For the Aimpoint folks out there:

I am getting pretty good at a quick midpoint read.  It only takes a few seconds to get direction and an estimate of slope.  My question is on short putt reads or reads where you can't access the midpoint without crossing your opponents line.  What do you do in this situation?

Thanks,

Scott

I dont really know what you mean by "midpoint," but it sounds like you're talking about the situation where walking an arc would require you to walk on someone's line.

If the low/high inflection point is clear, I walk to find it, then eyeball the 90* line, which isn't too hard to see (same elevation as the hole).  From there I just eyeball my spot--am I halfway between the two?  45*.  Am I closer to the straight putt?  30*.

If the high/low inflection point is not clear, I usually walk the arch outside the other players ball. Its not as accurate, but I don't think I'm likely to be off by a lot.

If going to the midpoint would put me too near to someone else's line, on a shortish putt I'll probably just walk around the back side of the hole and find straight the old way. On a longer putt, provided the slope is at least somewhat constant, I would do a rough breakline read.

AimPoint changed slightly in how we read straight now. Go back for a brush-up course if you can. It's quite likely free.

Those are methods. Or go to the high side midpoint - just stay far enough away that you're not in your line. Or do a read at the quarter-point and adjust slightly.

I just emailed my instructor about a refresher course.  However, under "Fundamentals Follow-up" his website says: "Standard lesson rates apply for individual, semi-private and group sessions."  I love Aim Point and all, but I won't pay $200 for the same class.  I may look into a Level 2 class, but at $300, I'm not sure that the additional knowledge would be worth it.
