I need advice on wedge purchase

My set currently has an AW and a PW. I want to buy a SW and maybe a LW. I've heard that forged wedges are a little harder to hit. Would I be better off buying the wedges that match my set(Callaway BB) or trying a forged wedge like the X-tour wedges by Callaway?

I love Cleveland wedges. The Reg. 588 series is VERY good for the price. My dad bought a 56 degree sand wedge in gunmetal about 3 weeks ago, and his short game has been so good. (he shot 76 the other day, A LOT of up and down pars)...

I also have a Reg. 588 60 degree lob wedge, and I love it. Clearly my favorite club in my bag.

You can't go wrong with Cleveland Wedges, IMO.

i dunno what ur game is like, but the callaway x-tour is a really really really good wedge. I am on the verge of buying myself some again ( i used to have a 60 xtour that wore out after a while). The spin milled are also great, buy after having owned both of them, i really like the xtours, they spin so much man.

Wedges are the one thing that basically almost never match a set. That's why Cleveland, Callaway, Titleist, and TaylorMade (etc.) all have their own wedge sets.

Personally I've always liked the looks of Vokeys, but I encourage you to investigate:
a) the available finishes
b) the available technologies (spin milled grooves, etc.)
c) the general look of the wedge
d) the bounce and loft options available (though the latter should be about the same in all wedges, the former can vary wildly - not many 60 degree wedges have, for example, only 4 degrees bounce, but my Vokey does and I like it with that little).

some say a U-groove produces more spin than more traditional v-grove wedge. the nicklaus Duel slot wedge has a U grove. while a vokey(spin milled) has a u groove as well if you prefer a more tour proven wedge (thankyou iacas)

Correct me if I'm wrong but all of the new Cleveland wedges are cast not forged.

I just bought a new Mizuno R Series Black Nickle 54 degree wedge, which I love. The sole of the wedge has a grind on the toe and the heel which is nice on hard fairways.

If you want a u-grooved Vokey, they're the spin-milled ones and they're readily available, obviously.

I beg to differ about the forged wedges being harder to hit - my best shotmaking ever has come through the use of my forged wedge (60 degree), including a rather unusual chip-in from the sand just today.

If I were you, I'd hit the nearest Golf Galaxy, Dick's, or whatever shop, and demo a few wedges. When I went in looking for a lob wedge, I pulled five or six off the racks and made a beeline for the hitting cage. Rather than looking at brand, cost, or design, I just hit a bunch of balls with each club, and picked the one that I thought was best. If you get an hour of spare time to kill, I'd go that way.

Count me in as another who would recommend the Vokey wedges. I tried the Callaways the other day and I didn't like them as much. So there is an opinion from a slightly less accomplished golfer.

I think that's what I'm going to do this week. Just hit different shots with different wedges at the store until I find the one I like.

Let us know when you've decided. By the way, the top ranked wedges are Titleist Vokey SM and Cleveland CG10. You might want to put them on your demo list.

Forged and cast wedges are just about the same. Vokeys are cast, after all, because Bob Vokey says there's no performance or feel difference. I'll take his word for it.

ive had cleveland 588 gap and sand wedges for 12 years now. i just got a titleist spin milled 60.4 lob wedge and love it. the other two wedges will be titleist by the end of the summer.

by the way, did anyone catch the pga tour special on cbs yesterday. they were talking about wedges and interviewed bob vokey and all the head clubmakers from calloway, ping, titleist, etc.

Yeah, it wasn't bad. Unfortunately they really didn't get into the "science of golf" at all - it was just an hour-long introduction to some pretty basic information.

Personally I think Cleveland and Titleist are the best with CG10 and Vokey SM being the top two products. However, I noticed you play Callaway clubs so if I were you I'd also take a look at the X Forged, which I've heard nothing but good things about. Take those three and demo them, whatever you decide you can't make a bad choice.

But do make sure you get the loft and bounce configs that will fit your game and your playing conditions.

1 last question. I currently carry 12 clubs. Along with the wedge, I want to get a hybrid to take care of the gap beween my 5 wood and my 4 iron. My PW is 45deg and AW is 50deg. I definitely want to get a 56deg SW, but do I need a 60deg wedge?

for a long time, i just used the sand wedge around the green. if i needed more loft i just opened up the face. now that i have a lob wedge (60 degree), i can say it is more consistent than opening up the face on my 56 degree, and i use it on 80 percent of my bunker shots too. some people say it gets them into trouble, trying to hit impossible shots. some say it is the most important club in their bag. id get used to your 56 degree first, and see how many flop shots you do around the greens and figure it out from there.

I found the 60 degree wedge more then worth its money, especially around the green when you only have a few feet of green to work with, or in any other case when you need a lob shot. It's such that I rarely chip with my actual pitching wedge anymore, I prefer the 60 if I can help it.

If you want to bridge the gap between your 5 wood and 4 iron, nothing works better than a 3 iron.
