I started this thread a while ago and got a bunch of tips but I just can't seem to get anything to work. I can hit one with my driver but that seems to be the only club.  Ive gotten a lot better this year shot my 1st round in the 80's in almost a decade and it was from the tips on a legit course. My goal for the year was to learn how to hit a draw with my irons and I just can't get it down I'd really love some help please.

Which irons are you talking about.

Other than a 3, 4, or 5 iron why would you want to hit a draw with your irons?

You want the ball to come in soft to the green not hard and running.

If you can reach the greens in regulation with your driver and an iron why bother trying to draw the ball with an iron?

Should be no problem hitting the ball high with draws.  Golfers tend to hit the ball lower with draws because they are hitting PULL draws.  They are taught they have to have the face closed (aimed left) to the target.  The guys I show in the video above have no problem holding the greens.  Functional draws are hit with a face aimed right of the target.

My friend that I have the pleasure of getting to watch play hits draws with every club and has no problem holding greens. I want to hit that shot cause there are a lot of times at the course I play it would be better to start the ball out at the middle of the green and draw it towards the pin on the left instead of try to hit it left of the green and fade it back to the green. If I miss hit the draw the odds are i'd still be putting.

I learnt to hit a draw using a 6 iron, easy enough to draw and wont really smother the ball too much.

If you can hit a straight ball, you can quite easily learn to hit a draw or fade (its a lot easier if you have a pretty consistent swing though.)

1) Aim everything 30 yds right of target, feet/knees/hips/shoulders/swingpath/clubface.

2) Release grip, close clubface to point 20 yds right of target, regrip.

3) Swing down the path your aimed at (30 yds right), dont hold the club off - ie let it release!

Helps if you play the ball back a touch, and a wee bit more towards the heel of the club.

The above is a bit of a dummies guide (no offence intended), It really is pretty easy once you get the idea & feel, its quite a personal thing how you work the ball, everyone has their own feelings they try to convey to help someone "get it"

Get a medium draw with the 6 iron going first, then worry about the high/low gentle/hard options.

Just keep at it, you will "get it", and you'll be practicing fades, draws, hards draws, squeezed fades, high baby draws just for fun (and it really is fun).

Good luck

Sorry, but I'm going to ask.  If you just broke 90 - and shot in the 80's - and it was a rare feat.  Why are you so concerned about ball flight, and hitting a draw?  My guess is that you are inconsistent as hell with your ball striking in general if you are struggling to break 90.  So my advice would be to focus on simply hitting a consistent low point in your swing.  And not worry so much about hitting a fade or a draw at this stage.

You gotta have a consistent low point to improve your ball striking.  And improved ball striking will lower your scores a lot faster than worrying about how to hit a draw.  A lot of folks have no idea that they should be hitting the ball first, then taking a divot as described within this video.

If you can consistently find your low point... Then please forgive me and go back to worrying about hitting draws.

Beachcomber I played a lot of golf 7 or 8 years ago then gave it up almost completely. I was a younger and could swing out of my shoes and still play a pretty decent game. When I decided to pick it up again this year I found out I couldn't swing like that and play anymore so I revamped my whole swing.  It took all summer here in wisconsin but Ive seemed to get my new swing down Ive had a bunch of decent rounds just couldn't get into the 80's. I play the back tees so I can get a real score and not to sound like a jerk but the draw was one of my goals and that what I want to do. It shouldn't matter what I shoot I just want to learn how to hit a shot. My ball striking is good enough my real struggles have been around the green and I get a fade/slice with my long irons and all the courses I play have long par 3's.

That is all fine and dandy... But you don't have a myswing thread.  I'd recommend you start one so that we can see what you are doing.  It's much easier to diagnose how to modify your swing and hit a draw - if we could see your swing.

You state that you are hitting a fades/slices with your longer irons... The quickest way to modify your swing is at address.

At Address:

1.) Close your stance line to the target line (if you're right handed golfer - aim your feet and shoulders right of the target).

2.) Strengthen your grip.

a.) Move your left hand such that the left thumb is on the right side of the shaft.

b.) Place your right hand such that the trigger finger on your right hand is on the side of the shaft.

3.) Play the ball back in your stance - instead of front foot - play it middle or even slightly back from there.

4.) Press your hands forward - with a forward shaft lean at address (hands should be slightly ahead of the ball)... This will deloft the club a hint.

5.) Get your weight favored to your front foot (left foot for a right hander).

a.) Practice with 60 to 70% of your weight on your front foot at address - then you will get the feel for a forward shaft lean and hitting down on the ball with your weight forward.

6.) Make sure your head stays still - and behind the ball at address (secondary axis tilt).

Items 1 to 4 should help with hitting a draw.  Items 5 and 6 will help you with consistent contact.

Then the rest is path...

a.) On your backswing - go on an inside path.

b.) On your downswing - swing out as you're swinging between 1st and 2nd base (right of your target line).

c.) Don't forget to slide your hips laterally toward the target (hip bump).... But maintain a steady head.

Lastly, get a VisionTrack and it will help you hit draws.

me either ... at least not on command.   I hit a draw with my irons, and a slice with my driver & 3W.     Consistently.      Quite bizarre actually ...

Sometimes it is a good idea to get to the right place in your follow through which no one has mentioned and it will make you close the club face without thinking about it.

Bill what's the right place I've never been told that?

For the longest time I could only play if a draw if a hole demanded it. I seemed to pull it off in necessity. When I tried to make it my stock shot there was too many misses. Now its becoming my norm.

I still don't understand why anyone wants to hit a draw into a green unless you are going around a tree.

A draw has no backspin on it so to speak.

I mean it looks pretty and all but other than that, it's not something to strive for.

Start hitting a few duck hooks and you will find out what I am talking about.

Or ask Ben Hogan.

My buddy is a 2 handicap and he hits draws into every green and I have never seen him have a problem holding greens.  I don't want to do it cause it looks cool I want to be able to start the ball in the middle of the green and draw it towards the pin.  I don't know what you play I play a fade and your duck hook thinking is no different than a slice.  My buddy believes that its easier to shape a shot than play a perfectly straight shot at a flag so I want to be able to shape shots both ways its not like I'm going to play a draw all the time.

One of the drills I do with my golf team gets them to feel an inside out swing and hit some draws.  Address the ball as you normally would, then completely turn your body away from the target (almost as if you were turning to shake hands with someone looking down your target line), then turn just your head and shoulders back to the address the ball.   At 1st you will hit many fat shots but once you are making good contact the ball should naturally draw.  Hit a few balls this way then try to duplicate the swing path with your normal setup.  There is surprisingly not much, if any, loss in distance hitting the ball with your stance turned.  I use this drill myself at least once a range session and it really works for me, hope it does for you too.
