VoidOfEnigmas Tip of the Day: Tips for 50 yard chips

50 yard chips are imo one of the most difficult shots in the game, its hard to spin it, hold off spin, hit it exactly like you want to. Add some break and a lot of amateurs get confused on exactly how to play it.

1. As for all breaking putts especially of long range, sight in on the spot the ball would end up if it was dead straight, remember if you look towards the hole you have a good chance of pulling or pushing it towards the hole.

2. Practice this putt on the practice green, long putts or lag putts are a very difficult shot for an amateur to master. Remember a pro has 2 practice rounds, and a couple hours on the practice greens to be able to do what they do on the golf course.

3. control your back stroke. Lots of amateurs take the putter head back very far and wiggle coming into the ball resulting in a mis hit. The most important part of hitting a good long putt that you want to is hitting your sweet spot.

you chip from 50 yards?  I would consider that a pitch shot. I find msyelf mostly pitching the ball around the greens anyway not really chipping that many shots

Yea, I was about to say... I pitch from that distance. 3/4 60 degree wedge that checks on a heartbeat right at the pin.

I think I run into a situation that calls for a 50 yard chip shot once every other season.

Never really ever had a 50 yard chip shot, that 150 feet of green. I would call that a pitch shot, and its not that hard.

Depends on how you define pitches and chips. I've certainly hit 50-yard chips. And 80-yard pitches, and 2-yard pitches. I define them as: Chip - uses the leading edge of the club (i.e. shaft leaning forward a good bit) Pitch - uses the bounce (i.e. shaft not leaning forward a bunch, maybe even vertical to back slightly [the latter only if the ball is suspended slightly])
