Hey all, just bought a brand new MacGregor MT fairway wood.  Got a steal of a deal on it.  Love the head shape but absolutely loathe the stock shaft.  Want to reshaft it.  Currently has a 60 gram regular flex graphite shaft.  Since I got the club so cheap, I'm thinking about experimenting with it.  I want to put a steel shaft in it (personal preference over graphite).  I'd cut the steel shaft an inch or two shorter than the existing graphite shaft.

Is this a feasible idea?  If so, does anyone has any recommendations for good steel wood shafts that aren't too heavy?

I'm also interested in hearing some comments on this. I have a 2014 mizuno jpx ez 3 wood that's not behaving and I think a lot of it is down to the stupidly long and light shaft. When I think back the fairway woods I've hit the best have all been steel shafts. Thinking of taking the steel shaft out of an old 5 wood and putting that into the jpx ez and playing it at 41.5 inches. I also have the 19 degree jpx ez hybrid that I'm tempted to put a 3 iron shaft in.

Suggest you research and  check out Nippon. Very consistent, high quality and can be had in various weights and flexes. Also Steelfiber may have the best of both worlds. I have heard good things about their product but no experience. Good luck in your search. -Marv

Make sure you get a steel shaft that's designed for a fairway wood or driver (modern tip likely 0.335").

Shafts made for irons will be either 0.355" (taper tip) or 0.370" (parallel tip), and won't fit into hosel.

Some are .350" but most are .335" these days.

I use an old Titleist 975f 5 wood with a steel DG S300 shaft and the one thing I would say is that the overall weight of the club is heavy is puts out my tempo a little when I then transition to an iron as my next shot with the noticeable swing feel difference. If it was something I wanted to get custom made now I would consider using the new XP95/Nippon/DG SL something that would be under 100grams in weight .

Good point. Has anyone gone back to .350" in woods or drivers recently? One variation on the SLDR driver supposedly had a .350" hosel and shaft to increase stability.

    • Feel like you are left side dominant. Keep the back of your glove running through impact. Keeps leading edge down without digging. You will pick them clean with some zip if the grass is nice and generally acceptable results off anything less than ideal. Works with both hingy or dead hand pitches and chips.
    • Day 52 (30 Apr 26) - Had planned a solo round, got invited to be part of trio that included a fmr mini tour pro.  Was fun playing back a set of tees and having to stay in my game plan. Both were very engaging and encouraging in the round.  A good day in working through and making smarter shot choices.

    • I mean, a golfer is trespassing and damaging property. So, golf rules don’t supersede state laws. 😉 Like, if it isn’t marked and is off golf property. The right thing to do is take an unplayable lie or take stroke and distance.  Also, this is a liability for the course. The homeowner could easily say the course is liable for damage done because they knowingly didn't mark their boundaries which allowed golfers to trespass and damage property.
    • Interestingly enough, if the course (the Committee in Rules terms) doesn't mark the boundaries, there is nothing out of bounds.  I realize that neighboring homeowners would take a dim view of golfers whacking balls from their backyards, but that's what the Definition of Out of Bounds requires. "All areas outside the boundary edge of the course as defined by the Committee."
