What irons should I buy?

20 posts in this topic

This thread is in accordance to me finding out what irons I should buy. I'm 20 years old and have played all my life, currently have old Titleist irons and am interested mainly in the AP2 710 or 712 irons but am open for any other suggestions. I am around a 6 handicap, and play fairly consistent throughout the year. I hit my irons now abnormally far, with a PW reaching 160-165. I've become accustomed to my distances and worked my way around some problems with that. My ball striking is the best part of my game (most days) and I play fairly often. If anyone has any suggestions as to what I shoudl look into, it would be greatly appreciated.

Your pitching wedge goes 165? Wow.

I'd say that you really just need to hit a ton of clubs and see what you like. The AP2s are great clubs but there are a lot of other ones out there as well. I'm in the process of reviewing the Nike VR_S Forged irons and so far I'm liking those a lot. Also great sets from Adams, Mizuno, Callaway, Cleveland, etc.

I'd suggest you learn to stop hooding the faces of your irons.  Then consider a new iron purchase.

I am not sure what irons you have now, but if you are playing with a game improvement iron then that pw you are hitting is probably 44 degrees. Getting into an AP2 will help with that as the pw is set at 47. I had my pw bent to 48 so that it could be even closer to my sw. My club guy told me I was one of the few guys who weakened my lofts. At a 6 hc the AP2 would be my choice.

Holy moly.  A 165 yd PW?!  You must definitely have a dime-sized burn mark low in the center of that clubface.

I would vote for the Titleist 712 MBs for you.  Beautiful sticks.

The Cleveland 855 MBs are pretty and hard to hit also...

I would do a combo of CB/MB for either Titleist or Cleveland. Theres no reason to have MB long irons.

As a 6.2 you might enjoy a good fitting. There are dozens of heads that might work for you, and shafts may have improved and changed a great deal since your "old" clubs were made. Of course you are 20 so "old" could mean five years...

What are you hoping to accomplish with new irons?

That's like asking what someone hopes to accomplish with a new car or a new girlfriend. They're beautiful, shiny, and fun to ride.

With the added confidence and elevated spirit, he might be hitting 175 yd PWs!

Got any pics of those Cleveland 855 MBs?

The next irons I'm getting are going to be Wilson Staff Ci11's. They are for a mid handicap player. They are extremely under rated.

The AP2's are great irons.  And since distance doesn't seem to be a problem, check out Mizuno MP59's (probably less distance than the AP2's, but the best feel irons out there, IMO).

I currently play the MP52's and love them.  My next set would be between AP2's and MP59's at this point.

Good luck!

Try some Callaway Razr X Musclebacks and let me know how good it feels to hit them consistently. I tried these and absolutely loved the feel of them but I didn't hit them consistent enough to justify $1000. I settled for the Razr x HL. If you are a legit 6 handicap, which I have no reason to believe you are not, you can probably hit them well or at least have the talent to. Just don't ask for free stuff lol .

How do you like the razr x HLs? I'm a high handicapper and thinking about getting them. The set I'm looking at has 4h 5h and 6-sw

I was fitted for a set about 3 months ago and I have to say I love them. I hit them sweet and they make me feel I can really play this crazy game. I'm an 18 hc and came off a set of Ping Zing 2 w/graphite shafts. I really thought I would always play graphite but during the fitting I also tried the std steel and then the True Temper GS-95 (reg flex) shaft. The GS-95 far and away beat the other shafts, I am extremly happy with my new sticks. I play TM hybrids and only purchased the 6-9 and 4 wedges all bent 2* up. Love'em!!!! I can honestly say after a few months (playing once a week) they have taken 2 strokes off my round (and we are still playing winter golf). I am breaking 90 more often now.
