Where? My "Definitions" doesn't list a definition for "ball."
Sorry Zeg, but RoG define 'a ball' accurately to be a golf ball conforming with the Rules.
5-1. General

The ball the player plays must conform to the requirements specified in Appendix III.

Note: The Committee may require, in the conditions of a competition (Rule 33-1), that the ball the player plays must be named on the current List of Conforming Golf Balls issued by the USGA.

This is the only kind of "ball" the rules recognize.  Regardless of whether they refer to "the ball" or "a ball" it is still a ball which conforms to the specifications in the appendix.

There is one exception which I remembered a bit later after having wrote my message to Zeg. If a player makes a stroke at a practice golf ball during his round it is concidered practicing even though that ball is non-conforming.See Dec 7-2/4 ( http://www.usga.org/Rule-Books/Rules-of-Golf/Decision-07/#7-2/4 )
