Haven't posted in awhile....sorry. So since my last post I have improved my game, nothing spectacular but last week I played a pretty wide open course and shot a 49 on 9 holes AND got shot my first ever par on the first hole.... so getting there.

I've been looking at possibly getting new clubs, specifically new irons, and wanted to know if I'm at a point to start looking for new clubs or if I'm just having a "I want something new and shiny" moment.

I now would like to take a moment to apologize for the TON of information I'm about to put out there, just want to give you all the details.....

Here's what I have:

Top Flite Cannon 460cc 10.5" loft

TI-Power 3 and 5 wood (not sure of the loft)

3,4,6,7,8 Northwestern (Tom Weiskopf) irons with new(er) Medalist grips. All are in roughly the same condition.

Acer XDS pro 5 iron

Trend XTS 56 wedge

Next CX3 60 wedge

I also have a "Head" pitching wedge

More info on me... I am 5'5" and have a floor to wrist measurement of 30"

I do not know what my swing speed is, though I use to play with a 4 hybrid with a regular flex graphite shaft and it always felt "lose" to me but I haven't tried to swing it in awhile.

I am on a budget, I CANNOT drop $300 to $400 on a set of irons. I would like to keep it to $150 tops on irons.

I have no problem going the used route and I have looked into clones such as GigaGolf and Pinemeadow and would have no problem playing a set of clones if the price is right and the quality is decent.... I do not play enough to care if I have name brand clubs or not.

Sorry for the long post and thank you for any feedback

I forgot to mention that I recently have read a lot of articles/forum posts/reviews on "game improvement" irons, sounds like something I should look into.

I have been right where you are now breaking 100 with old clubs and wondering if its time buy new ones. IMO I think it depends on how much you are going to work on your game and try and improve, if you are going to work on your game and try and get your scores lower I would buy a few years old used set (game improvement or whatever) off ebay, they will be great for now and help your game. Then when you actually start too shoot lower, I would consider getting fitted and buying new clubs because your swing will be much different from when you were shooting a 100.

If you are happy with your score right now, then I would think about getting fitted right now and buying new clubs. So I guess my answer is yes buy new clubs.

Well it's good to know that I'm not crazy to try and buy new clubs. As far as getting new clubs... Is used the best way to go? Should I even bother with clones? What brands should I look at and am I right in going for "game improvement" clubs?

Wow. I would say anything would be an up grade...

Agreed.  If you don't mind "chunky" clubs, a set of SGI irons would do you wonders, IMO.

I paid $130 for my Big Bertha 2004 irons.  There are a ton of quality iron sets that are 5+ years old that can be had cheap.

But, at 5'5", a fitting probably should be in the not so distant future.

Hmm that's kind of a tough question since there is just so many clubs to choose from, I really think for your very first set used is the way to go. IMO you really wont know what kind of clubs you like until you play with a set for a while, thats why I would say buy used for your first set.

Its so hard to recommend clubs, I would try and go to GolfSmith, Dicks etc. and try hitting quite a few different irons very forgiving to medium forgiveness. Then when you find something you like see if you can find an older used model or close.

That's what I would do.

I would go used, and stay away from clones.  As I mentioned, you can get great quality, name brand sets that retailed for $1,000 5 years ago for $150.  Irons are not that different over the last 10 years or so.

Do you golf with anyone that has other types of clubs?  Ask to swing other people's 6 or 7 iron to get a feel for the different types and brands.

Just out of curiosity why the backlash against clones? As a guitarist I play knockoffs all the time, they don't appreciate in value like the name brands and the fit and finish isn't always as good... but a lot of times you get a guitar that's not too far off a name brand guitar for half the price. So, honest question, how does this differ in golf?

It may not be any different.  I have nothing against them.  Just a personal preference.

Play whatever you're comfortable with.  I wouldn't be comfortable with them.

Agree, play whatever you want, but you can get clubs, 4 or 5 gens behind he current releases, for really good prices on a used set - you should be able to hit your price point. Whatever you end up with, upgrading should help if you're trying to improve.

I agree with Gresh24 , a fitting no matter which way you go ..used or clone....should be a must ,your game should improve immensely.Assuming you are playing with standard length clubs at 5'5" it must throw the lie angle right out.

I've been choking up, I basically place my right hand thumb on top of the "alignment marker" at the bottom of the grip. My uncle was my height and I know that he played with shorter clubs so I will definitely look that way soon. I do have a stupid rookie question.....

Could you explain more about the "lie angle"

This video clip from Golf Warehouse Atlanta explains lie angle in detail.

As for new clubs, you will probably be rebuilding your bag a few at a time. If you can hit your driver and 3, 5W OK, hang onto those for the time being.

If you can get a decent set of matching irons, this will help your swing consistency a lot. Since you are 5-foot-5, I would suggest you find a decent golf shop and tell the staff you need help on used irons. That way you can test-hit the irons before you buy, and they can tweak them to your height/lie angle in a basic fitting.

Don't be afraid to play SGI irons. The clubheads are designed to get the shots airborne

If you have friends who are regular golfers you might ask them for advice in finding a shop. Good luck, and keep us posted.

    • Day 3: about 20 minutes of putting on the practice green. Focused on putts within 10 feet.
    • I don't have enough details to know what to tell you, man. If they were walking across, to play devil's advocate, maybe just wait another 10 seconds next time.
    • Day 11: Putts with a metronome and worked on some feels for greenside shots.
    • I realize the frame cuts off my tail but wanted to specifically see my hand path and club shaft and head travel from A5 to A7 with the grip and posture work I have been doing . This might be the shallowest I have managed to get the club head to enter into impact. I like the finish much more as well.
    • Context:  I used to play golf very regularly (and when I'm playing regularly, I'm on TST regularly).  In summer 2022, I got my handicap down to a personal-best 11.9.  Unfortunately, in the three years since then, I've had far less time to play, and didn't really make the time to practice.  I've played a bit more the past few months, and I anticipate having a lot more time to practice starting in about two months, at which point I'm hoping to go back to my old practice habits (practicing daily, Evolvr lessons, spending more time on TST (come to think of it, I can do that important last part now)).   But it was thinking about how different my nines have been a few times in the past month or so that made me wonder if there was a thread here about it, and sure enough, there was.  In the past month or so, I've had a 38-46 and a 45-39.
