Do you know people that think they drive the ball further than they actually do?

I just played with two guys that were convinced I must be hitting it 270-280 since I was outdriving them. My very best drive, with roll, was just short of 240. They'd been telling me for weeks that driving was the best part of their game and that they both averaged about 260 off the tee. I love it. Most don't have a clue.

I chatted with a young man on the range about drivers once. He was bragging about how his Cobra driver had a pro shaft, etc. etc. I asked him what his clubhead speed was, and he said 140 mph. I told him there was no way in hell, and perhaps he meant that was his ball speed. He insisted he was correct, and proceeded to demonstrate by hitting a few balls about 230 yards. I just smiled and nodded, but it was all I could do not to laugh at that poseur.

The way I like to describe it when I'm not sure... I say "I played that par 4 great! 450 yards... driver, 8 iron and 2 putts.". All I'm stating are facts... I let the listener guess at the distances.

i played in a cga event several years back at tanglewood, and i felt like i had never played golf before. i left there with such a bad taste in my mouth because i played so poorly and couldn't figure out why the course is rated so highly amongst nc courses. best i can remember, we played the back tees, and i am not very long off the tee, so i had 3, 4 & 5 irons in to nearly every green.

That would explain it. We rarely play from the back tees in tournaments because it is so long and difficult. There's a reason it is rated at a 74.5 from those tees. If you're not hitting it at least 250 (and straight) off the tee then you'll have a very hard time. I've broken 70 from the blues (around 6600) a few times, but never from the back tees. You'll see a different and more playable course from the blues.

where else do you play at? any nc gems out there that i don't know about?

I mostly play Tanglewood, Salem Glen and Oak Valley. They are all within 5 miles of each other (and my house.) All are good courses that require you to hit just about every club in your bag. If you haven't played those other two courses, give them a shot. Oak Hollow (in High Point) is probably the best Muni course i've ever played. It's under $40 on the weekend and is a good, short but challenging course. I believe it is a Pete Dye design and runs along the lake for 5-6 holes. Beautiful views...

There are some good tracks in the Pinehurst (as you already know I'm sure). You're pretty close to Old North State. It's private, but they have some CGA events that go through there early in the year if I'm not mistaken. I've played that before (with a member) and was blown away...it's a top-notch course and probably one of the best I've ever played. If you get a chance to play there, just do it. Don't worry about cost. I haven't played many other tracks down your way so I can't recommend much in that area. Good luck...

Fairways and Greens.

most people over estimate... but the groups i usually play with are all pretty honest and we know that 300+ is pretty huge. if you hit a massive shot mentally pick a landmark where the tees are, and where the balls ends up.. like near a certain tree... and check google earth. you can measure on that down to pretty close gps yardages

I was talking to someone that said they averaged 310, and could get it out to 350 if they needed to. I just smiled and said "wow", and later laughed about it. I mean 310? I hope he doesn't actually believe it...

I actually played with a guy in my foursome who did bust the ball out there about 300. His problem was sprayed tee shots, though, and he took a 15 on one hole after hitting four consecutive shots out of bounds.

I laid into the ball a few times and bumped it out there about 280, but I average 240-250. The flex on the shaft is killing me. I can hit it 300, but the shaft bends like a garden hose and I spray my shots when I do that.

Great post. I just spent 30 minutes on there checking out how far I don't hit a ball.

Another way to find out how far you don't hit it is to stand at your ball and use your rangefinder to shoot the yardage to the guys on the tee waiting for you to quit dicking around. As long as you give them a little wave, change clubs four or five times and then chunk it 50 yards, they won't mind. Bonus points if you throw your club back towards the tee, then have to walk back and pick it up. As your cart partner drives away laughing.

I don't know why I'm fired out of a cannon today, but this isn't directed at anyone, I'm just stream of consciousness typing.

I know I am certainly no big bomber but one thing that really made me realize it was seeing PGA players in person. I was lucky enough to see the Telus skins game in 2005 at Nicklaus North in Whistler BC. I had only been playing for one year at the time and I remember watching John Daly (and to a lesser extent Vijay Singh) launch them out there. (Note: The other wake up call was watching Jack Nicklaus play so much better then I ever will and still be talking about being over the hill and not able to compete.) If a ball ever came off my driver like they did I would probably just call it a day and walk off the course, first hole or not. It would be all down hill from there. I guarantee you take your so-called long bomber friend to see the tour they think differently about how long they are.

I think it's hilarious reading some posts ( not here) on sites that do club reviews, and reading how this 27 handicap hits the ball 290-310yds..LOL!

I guess I'm that guy with a 27 handicap that can't hit it 300.

As soon as I can figure out how to post pics, I'll put some up for you--hater! ;)

Instead of "thinking" you can hit it 300 yards with that 27 handicap of yours, try spending some time around the chipping\putting green...

You made me do this...

Maybe that's how the long the longest hole at your home course is..."322" yards.... Now get us a picture of you making a 3 footer to save par...

    • Day 129: 5/4/24 Stack training but could not certify my warmup speed. Dealing with a pulled neck muscle. Chips and pitches at a local course for about 15 minutes.
    • Typically less than 50. I find this can be affected by the "CART" signs on a given course. I don't like taking my rangefinder out of the cart and carrying it around to the green. I am very fearful I will leave it somewhere.
    • First ever holed out greenside bunker shot! It's crazy it took this long to finally get one during a round, but the cold streak is officially over. Hole 6 on the Palmer Course at PGAN. I hit my driver like 225 into a really stiff wind, then worm burned a hybrid into the bunker. I was about I dunno, 40-45 feet away. Birdie! Let's go! The red Xs the approximate location of each shot.  Really fun!!
    • Day 23: Rained all day, so no ball hitting. Worked indoors on top of the backswing feel, and also putted around the living room working on bead.
    • Played Four Oaks in Dracut today going back to the 2 man scramble match play format. My brother and I shot a team 81 winning 3 and 2. Had so many good shots today using a more centered turn. Seems to have really iginited my golf game. We'll see if I can keep it going.
