Ok so I'm at a complete loss right now. I've been talking to a buddy of mine that works at a local pro shop with a launch monitor about my driver woes. He offered me a session to see what we could figure out. So I took my 3 iron and my driver and I am more confused/concerned than I was before. I started with my driver (R7 425) and put out decent numbers everywhere but my carry distance. I held my swing speed in the 100-105 mph and a spin rate between 2500 and 3000 HOWEVER my carry was between 245-255 yards. Next I put my 3 iron to the test, after taking a few swings we turned the monitor back on. Swing speed was 105-108 mph spin rate was 2800-3200 and carry was 225-235. I was a little thrown by just HOW close these clubs performed so we went out and grabbed a Titleist 910 D3 9.5 with 2 different shafts (both stiff). I took a few swings with it and it was feeling pretty good so we turned the monitor back on. Again my swing speed was 100-105 mph, spin rate of 2500-3300 between the 2 however the carry of these drivers were 240-255 yards.
So like I said before I'm SUPER confused as to why I'm hitting my 3 iron so close to the distance of my driver.

Not really to bash technology, but I would go to a driving range and see if they a really that close. I have heard of some skewed data coming from machines.

sadly his printer was out of ink so I didn't get ALL of the info, and i'm not positive on the monitor model I'm going to be heading back for another session before too long to get the print out and I will get the monitor info then as well.

as far as the 3 iron, I am confident in it's read out as I have been doing some charting lately as I have a tournament coming up and I have been right on from 225 - 230 out with it on course and the range.

You could print to a pdf and have him email it. Primo pdf is free to use.

how do you consistently swing a 3 iron that fast. My driver swing speed is 105 but I probably swing my 3 iron at 70 if that.

I just started golfing a couple weeks ago as my baseball career ended. I started off horrible but have improved, shooting around 95 on my par 72 home course. My biggest problem is my drive. I have such a bad slice and I don't know how to prevent it. I really try to focus on turning my right wrist over my left (I'm RH) but most of the time its a nasty slice. I went to the range today and I hit both my 3 iron and 3 wood further and straighter than my driver. I don't understand what is wrong with my drive. I have the same swing, why are my drives the only balls i hit that slice?

Crossing the arms is encouraged, but your swing path for the driver must be out-to-in (over the top).

To OP, I agree, go to the range and see if they are of similar carry.

after discussing with a few people we think that the speed of my 3 iron may be skewed if the monitor wasn't switched from reading a driver. I plan on taking a trip back to the pro shop soon to first off get a print out and 2nd off make sure the monitor is changed for my 3 iron. As far as carry I've hit multiple tee shots on some par 4's and 5's as I've been out and my 3 iron is with in yards of my drive and usually dead straight with the ability to draw or fade if needed (one thing i've never had with a driver)

    • Day 22: mirror work for a while. Working on my elbow in the downswing - keeping it in a better position.
    • Day 36 (16 Dec 25) - continued the exaggerated left foot weight shift trigger adding some easy low flighted pitches with the 5h and a few putting style bump and runs with the 5h as well.
    • Day 442 - 2025-12-16 Got some swings in at an indoor academy a little south of Erie.
    • Has anyone played the new Maxfli forged irons? For the first time in I don't know how many years, they have come out with new clubs. From what I read, Maxfli was bought by Taylor Made a long time ago which then took all of their ball making technology and patents in order to get into that market. The club business was left to whither and the reorganized company, now a part of Dicks / Golfworks / Maltby, is producing these new clubs. (Their Tour X balls which I play are really good.) Anyway, I tried them both out at Golf Galaxy. There's a player's distance iron (XC-3) and a blade (XC-2) and both feel really, really nice, almost "Mizuno-like" in their soft buttery feel and they're a bargain at $800 for a set. I'm planning to ditch my Titleist's and want to go back to a forged iron. I almost pulled the trigger on the Mizuno Pro-245's last summer, but a damaged tendon sheath in my finger combined with a back injury messed up my golf game so I held off. Now the Pro-245's are no longer available, soon to be replaced by the MX-15. (At twice the price of the Maxfli's...that's what got my attention in the first place.) If anyone has played with the new Maxfli's or just tried them out like I did, let me know what you think.
    • Day 126 12-16 Back swing and rotation work today. Didn't hit any balls. Focusing on rotating and getting to lead side.
