Sounds like you're trying hard but don't quite know what to do. Find a teaching pro you have confidence in and go with him or her.

Swing advice from three people -  fellow amateurs? -  has you going in three directions at once. Even if one of them is a fairly good golfer, that's no guarantee the person can systematically teach another how to play.

If your schedule permits, take a spring golf clinic. You would meet with a group of other beginners a couple of times a week and learn the basics together. If you really click with one of the clinic instructors, go to him or her for individual lessons.

Bubba Watson may be able to succeed as self-taught, but guys like you - and me - do better with lessons.

And.. . if you find a good pro, use him or her as your source on swing. Stay away from magazine and online swing tips for a couple of years, because stray tips may push you into moves that conflict with what your pro is building in you.

Okay on a budget, well if the three swings are legit, pick one and don't look back (I did Hogan) until you get the fundamentals down. Trying to mix and match will be too frustrating in the beginning. Second, see the ball get hit. Simple advice but you will not make good contact if you aren't looking at it. Let some one else watch your ball flight, you still see it anyway.

Hit half shots and focus on making solid contact.  Good impact position, center face, solid contact.  Always takes the blues away for me.  Usually how I start any practice session.  Make good contact for 15 balls or so then I work on things from there.  If I'm struggling I go back to that for a few balls.

^^ That.

When I practice, I start usually with a 9i & hit it until I'm hitting it consistently well. Only then do I move up to say the 6i then 4i then 3w then Driver. If at any point I 'lose' my swing I go back to the 9i.

There have been many times I never get past the 9i & I just hit a whole bucket of them. And if I can't even hit a 9i well, I'll hit half shots.

In other words, don't force something to work. If it's not there it's not there.

well.... one swing is from my buddy who can shoot par but is not the greatest teacher. 2nd one is from a guy i met at the range who is a former golf coach at a conference team. it helped me a little bit but still had me confused. last one is the one i pretty much put together from reading articles and what not. i think its time to dish out $15 and get lessons from a club pro to put all doubt away. ive asked around about him and everyones saying that he defiantley helped them. the course is also one of the best in ohio.

^ that again.....and remember to work on good fundamentals....grip, alignment, posture...and finally, just relax and swing the club

    • Day 36: back to some mirror work tonight. Need a bit more forearm roll in my feels to help with the shallowing.
    • _sigh_ so close to red text.  Went away for three days, but didn't do a practice morning-of-departure (Friday) nor evening-of-return (Sunday), so I had three misses, back to day one. Day 1, May 4 2026.  At home today, spent nearly an hour in my practice room, hitting about three dozen practice balls, primarily with my 6-iron.
    • Day 254 5-4 Arms off chest in backswing and downswing. Short swing, pause and then hit.  Hit foam balls. Keeping arching of wrist a focus as well.
    • I would think of it in terms of time. The time it takes to get the arm angle into a good position to deliver the club with proper shaft lean. Another component is rotation, but that is also a matter of timing. It relates to how the body stalls to give the golfer time to hit the ball. If you have to get 80+ degrees out of that right elbow in one third of a second versus 50 degrees in the same time then you have to steal time from somewhere. It is usually body rotation. That does not help with shaft lean.  I agree in that amateurs tend to make the swing more complicated than pro golfers.
    • I haven't been able to practice like I wanted and won't for the next week.  1. The weather sucks in Ohio this year. I have been mostly inside hitting foam balls. Just kind of my basic stuff.  2. I woke up last Saturday with a left side rib muscle on fire. If I turned or leaned a certain way it would spasm that almost buckled my knees. I have been taking a break to let that settle. I don't want to get a long term injury. I think I pinched a nerve or just aggravated a muscles.   3. I am going on a mini-vacation to Florida (screw you Ohio weather) with a friend, and rolling that into a work conference I have next week. I will be with out my clubs for a week.  I will be back next in two Fridays to hit the ground running with some warmer temps and better weather in Ohio, hopefully. I would really like to get more out on the course and the range.
