Erik, will this drill help with my driver problems?  My driver shots balloon.  Generally they start out straight or a bit right, and then fade a bit more.  They fly very short when I hit them this way.

I don't know. It's primarily for people who pull and slice, as I said. Balloons are usually too much backspin if you define "balloon" the same way I do.

Does the weight of the tire help? I would think it is easier to feel the difference with a heavier object. Kind of like the rock throwing drill for extension. Lynn Blake use badminton rackets to demonstrate how you keep the arms from rotating too early, but it feels less productive with such light objects. If anything, I'd like the, to be heavier than a club, to give a better feedback on what you are really doing. Good players keep the 3rd accumulator "loaded" pretty long on the downswing. Really starts rotating around A6, where things start to unhinge. Things happen really fast from A6 to A7. Do you actively learn to release #3, or does it happen somewhat by itself, from the arms and hands trying to get the sweetspot on the ball? I haven't tried this myself, but is it right to assume that just swinging the tire would put it on a better plane than the ones we see from a lot of people? We can easily change the paths with a golf club, but a tire would throw you more off balance if you tried throwing it over the top.

The weight of the rock was important in the extension drill. It's not particularly relevant for this, no.

Some people have to learn to do it a little bit. Others have to learn to do it differently. :) Sorry, I can't be more specific about it. I don't want to give general advice when it won't apply to enough people.

Probably, but again, that's not really the purpose, to actually throw the tire or swing it at much speed.

Have come to love this drill the last couple days. Have a tendency to throw the club, and spin the hips so I think it's right up my alley.

Thanks

For those of you who don't have dirty old tires to practice with, :-P, I did this with a book in my office.

    • I'm not sure you're calculating the number of strokes you would need to give correctly. The way I figure it, a 6.9 index golfer playing from tees that are rated 70.8/126 would have a course handicap of 6. A 20-index golfer playing from tees that are rated 64/106 would have a course handicap of 11. Therefore, based on the example above, assuming this is the same golf course and these index & slope numbers are based on the different tees, you should only have to give 5 strokes (or one stroke on the five most difficult holes if match play) not 6. Regardless, I get your point...the average golfer has no understanding of how the system works and trying to explain it to people, who haven't bothered to read the documentation provided by either the USGA or the R&A, is hopeless. In any case, I think the WHS as it currently is, does the best job possible of leveling the playing field and I think most golfers (obviously, based on the back & forth on this thread, not all golfers) at least comprehend that.

    • Yes it's true in a large sample like a tournament a bunch of 20 handicaps shouldn't get 13 strokes more than you. One of them will have a day and win. But two on one, the 7 handicap is going to cover those 13 strokes the vast majority of the time. 20 handicaps are shit players. With super high variance and a very asymmetrical distribution of scores. Yes they shoot 85 every once in a while. But they shoot 110 way more often. A 7 handicap's equivalent is shooting 74 every once in a while but... 86 way more often?
