I have given advice on the course frequently, but never on the range. Almost all of it has been to some of my really bad buddies, but sometimes if I get paired up with someone who is consistently having a horrible time (whiffing, chunking, sculling, etc), I will offer something that is just meant to keep them from eating the barrel of a gun. It's always something simple and general that can just help them make decent contact based on what I'm seeing, like 'slow it down some', or 'just take a half swing'. I remember one guy who was swinging at mach 7 and barely making contact and I told him to just slow it down a bit, and he went from almost whiffing to almost parring every hole.

I dislike getting advice from people at the range. They always think they know "the fix", and it just distracts me from what I was working on to begin with.

There are some awful swings at the range, especially if you go to one with putt-putt, ice cream, batting cages and go-karts.  On a busy summer night, you could roll up with a bus full of pros and it would not matter much.

People practice at the range or at least they should be.  Someone watching me would have no idea if I just had a lousy swing or was over-exaggerating a new swing movement I was trying to include in my regular swing.  In either case I'd likely be hitting some lousy looking shots and someone might be tempted to try to "fix" me.  It's for that reason I never offer unsolicited advice.

I place it on the same level as congratulating an overweight woman on her pregnancy without knowing for certain she is pregnant, it might be a nice gesture or it could go horribly wrong.

    • Day 33 (13 Dec 25) - Worked on weight shift and resetting the left heel during downswing (after listening to a discussion on Golf School this morning on PGA Tour Radio).  It centered on how Jack Nicklaus lifted his lead heel and how long driver champs do as well.  Taking cues from that discussion, worked an exaggerated feel of the left heel working doing some swing drill in the backyard using the 7i.  Wrapped up the session by hitting a few low bump and run shots in the backyard - keeping the process slow and exaggerated.

    • It may not have been block practice, though, is one of the main points here. You may have been serving and from the same place, but you were likely trying to do slightly different things. It seems that would only be blocked practice if you were trying to hit the same exact ball hit to you to the same exact place in the far court. I'm not sure that's as random as if the ball that you're given to hit is at different places, too, but again…
