Not sure if this counts, but I caddied for Steve Nicklaus (Jack's Son) in the nationwide pro-am a couple years ago.

On the 18th hole one of the days, he his approach shot from about 150 to 2 ft left of the pin and 5 ft short (left himself with an uphill putt).  I said nice shot Steve, he goes, "No Paul, its short." I wanted to say, Sorry JACK my bad.  But I bit my tongue so I wouldn't get thrown off the bag.

He was by far the best 6 handicap I have ever seen. He was no Jack Nicklaus, but he reacted to bad shots as if he was.

How the heck can anyone w/ Nicklaus genetics have any handicap over 0?

From what i've heard, he is the only one of Jack's FOUR sons not to go pro! Its actually very funny.  But like i said, he was the best 6 I've ever seen.  He was a great ball striker.

Years ago, like in the early 90s, I played in the Palm Beach County Amateur at Emerald Dunes in West Palm Beach (awesome course btw). Since I barely made the cut I went off early on the final day. When I finished my round, which was a smooth 84 or something, I went over to the first tee to watch the leaders tee off. One was Gary Nicklaus. Jackie Nicklaus (the son) was caddieing for him.

The first hole at ED is a short dogleg-right par 5, about 520y. Now, I'm not a long hitter & used Driver off that tee & still couldn't reach it in two. But there's Gary hitting a 3w off the tee. Jackie was standing near me & I had to ask him - "How come Gary's hitting 3 wood?" Jackie pointed to the stanchion with the hole diagram on it & said "See that water on the right? That's 310 off the tee. He can't reach it with his 3 wood." I said ahhh...but can he get home in two hitting 3 wood off the tee? Jackie looked at me & gave me one of those head-to-foot-back to head looks and said, "With an iron."

My only claim to fame in my amateur competitive career is I have defeated all the Nicklaus male offspring in competition - Jackie, Steve, Gary & Mike. They all played amateur events in Palm Beach County growing up. Of course, in each case they were like 14 years old when I did it, but still...

I golfed with Sam "Bam" Cunningham (personal friend) Randall Cunningham (his younger brother by 12 years) and Charles Barkley (before he sucked) at the Dunes in Vegas back in the early 90's. I have golfed with Randall several times and Sam a billion

Sure it counts! That'd be cool to have played with someone you may see on TV.

I was on vacation in Cabo a few years back and was playing the Nicklaus Cabo del Sol course as a single. I was paired with Bill Rogers and a friend of his. After the round I found out that Bill was the British Open Champion of 1981. Heck of a fine golfer and a nice fellow.

Reading through this thread its amazing to see the personalities that many have had an opportunity to tee it up with.

Alas, I've trailed behind a few groups that had a famous name but none in any group that I've played in.

I would like to offer this though as perhaps comparable.

Years ago when I was a kid I worked my way up the caddy ranks at Yale Golf Course.

As usual I showed up at the course @ 6:30 am hoping for an early morning loop - double bag / 18.

The Caddy Master / Starter called my name right away when I arrived -

I ran up the hill to the first tee and he introduced me to my players :

Dick Siderowf who had one of the most illustrious amateur careers in the U.S and his partner that morning,

#42...Jackie Robinson.

Dopey kid that I was it never occurred to me to ask for an autograph from either at the end of the round.

Probably one of the reasons the Caddy Master asked me.

    • Day 113: 4/18/24 Stack training progress check after finishing my 6th program, and 4th Full Speed Spectrum Training session, which is recommended for my next program.     Gained 1 mph with driver, 195 g, 95g. Maintained with 280 g , and gained 2 with 145 g. Lost 1 mph on both lead and trail arm. Felt like I lost distance in my last round…
    • Please forgive the sweaty shirt.  Just got off the treadmill and decided to do my Evolvr drill.
    • I'd agree that 4w seems like the right play here. I'm not a course designer or anything but that hole looks like it could be so much more fun if everyone played from those front 2 tee boxes that are right outside your shot cone and they cut down most of the trees down that left side of the fairway. That would give risk reward to long hitters who want to try and push it up to that left fairway, allow more players to reach that second fairway, and still allowing it to be perfectly playable for someone who only hits driver like 150yds off the tee.   Yeah it looks like 4iron aimed at that inside edge of the right bunker is the play there, especially if you don't expect a 20mph tailwind again. If it is down wind again, 5iron would be just fine too, it'd still get you inside 150yds for your approach.  Keep in mind tee marker locations too, you measured that one from the back so if those tee markers are moved all the way towards the front of that box then 5 iron is probably best just to be sure that right bunker is never in play.
    • Day 1: worked on my drill for my arms.
    • Hit my tee shot just into the penalty area and barely found it. Swung hard just in case I hit it. It was slightly downhill with a heavy tailwind. I don't actually hit my 9i 170 yards.
