So I wonder how Jim Justice feels after shelling out 1.8 million to Tiger and 1 million for Phil to play the Greenbrier only to have both players miss the cut for the weekend?

Quote:

According to a source close to Justice, Tiger Woods was paid — indirectly, so as not to contravene PGA Tour rules that prohibit appearance fees — $1.8 million to sprinkle star dust on the Old White course this week.

For the second straight year, Justice indirectly paid Phil Mickelson $1 million and, for the second straight year, the Californian left the stately Greenbrier resort early after laying an egg.

They still sell tickets and advertising prior to the event by promoting the fact that they will be there so while it wasn't probably the desired outcome, I don't think it was a total loss.

It has to be disappointing. When Tiger played the Honda, they brought in extra bleachers, porta pots, food, drink, concession, buses, etc. He was close to not making the cut but finished birdie-birdie to squeak in. I was thinking about all those extra hot dogs that they bought would go to waste as he boosted attendance and how many people would not come if he missed the cut. Since he made the cut that weekend (remember the big Sunday finish) record crowds continued so there was no loss. The big question is how was attendance affected on Saturday and Sunday at the Greenbrier compared to Thursday and Friday and how was it compared to the year before?

I'm confused. What does 'sprinkle star dust on the Old White Course' mean? And how did that 'coax' Tiger & Phil to play it? And how did that money find its way into Tiger & Phil's bank accounts?

If it means Justice put some money into the event to coax Tiger & Phil to play, well, it worked. They played.

While I'm sure Justice is disappointed that he didn't get the Sunday ratings boost he would have gotten from having Tiger and Phil in contention he still had the two of them there for the pro-am and other hospitality outings that make up a significant portion of the revenue and attention generation of a PGA tournament.  It was a gamble on Justice's part, but it was one with significant hedging.

i can only imagine the lack of turnout they would have gotten - i'm sure a lot of the people who drove 5+ hours would've stayed home had tiger/phil not participated.

Until someone goes on record it is all just speculative BS, IMO.

But then again, what the hell do I know?

This type of story is not new. Word was Tiger got some compensation for playing in the Fry's. Who knows, I am sure they make it really hard to prove.

No...that is not true.... The Melbourne government paid TW 3 million big ones for the tournament in 2009...just before his life unraveled.... Ray

    • Is it? I bought the Stack radar to replace my PRGR based on what Stack told me! When I am swinging for speed, the PRGR would miss 50%-80% of my backswings due to a higher speed. The stack seldom misses those- at least for me.
    • As an analyst by nature, I would like to compare the scores under both systems. It is something we can easily do if we have the data. I actually thought the new system was less fair to those whose game was on the decline - like mine! Old: Best 10 of last 20 scores with the .96 multiplier. Course handicap excluded course rating and overall par. New: Best 8/20. Course handicap includes course rating -par. My understanding is Stableford caps scores at Net double bogey like stroke play. If so, handicap should be slower to rise because you are only using 8 versus 10 scores. If I am missing something, I am curious enough to  want to understand what that may be. My home course tees that I play are 72.1/154 now. My best score out here is 82. When my game started to decline, my handicap didn’t budge for 13 rounds because of good scores in my first 8! I know I am an anomaly but my handicap has increased almost 80% in the past few years (with only a few rounds this year). For a few months I knew I was losing every bet because my game was nowhere near my handicap. I suspect I have steamrolled a few nuances but that shouldn’t matter much. When I have modeled this with someone playing the same tees and course, one good round, or return to form, will immediately reduce the handicap by some amount.
