Gotta be:

"I hit it 300 yards consistently".

A guy in a foursome ahead of me the other day told me that about his new square head Callaway (FTi?) so I paid attention to where he was hitting his second shots from and they weren't more than 20-30 yards farther than I was getting with my 3-wood and I'm not a long hitter.

What others?

Then one I always tell (after a bad round) is "well, I actually hit the ball pretty well, just didn't score well..."

Ahhhh no, usually bad scoring for me goes hand and hand with poor ball striking.

gotta be driving distance

30 handicaps dont hit it 300 yards im sorry (especially consistantly)

And ive played with maybe 4-5 people in my life who could consistantly put it out thre 300 (meaning they flew it probably 280-290) and ive played with A LOT of people in tournaments and in highschool.

Driving distance or score. Lots of people don't seem to know distances to well so they are lying but they really don't know it. When i tell people that i can hit my 3 iron about 240 they don't believe until i out drive them with it.

You and your buddy finish up a hole, and he's hacked it to death.

You: "So, what'd you take on that?"

Buddy: "Bogey."

Not only do I agree about score, but especially in a 4 man scramble. Me and 3 other single digit handicappers got beat in a 4 man scramble. It was raining, cold and a 30 mph wind. We shot a very impressive 66 (for the conditions) A group of 4 thirty-something handicappers said they shot a 57 (without their handicap included). Funny, we saw them take 3 doubles and about 6-8 bogeys as they were playing in front of us.

You learn alot about a man playing golf with him!!

Yer with distance most people think they hit the ball further than they do because at the range they see 9 irons running 150 and then on the course they might only hit it 120 because they are not gettin any run.

Driving distance: Either because people truly don't know, or because their egos won't allow otherwise. Countless times, I hear people saying they drive the ball "300 yards". One of my father's friends even claims he hit 315 back in the 80's, with a persimmon wood and a balata ball. (By comparison, the average pro drove 250-255). Fact of the matter is, the average duffer drives about 200, 220 on a good day, less in bad conditions or if and when they mishit. I learned this painful lesson when I would be on a 400 yard par 4, and my drive barely makes it to the blue peg out in the fairway. (Nowadays, I can crush it 280 on a good day, but my average is more like 240-250, if I mishit, 200.)

Score: Hitting three balls in the water and only taking one penalty stroke? Hacking up the hole and somehow getting double bogey? Yeah, right. The average joe probably says he shoots a 95, but it's more like a 110.

Another is iron distance. Just because a hacker has hit a 6 iron 200 before he thinks he can do that every time. And when he pulls his club and hits it and comes up 25 yards short he can't figure out why.

My favorite is "Hit the ball well, just didn't score"......and why do you never hear anyone say "Hit the ball horrible, just dang did I score well????"

Lamebum here, I can crush it 300 (sometimes even in the fairway) and I can hit it 180 (sometimes not in the fairway) with a driver.........probably is, the only time I hit it 300 is when the fairway ends at 280 and there is a creek in the middle....

Why don't I just start bowling!

I had that happen in league last night. Hit the ball terrible!!! But played just one over my handicap... Got up and down from a ditch, was able to pitch out of pond (to about 4 ft), had a ball go OB, hit a tree and bounce back in. And a lot of other bad shots in between. All to shoot a 42. Should have been about a 52!

The most common lie I hear is distance. I hear people say they drive the ball 300 yards on the 1st tee box. Then I hit a 5 wood past them on the first tee. I guess I must be hitting that 5w about 320 hugh??

I would think the score... I think so many people want to have a low handicap, just to say "Well...I carry an 8 handicap", but if they played in a golf tournament following all the USGA rules they would be more like a 15.

I don't know if it's most often, but it's one of the most ridiculous lies.... The guy who says he plays to an 88 average when you are working out a wager on the first tee, but to boost his ego, he brags in the clubhouse about how he consistently breaks 80.

And it's pretty obvious that neither story is accurate...
