Ping i20 Irons - Help

31 posts in this topic

I've been swinging the MP 63 irons all year and, though, I've had success with them, I probably need something a touch more forgiving. I hit the 6-PW great and basically am in love with them, but when my swing isn't there, I might mishit them a little bit. The 3-5 were pretty inconsistent and I hit good shots with them, but the mishits were harsh. I've been told to try out the i20 irons and I was wondering what changes I will notice when switching to them. Feel free to say whatever, thanks.

The only thing that holds me back is when I have my MP 63 8 iron in my hand, and I flush it, nothing feels better. I just wonder if I will experience that with the i20s. Also possibly a loss of distance.

Yeah, what he said.  I've had mine for about 2 months now, and they are fantastic.

I feel the same way about the i20's as you do about the Mizuno's.  In fact, I felt that way about my old irons as well (DCI 981's).  I think all good irons are going to feel great when you flush them.  The big difference between my old player's clubs and these "game improvement" irons is on the mishits.  I can hit these pretty far out on the toe (waaaay further than the DCI's) and still have it feel solid.  I don't even realize it was a mishit sometimes until I look at the mark on the club.

I also can't imagine you would lose any distance.  The lofts are a tad strong compared to your average player's irons, so I'd say, if you notice any difference at all it's going to be a GAIN in distance.

What shafts would you recommend? I already know I don't want the CFS, and probably not Project X's. I was thinking either the KBS C-Taper's or the DG X-100s.

I wouldn't recommend any because everybody is different.  Go test a bunch out on a launch monitor and see what works for you.

When I got fitted, I learned that my ball flight tended toward the low side, and I ended up with KBS Tour 120's.  I did a side-by-side with the NS 950GH and my ball flight was much lower.  (10.3 launch, 17 yd max height, 153 yd carry for 950GH vs. 14.7 launch, 27 yd height,179 yd carry with the KBS - both 7 irons)

I game the I10's and hit the I20's in store, the DG300 shaft was solid. The X100 is the same weight but a stiffer tip I think. When I ordered mine, I ordered the stiff AWT shafts and I have a swing speed a little too fast for those shafts. If you are hitting the X100's now I would go test the DG300 vs the X100. I bought some DG 300's but I kinda want to try the X100's before I make any changes myself.

It has been 150 carry, I am not sure on the SS.   I think with my swing changes my carry is more now, but I am not sure yet.  Today it was around 160 on the range.  The S300's might be a bit stiff for me over the stock ping stiff shafts, but I like fighting the ball lower so I am happy with them.

Thanks for all the responses. I did get a chance to hit them in a simulator and with the x-100 shaft, I was hitting a 180 yd 7 iron, so I ordered the 4-PW with the DGs.

I bought the i20's in March....Struggled at first, had the i3+ before, now it is ubelievable, the best irons I have ever had....Played today and my buddies are amazed, two clubs difference...I love when they ask what club I hit and they are hitting a "6" and I am striking a "8"....to be fair I went to my pro and worked real hard on my swing and I have gone from a 16 to and 11 hcp. I bought 4-PW, green dot, +1/4 inch, steel shaft....I really wish I would have not gotten the 4 iron and put another wedge in my bag....How is everybody faring with the U and S wedge, should I by them to match my others or go with the other Ping wedges? Thoughts???

As far as feel goes, the i20s should be somewhere in the middle compared to the Mizunos. They might not feel quite as good when you absolutely flush the ball but they won't feel nearly as harsh when you mishit it either.

I have the I10s and the UW wedge came with the set and I do not use it at all. I use the sand wedge all the time for 90-115 yard shots. I love the sand wedge but it is just like all my other irons. My 60 i a vokey and gets used more than any club in my bag. I think you would not go wrong with another ping wedge though.

i just bought the i20s.  although, i hit the 63s at golf galaxy the other day.  my game is really not good enough for a true blade, but i was impressed how well i hit the 63s.  they felt amazing when i had a good stroke.  the i20s don't have quite the same euphoria, but i only strike the ball in the near perfect zone 65% of the time, and blades would have been a mistake for me.  so i say if your striking ability is like a snake then stick with the mizunos if you think they feel better.  however that goes without saying that the i20s are still awesome.  i'm still not quite sure i understand why they are classified as player's irons, as they aren't blades and they are just as forgiving as GI iron like the g20 (okay maybe not just as forgiving, but darn close).

Yeah you could say that again. I have the i20s that I did decide to order and it's like im hitting hybrid irons. I am not used to them at all, but boy do they have forgiveness. I never hit bad shots anymore. They might not be good, but not bad at all like last time. I hit the i20s very high, though and I do not like that even with the DG x-100s so I'm ordering some KBS C-Taper Shafts to put in to get the flight down and less spin. I was testing them out and they are sweet.

I am starting to think I should accept the high ball flight. No ping putter? Wth?

I hit mine very high also. I have the true temper zz-65 shafts too. I like the height actually, really helps with control onto the greens, though you do that at the expense of losing a few yards with each club.

    • I hit 60 LW (when I can hit it) about 60-70 full.  55 SW 80-90 54 SW 90-105 PW (used to hit it) 110-120 but struggling with it recently. I either pull it hard or shank slice it right. It's driving me crazy because I used to be automatic with it.
    • I'm not nearly as consistent as the previous two guys, but I'm typically 10-30 yards shorter with my 3 wood depending on the day and conditions. I could probably use 3 wood instead of driver a majority of the time and still put myself far enough off the tee that I'm not at a significant disadvantage, but honestly I'm not really any more accurate with it than I am with the driver so it's not really worth the loss of distance most times. As far as asking what loft you should look at, it's very difficult for anyone to really answer that because it would depend on the technology in whatever driver you went with. Some do better with higher loft if it's a lower spin model, while others will be better with lower loft if it's more of a mid spin model. Not to mention that shaft flex/kick point/tip stiffness etc all have some impact on launch and spin numbers. Your best bet, if at all possible, would be to find a place that has a launch monitor and a used club selection that will allow you to test as many options as you can.
    • I only have 2 wedges at the moment, I need to add a gap wedge. PW - smooth swing 135, 140 is max yardage SW 56 degree 110, 115 is max yardage clearly there is room for a 50 or 52 degree which I think should put me right about 120-125. Being 6'4" with really long arms any only being in my mid 20's has its advantages. Typically 1-2 clubs further than most of my playing partners, shot direction is a different story hehe
    • Full Swings PW (Mizuno MP53) 120 GW (Mizuno MP53) 110 SW (Callaway Mack Daddy 2) 100 LW (Callaway Mack Daddy 2) 85   The LW has become more and more versatile for me and I use it for 40-90 yards much of the time now...Really liking it.
    • Perfect.  Exactly what I was thinking.  I was also rooting against her as well for the exact reasons you stated.  If she had handled the rules infraction like a honorable person, I wouldn't be thinking negatively towards as I do today.  I know she is a good golfer...but now whenever I hear her name all I can think about is how many times has she adjusted her ball on the green.  She ruined her reputation with me(not that she would care) in ever being someone I am going to pull for.  I don't care that she is from the USA and is a great golfer.  I would root against her in a Solheim cup.  If she had behaved and reacted in the way that you mentioned...I would not harbor the thoughts that I do in my head when I hear her name.  There is nothing that she can do at this point forward to wipe her reputation clean with me.  She will always be a rule bender in my eyes.  The apologists for her in making her to be the victim are simply wrong in so many ways....
