player in the world, and that includes an inflated minimum divisor and lots of results from 2010-2011. He won a pretty big event pretty recently by the largest margin in the last several years.

This thread fails to address the definition of the word "now." The last tee shot? Today? This month? This year?

Back from sucking ass for the last three years. Back to number 1 in the world. Back to what everyone expects him to be. Back to being the greatest player of all time. Obviously. And let's go with who's better today. Tiger had 4 bogeys. Phil had none. Phil wins.

What was his lowest world ranking? What would it have been if you had not applied the minimum divisor? You have a strange definition of "sucking ass."

Prove it. You know for a fact he didn't play golf today? :)

This is the point in the cross examination when you see the lawyer walk over to his table and pick up a piece of paper.  It doesn't really matter what's on it.  It could be your prior written statement; it could be a grocery list.  He turns his body towards the jury so that they can see a hint of confusion on his face as he looks at it.

He's not really looking at the piece of paper.  He's trying not to do backflips.

Because pretty soon, he's going to make you answer a really tough question.  He's going to ask you to explain how, if Phil is so mentally exhausted that he can't play golf, he could have possibly made any bogeys today.

You clearly missed the smiley face. Or chose to ignore it.

Because a round of golf with his friends is an entirely different event than a round of golf on the PGA Tour.

If this thread is going to continue to be this dumb, then there's no point in continuing it.

    • Is it? I bought the Stack radar to replace my PRGR based on what Stack told me! When I am swinging for speed, the PRGR would miss 50%-80% of my backswings due to a higher speed. The stack seldom misses those- at least for me.
    • As an analyst by nature, I would like to compare the scores under both systems. It is something we can easily do if we have the data. I actually thought the new system was less fair to those whose game was on the decline - like mine! Old: Best 10 of last 20 scores with the .96 multiplier. Course handicap excluded course rating and overall par. New: Best 8/20. Course handicap includes course rating -par. My understanding is Stableford caps scores at Net double bogey like stroke play. If so, handicap should be slower to rise because you are only using 8 versus 10 scores. If I am missing something, I am curious enough to  want to understand what that may be. My home course tees that I play are 72.1/154 now. My best score out here is 82. When my game started to decline, my handicap didn’t budge for 13 rounds because of good scores in my first 8! I know I am an anomaly but my handicap has increased almost 80% in the past few years (with only a few rounds this year). For a few months I knew I was losing every bet because my game was nowhere near my handicap. I suspect I have steamrolled a few nuances but that shouldn’t matter much. When I have modeled this with someone playing the same tees and course, one good round, or return to form, will immediately reduce the handicap by some amount.
