A person RSVP'd for a local meetup golf event (2 slots) with "my girlfriend and I will play best ball", can anyone please clarify?

Thanks...

They'll both play every hole with their own ball, the one with the better score of the two will count as their score. They play as one entity.

edit: Im PRETTY sure that's what he's referring to, someone please confirm this for me

Is this a tournament? Best Ball typically means what the poster above said, but unless it is a tournament that is a rare format to play.

Some people also confuse best ball with the scramble format.  They think that best ball means best shot.  Email them back and explain that best ball/better ball means best score.  Scramble means best shot.

Thanks for the replies so far - no it isn't a tournament, but a very informal outing where (I would think) score is pretty much irrelevant, which led to my confusion...

I would have to agree with CraiginKSA.  Many people confuse best ball with scramble.  I think what they meant was scramble but thought best ball was the format where they hit from the best shot.

I see this confusion even among regular golfers.

I always thought Best Ball and Scramble were the same thing!

Best Ball and Scramble events were about equally popular in the 1980s. Seems in 1990s the Scramble started to take over.

Best Ball was popular when held at exclusive courses where normal invites were rare. Play in a Best Ball at a famous course, and you have your own 18-hole score for the afternoon (nice memories, and a score you can post).

You don't get that in scrambles. Every year there's one scramble where my group uses a half-dozen of my approach shots, and I wonder what I would have scored on my own that day.

Scrambles are built for speed . You play the best shot of your group again and again. Last week on a long, tight Par 4, our second guy bombed one 270 yards down the middle; the rest of us skipped our drives. Also, the last three scrambles used a two-putt maximum rule. If everyone misses the first putt, you add a stroke and move on.

Focus, connect and follow through!

Nope.

Best Ball = you play your own ball the entire hole.

Scramble = you play the best shot out of your group the entire hole.

    • Day 36: back to some mirror work tonight. Need a bit more forearm roll in my feels to help with the shallowing.
    • _sigh_ so close to red text.  Went away for three days, but didn't do a practice morning-of-departure (Friday) nor evening-of-return (Sunday), so I had three misses, back to day one. Day 1, May 4 2026.  At home today, spent nearly an hour in my practice room, hitting about three dozen practice balls, primarily with my 6-iron.
    • Day 254 5-4 Arms off chest in backswing and downswing. Short swing, pause and then hit.  Hit foam balls. Keeping arching of wrist a focus as well.
    • I would think of it in terms of time. The time it takes to get the arm angle into a good position to deliver the club with proper shaft lean. Another component is rotation, but that is also a matter of timing. It relates to how the body stalls to give the golfer time to hit the ball. If you have to get 80+ degrees out of that right elbow in one third of a second versus 50 degrees in the same time then you have to steal time from somewhere. It is usually body rotation. That does not help with shaft lean.  I agree in that amateurs tend to make the swing more complicated than pro golfers.
    • I haven't been able to practice like I wanted and won't for the next week.  1. The weather sucks in Ohio this year. I have been mostly inside hitting foam balls. Just kind of my basic stuff.  2. I woke up last Saturday with a left side rib muscle on fire. If I turned or leaned a certain way it would spasm that almost buckled my knees. I have been taking a break to let that settle. I don't want to get a long term injury. I think I pinched a nerve or just aggravated a muscles.   3. I am going on a mini-vacation to Florida (screw you Ohio weather) with a friend, and rolling that into a work conference I have next week. I will be with out my clubs for a week.  I will be back next in two Fridays to hit the ground running with some warmer temps and better weather in Ohio, hopefully. I would really like to get more out on the course and the range.
