switching from righty to lefty a good idea (for a lefty?)

I did probably 800 drills with the kick ball so far since my last lesson, and took the ball with me to the range and met a LH friend over the weekend.

I was consistently striking the ball 125-140 yards with the TM R7 six iron.  A couple errant balls, but most had a slight draw
Towards the bottom of the bucket, I used his Adams G2 10* driver twice.  425 total yards and a very slight draw.
Also for the last 10 balls I borrowed his Nike Ignite 8, 9 and PW.  I really liked the weight, feel, and performance of these clubs.  Never thought I'd say this as I have never been a fan of their shoes.
So I am very excited and the feedback so far is all positive.  Wish I had tried LH clubs a long time ago, but then again, maybe the timing now is just fine.

425 yards with a 10 degree driver? Not bad :-) In any case, that's how I felt getting left handed clubs. Cool that someone else had the same epiphany.

and the positives keep on a-rollin'.  New, good news and great news after my latest lesson.

My coach was happy to wrap up my latest lesson and inform me that in only 8 days I have already advanced beyond where I was as a righty.  EIGHT DAYS!  The shoulder turn is actually higher now than where it should be, but will get corrected by itself once we correct the hip turn/crash of my leg.

And although I am still struggling with my grip - a tendency to let the grip slip back into my palm on the right hand - it is amazing how that can impact crashing and hip turn.  We corrected for that and coach said during a few practice swings he saw signs of where I want to be once we've retooled.  That was a second dose of encouragement.

Correcting the crashing of my leg and hip turn though is going to take some time.  Widening my stance slightly and closing my left foot slightly already made me more stable. The drills right now feel more foreign than ever, but its a process.

switching from right to lefty so:

tinkering with a plethora of equipment and brands; I now feel like its all about mechanics and less equipment- stay tuned

keep in mind that was the total of both.  2nd drive probably went 225 or more.  I was as nervous as can be - no one but my wife had seen me swing left handed before - I fully planned on shouting 'mulligan' as I was making contact

Also 100 reps where I clench a kick ball with my arms to reinforce not bending arms/begin backswing with shoulder turn.  Take a few swings into the net, then 100 reps.

So are you swinging with the clenched kick ball?  any pics/video

Here are two images.  My wife shot video, but she was holding the recorder on it's side and I don't know if there is a way to rotate the video 90 degrees

This is the clench ball with the knees drill.  I do this similarly to the clenched ball with the arms drill.

In this drill, I take a practice swing (holding an iron) five times, then simulate the resistance with an actual swing. Repeat

so are you actually swinging the club while clenching?  I did this a few times today using a soccer ball between my arms and it felt ok- definitely felt like my shoulders were more rounded forward and likely kept my arms from getting too separated from my body.

  • 5 years later...

I'm a lefty who swings right, even boxes with a stance of righty (left is strong hand). Currently thinking of golfing from left because lower body difficulty playing righty. I've shot low 80s, broke 80s 4 times in 10yrs, but have many inconsistencies.

How long did it take some of you to feel comfy n play good golf changing sides? At mid 40s, I'm wondering if it's worth it

Thanks In Advance

I would film both swings and look at flexibility. If you have a more full shoulder turn to the top and smoother/faster body turn on the downswing one way vs. the other, switch to that way.

I can hit lefty and was a switch hitter in baseball, but my shoulder turn lefty is way lower.

I'm left handed, defiantly left hand dominant, and never swung a golf club left handed before today because I had a hard time swinging a bat left handed as a kid.  I batted right handed full time, and never gave it another thought.  Then took up golf in college, using right handed clubs as well.

I'm 7 weeks into taking lessons and we've been at an impasse now with my lower body moving and my coach had me swing a left handed club for him.  Without thinking about it other than the grip, I just swung a few times and was AMAZED at the lack of movement that has been plaguing me for weeks in the video I saw.  The grip is odd, gut I can feel my left hand pushing the club through the downswing.  I say that because my right hand always felt passive before - this was a new sensation.

He asked me if I was willing to try using the left handed club for a week just to see. I'm willing to give it a try.  What do you think?

Sounds like your coach is Shawn Clement.

    • The MTB Prime and Prime X had issues with the cover being too soft and getting cut too easily. They said it was more prevalent in the Prime than the Prime X which I found odd because that was the exact opposite of my experience.
    • Day 120 - Played 18; much better than yesterday. Miss right now is off the heel of the club, so I need to sort that out.
    • Today we played Pease Golf Course in Portsmouth, NH. Course was in great shape but my game didn't show up. I will say I pitched and chipped fairly well but almost everything else was very hit or miss. Cost myself a lot hitting an in play drive with pulling my approach shots maybe 85% of the time. Finally figured out I had been swaying most of the round. Only took me until 13 to figure it out. Used what felt like a much more centered turn and the ballstriking improved. 18 tomorrow using a 2 man scramble format. Just looking to contribute. Been a blast though.
    • Day 22: Hit balls with 7-iron using mevo+ to track dispersion. Was out for a long time after work; 86 balls but the first 50+ were 50% swings focusing on top of backswing feel and then just hitting the ball as a psychic reward. Finished with 20 balls close to full speed. Pretty happy with dispersion and also no horrendous misses. I’m chunking my priority piece out into two separate feels, first and more important is the position/balance at top of backswing which is what I was working on. Once I have that engrained I’ll move to transition part.
    • FWIW I never really had issues with the previous generation of Snells. But… I'm not sure I played them a ton, either.
