It's all starting for Hossler.  It's funny how a good showing like he had can open SO many doors and pave the way for a career.

Quote:
Beau Hossler came up just short in his bid to become low amateur at the U.S. Open, but the week wasn't a complete waste for the 17-year-old senior-to-be from California. For one, he held the lead in a major championship for a couple holes during the second round and received some serious airtime throughout the tournament. Also, his impressive play made an impression on AT&T; National tournament director Greg McLaughlin. Instead of getting one shot to tee it up with the best golfers in the world, Hossler will get another shot at Congressional (site of his first U.S. Open appearance) next week

The kid has a ton of confidence and the game to go with it.  Should be interesting to watch in the next few years.

Quote:
“The whole experience just helped my confidence,” Hossler said. “I just respect the games of those players so much. They’re the best in the world. But now, I think if I play well, I can play with them and compete.”

Well, for one, he's only 17. I believe the minimum age to turn pro is 18.

But your point is valid...it wouldn't surprise me if he changes his mind about that full ride scholarship to Texas. Maybe do a year or two & turn pro at age 20 or so.

did they make that rule after ty tryon debacle?

i'd like to see him rep his high school cap and polo this week instead of the UT threads he wore at olympic.

If he's really good enough to hang on the tour for a career, what's the rush?  Enjoy college.  Play some golf.  Go to some parties.  He can play the PGA tour until he's 50 and then compete on the senior tour for another 10 years.  Plenty of time to play pro golf if he has enough game.

That's bull imo. What's the rush? He's good enough already to reach the goal. Why the hell postpone it? To party?

Agree.  Don't see the rush with turning pro for young amateur golfers.  Too many young guys turn pro too early, don't perform well, and it kills their confidence.  Takes them years to bring it back.  Why not go to college, win a US Amateur, win a NCAA Individual Medalist title?  It's not like he's living in a shelter.  Let the game develop, the ability to compete at the highest level, etc.

He's still got a lot to learn, IMO. After the third round of the US Open, where he changed his game plan from being Top Amateur to winning the whole thing, he collapsed. I think he put a lot more pressure on himself that he put himself out of position and lost both the tournament and top amateur honors. I think a couple of years in collegiate golf will help him. I think Texas has a great golf program (this coming from a USC fan) and it'll probably do him good by attending a few seasons there.

Best Regards,
Ryan

Debacle? He played in the U.S. Open last year. Not even Tiger did that! I don't think it's out of the question that Hossler doesn't graduate, but I think it would be a mistake for him to go pro ASAP.

I hope the kid plays well.  A lot of people will be watching him that's for sure.

One good event does not make a career. Not for Beau not for anyone. If he doesn't make the cut reality will come calling.

I agree. I think a Heisman Trophy winner, or even a football player who is likely to go early in the first round, is crazy to stay in college, because it would be so easy to suffer a career-ending injury. And even a safe but lackluster season could cost him millions on his initial contract. But a golfer is not likely to be severely injured, and apart from endorsements, he doesn't get a contract, he earns what he earns. So it makes a lot more sense to enjoy all the other benefits of college before turning pro -- unless it becomes obvious that he is ready to win on tour, like it was for Tiger and Phil.

debacle as in after he survived q school at 17 in 2001, and then promptly vanished off the face of the earth a few years later.  do you think knowing then what he knows now, he'd still choose to turn pro so young?

I blame his parents.  His dad really pushed him hard from a young age.  Then gave him too much freedom to be an idiot when he turned pro.  I remember hearing a story about how he was supposed to play a round with Arnie at Bay Hill.  This was shortly after he turned pro and the whole world was talking about him.  He showed up 45 minutes late for his tee time, then sped into the Bay Hill lot with his music blaring so loud you could hear it on the first tee.  Arnie just walked off and they told Ty to go home.

    • Day 35 (26 Feb 25) - Day of easy work (hanging around the house as son had shoulder surgery and I needed to help keep an eye on him).  Worked on low spinner 50deg wedges - keeping the ball low flighted and checking quick.  Went with the 8i after to do low flighted runners.  Great visit on two ways to get the same/similar results.  May be able to get away tomorrow for a short 9hole round (as long as the son's recovery cooperates).....
    • Day 1: 2/26/2025: So, I'm starting over on this again.  My son brought home the mother of all flu bugs from school. It raged though our house and knocked me on my butt for about 3 days.  Now, that I think I'm clear of the death plague my son gave me. I was able to rise early this morning and get some nice mirror work in. I felt stiff like a board for the first few swings, but loosened up and was able to get at least 20 minutes of first robotic slow swings and then gradually more fluid swings.  My focus was on the timing and fluidity of my priority pieces.
    • I use a MagSafe connector on my tripod. Occasionally I use those clips.
    • Working on some swing videos. What are you guys having the best luck with as far as devices used to record the swing?  I have a tripod with a magnet that I stick my phone on but it is somewhat of a pain because I have to remove the cover on my phone and when I pull it off the magnet the tripod head changes and moves position. I was thinking something more like an ipad maybe. On a different style tripod and maybe even set it up to mirror to a tv.
