1. 1. Go golfing (9 or 18) by yourself?

    • Absolutely, there's nothing wrong with doing that.

    • It's a little lousy, wait until you get another or several before going to a course.

This is such a good and true statement

I do it often but go to courses where there are no booked tee times. That way I am put in with two or three for a game, am on the course quickly and meet some really great people who often become friends and 'booked' games happen. Just get out there and play and it will all come together for you. Have a great time - I know you will.

There's nothing wrong with getting away from the world and other people and just playing 9 or 18 by yourself.

I prefer to play by myself. I've had to start playing in scrambles to get over the nerves of people watching me in the competitive spirit. The first scramble I ever played in was a 3 months ago. I lost 6 balls in the first 4 holes because I was so nervous and jumpy. I kept telling my team that I normally didn't shoot like this. After I settled down, 75% of the shots we used (best-ball) were mine. Felt great, good confidence builder.

When I was just learning how to play as a teenager...I use to go to a Par 3 course and play by myself all the time.  I would go after school and get in 9 holes.  I found it helped me develop a really good short game...as I could play the course with just 4 clubs....9 iron,  PW, SW and my putter.  My scores improved on the regular course I played the more I practiced at the Par 3 course.  As I got better, then I would play 9 holes on the regular course I played, to practice my fairway woods and long irons, intentionally leaving myself 180 yards or more from the green. Once you start finding friends to play with, and are faced with a shot you have made practicing by yourself,  you will have good memories of making the same type of shot and you'll be able to focus on hitting the shot you need to make without the negative thoughts.

I have friends that I play with sometimes but don't mind playing by myself.  Actually yesterday I went out and played 9 holes by myself.  I feel like I hit the ball well but my aim is off sometimes (mainly thanks to a bad hook I need to get rid of).  By playing with myself I was able to work on that and retry if I wanted to (not many people on the course so didn't have anyone behind me).

Hopefully one day I will feel good enough or confident enough to play at a larger course where they pair you with someone else if you come alone but as for now I don't mind being out there by myself.

Well- I don't have a problem doing anything else by myself, so I don't see why golf would be any different. I haven't been playing long and will be enjoying my first solo round tomorrow during twilight hours...i am pretty excited- I think it will be nice to put the world on hold for aminute....wish me luck..ill let you guys know how it goes

I play by myself more often than not. I don't really have any golf friends my age sadly :(

It's nice because I play at times of day where I can play 9 in an hour. I play at the course I work at, so some days I will just go around and around and around if its not busy. Another great thing is being able to put in my headphones and listen to music.

It sucks though sometimes. 2 weeks ago I holed out from 130 yards for an eagle and was the only one to witness it :(

Awards, Achievements, and Accolades

I don't mind playing alone but since I am not a member anywhere my golf spending limits me to a couple rounds a week I usually am able to find someone to play with.

Last year I got a year membership at a course near by. I played everyday after work. Most of the time I was by myself. I finished quick and was able to concentrate better. I made big gains during that time. I would love to be able to do this again. I felt it helped a lot.

Nike Mach Speed Black

Nike Dymo 3 wood

TaylorMade Burner 3 hybrid

En
Well, after the overwhelming percent of those who say (or do) play by themselves, I went out this evening.  Shot pretty good and the course was relatively empty.  I actually like it because if I was waiting for a group ahead of me, and no one was behind me, I'd practice a few chip shots that I had missed when I was scoring.  In fact, it gave me a chance to play out of the bunker a few times (that I had previously shot badly on), since I don't have much experience with being in bunkers. All in all, shot a 51 on 9 holes including a birdie on a Par 5.  Missed the eagle chip by a foot :/ I'll definitely be going solo more often, just so I can get some extra playing in.
My only caveat is that some singles expect to keep playing through foursomes repeatedly. If play is light and there are open holes coming up ok, but this is not the same as a slow foursome delaying everyone. I have seen singles throw temper tantrums, hit into groups etc. FWIW in hot weather I do what you were doing, add some on course practice, since play is light, often trying an alternate shot to compare the result and hit few range balls.

Im still too nervous to play alone.. teeing off in the first hole alone, being paired up with random people that will probably judge you on your bad shots, not having much to say, and feeling out of place. I love the game..but i dont feel i fit in just right..not yet anyways. If i truly get to play alone..fine.. but i hate being forced to a group. I paid.. i should be able to play with whom or without whom i want.

If the course is busy you should expect to be paired up. If you are a regular at a course and are known you will tend to be given some slack. As long as you don't pretend you are better than you are and are courteous, watch where others drives head etc I have never felt anyone judged me. Plus if you get paired with someone a bit better than you watching their decision making you will probably pick some things up. If someone offers unsolicited advice just tell them thanks but you have someone working with you and any thing more is an overload. Knowledge golfers won't usually do this anyway and the advice is usually worthless.

i usually take a couple of practice shot while i am waiting or extra putts on the green, thats the time to take a deep breath and chill or drink a cold one..........heck saturday i fluff one in the water dang, well tee another one up perfect shot to the green (why the hell could i not do that the first time) but i use that time to practice (makes perfect)

I have never played a round of golf alone but after reading this, I think I might just go play on wednesday. Just a thought though, how many of you would lay alone after an ace that no one was there to witness but you? :-O I realise that it only matters to you but it's a bit of a sickener that you were alone. I am however fortunate that that problem is not one that I should be too concerned about, hitting the green in one feels damn good right now. :-D

    • I would never do the extended warranty on the $50 slow cooker.  I also routinely reject the extended service plans on those toys we buy for the grand-kids.  I do consider them on higher cost items and will be more likely to get one if the product has a lot of "Electronic Tech" that is often the problem longer-term.  I also consider my intended length of ownership & usage.  If my thought is it would get replaced in 2-3 years then why bother but if I hope to use it for 10 years then more likely to get the extension. I did buy out a lease about a year ago.  Just prior to the lease end date the tablet locked up and would not function.  I got it repaired under the initial warranty and would not have bought it out if they had not been able to fix it since IMO once electronic issues start in a car they can be hard to track down & fix.  They did fix it but when I bought out the lease I paid up for the extended warranty the would cover electronic failures because my intent is to keep that car for another 8-10 years and I just do not trust the electronics to last.  Last week the touch screen went black and was unresponsive.  It reset on the 2nd time I restarted the car but that is exactly how the last malfunction started.  I fully expect to have a claim on that on repair under the extended warranty.  I do not recall the exact cost to fix last time since I did not pay it but I think it was @ $700-$800 and I suspect that will be higher next time.
    • Have you looked at Model Local Rule F-9 Relief from Tree Roots in or Close to Fairway?  You could extend this to cover exposed rocks.  The rule is recommended to be used only for areas relatively near the fairway, a player who hits a shot 20 yards in the woods doesn't really deserve relief.   Players can always take Unplayable Ball relief, they're not required to play it from a rock or a root.  Of course, they hate to take the penalty stroke too.
    • I agree with @klineka, you're clearly doing something right.  Its always going to be a bit of a guessing game if you don't have any scoring history.  On the other hand, understanding that it takes only 54 holes to establish an actual handicap, and they have about 6 weeks in which to play and post enough scores, I don't think its at all unreasonable to require them to have an official handicap before they become eligible for prizes.  I don't know how you structure the fees for the series of competitions, but if its possible they'll play with the group without being eligible for prizes, you could consider a way to let them do that without contributing to the prize pool.
    • I run tournaments and want to put in a local rule that allows relief from tree roots and rocks that are not loose impediments. We have some really terrible lies in some of our courses in my area and nobody is getting paid enough to break clubs. Let me know if you think the verbage for this rule makes sense. Local Rule Roots and Rocks You may move your ball from a tree root or buried rock one club length for free relief no closer to the hole. However you may not use this rule to get relief from a tree, bush, boulder, or other foliage hindering your swing. Your only option here is to play it as it lies or take an unplayable for a one stroke penalty.
    • Makes sense.  Like I said, I wouldn't have been upset at their original offer either, and based on the fine print it seems like they've held up their end of the deal.
