My Swing (jbishop15)

So, I've finally come up with a feel that works for the arms portion of the backswing (weirdly enough, it came last night at about 2 am when I was working on a screenplay):

The feeling I'm working off of now is to feel as if my right arm/shoulder/hand/forearm area is totally relaxed. When I do that, the shaft points left. When I involved my right arm, it goes across the line. Why? I don't know. But it works.

I've got good feels for this work, and I've made good progress. I'm playing in my club's Member-Member tournament tomorrow, partnered up with my father. It'll be a good warm up for my the ass-kicking I'm going to lay on the red team when I get to Arizona :-P

Yeah if it works, don't question it. Let us know how it goes.

My swing did pretty well this weekend at my club's Member-Member. I'm missing right, but as Erik suggested, I started palmer flexing on the way down and it all straightened out. Irons were crisp; maybe the best shot I hit these two days was a 6 iron from the rough, about 215 yards, to within fifteen feet of the pin. Driver was actually pretty good, but that was the club that I missed the right most on.

We shot 73 on Saturday (front nine scramble we were -1, back nine alternate shot, we were +11, we got eight strokes for our handicaps), and 69 on Saturday, with eight strokes. It was a lot of fun.

I'm feeling good. Continuing to work hard. I'll be hitting the gym and the course pretty hard for the next three weeks, leading up to the Newport. Really excited about my progress.

Pivot looks better, in my estimation. The feeling I'm going for in the backswing is to cock the wrists up and turn (which, if you've read the first page of this thread, is something Erik told me to do over two years ago [yeesh]).

Arms are still fleeing the body, but I'm really, really pleased with the work I've done.

I used to think I was a person that was open to change, but changing my golf swing has proved that to be untrue. If I'd just listened to you guys and Frank in 2012-2013, I'd be done doing this already!

But I'm listening now; I'm tired of screwing up :-D

That's exactly what he told me at my lesson a few days ago. I totally agree. It's very frustrating to hit the ball as well as I have shoot mid-eighties.

But that'll all change at the Newport :)

LOL

As the Red Team Captain I suggest you start spending 90% of your time on the putting green.

I got to the golf course at 12 PM today, and I just got home about twenty minutes ago. It's been a long day.

I spent 12-1230 chipping, pitching, and putting and 1230-2 hitting golf balls. I rested for 20 mins before my lesson at 230. Frank and I worked on swinging more left, as well as keeping the club more square going back. Basically, my feeling now is to dorsiflex the wrist up while the left arm goes in, and the left armpit stays tight (Hey, look! Another thing Erik told me to do!).

I took about a fifteen minute break after that, and at about 315ish, I worked on hitting pitches and flop shots; on my putting green, there is a really severe slope right in the middle of it that leads to a small flat spot and a pin. I made a game of trying to flop a ball just on top of that slope, and try to get it to run down that way. I was, uh, mostly unsuccessful.

At about 330, I went and got a cart key, and played nine holes of golf. I shot 40. My mother who had a lesson from Frank at 430, was still taking it when I finished (I got done at about 440), so I hit balls next to her while she finished up. After, he helped me out for a few more minutes, and then my mother, my father, and I played another nine holes. I shot 44 (couple stubbed chips and a few bad drives), for a total of 84.

I haven't spent this much time at the course in a long, long time. Back when I was in college, and trying to make the Georgia State golf team, I was practicing from 8 AM to 5 PM, hitting balls and playing 36-54 holes. I got down to about about a 4 handicap (I think?) but I didn't make the team. ANYWAYS, what I'm trying to say is that I had a great time practicing like that. It was about 80 degrees here today, with a slight breeze, and it couldn't have felt any better.

I'm probably going to do something similar tomorrow. Can't wait.

Hit on a launch monitor today for fun. Averaged 285 carry, 301 total. 111 mph swing speed, with a launch angle of 14. Pretty happy.

Pretty happy.

Ugh, that's horrible. Make sure to move you head forward on the backswing to get that launch angle down. Course will be playing hard and fast so the lower you can hit it the more it will roll.

:-P

I played golf today (and practiced) for the first time in weeks. The weather in Georgia, and the East Coast as a whole, has been atrocious.

I shot 44, amidst showers of rust as they slowly dislodged themselves. I'm working on getting my arm higher in the backswing; it had crept too much below my shoulder and my elbow was getting really stuck behind me. I wasn't hitting the ball very crisp, but towards the end of the round it started to improve. I was about 10-20 yards shorter than normal on the driver, which is to be expected.

I'm struggling with swinging out too much, which is one of the things that really hurts me under pressure. Gotta keep working on it.

I have GAME Golf now! Hooray!

Well, the app anyways. The cool equipment comes later. But I am definitely playing tomorrow, just so I can test out the app.

So, GAME Golf is a little unwieldy, at least when using the app. The scorecard was right at first, and then dropped six shots off my score for some reason. Had to edit, and the shot distances are now all screwed up. But whatever. I'll be better at it next time.

The round itself was atrocious; a +20 91. Christ. Everything was bad, and when my ball striking improved, my putting went to shit.

Just gotta keep working at it, I guess.

I think you do know, it's just that the website seems finicky.  Sometimes they work for me and sometimes they don't.  I tried to post a couple vids last night and had the same problem as you.  I will try again from my work computer this morning and see if there is a difference.

Shot 80 today; one of the best rounds I've played in a long time. I've put in a LOT of work trying to stop my club from getting across the line, and it's finally, finally paying off. Frank and I worked on getting the club more laid off on Friday, as I was coming in a little too steep, and it was causing a lot of weird shots.

I feel a lot more confident, which helps me score even better. I putted and chipped pretty well, but I left at least five strokes on the course strictly from not focusing properly. It wasn't as if I reached my limit, is what I'm saying; I felt like I had another gear that I didn't quite access.

I know my swing isn't perfect; I still get a little too inside in the early part of the backswing, and as a result I steepen a little bit on the downswing. But it's a hell of a lot closer than it has ever been, and I think I'm ready to move onto other things, like working on banking the right foot, and getting the club to exit a little further below my left shoulder.

But for the first time in a long time, I feel like I can do this. I've been struggling with confidence issues, and I'm finally coming out of it.

    • Day 106 - Worked on chipping/pitching. Focus was feeling the club fall to the ground as my body rotated through.
    • Honestly, unless there's something about that rough there that makes it abnormally penal or a lost ball likely, this might be the play. I don't know how the mystrategy cone works, but per LSW, you don't use every shot for your shot zones. In that scatter plot, you have no balls in the bunker, and 1 in the penalty area. The median outcome seems to be a 50 yard pitch. Even if you aren't great from 50 yards, you're better off there than in a fairway bunker or the penalty area on the right of the fairway. It could also be a strategy you keep in your back pocket if you need to make up ground. Maybe this is a higher average score with driver, but better chance at a birdie. Maybe you are hitting your driver well and feel comfortable with letting one rip.  I get not wanting to wait and not wanting to endanger people on the tee, but in a tournament, I think I value playing for score more than waiting. I don't value that over hurting people, but you can always yell fore 😆 Only thing I would say is I'm not sure whether that cone is the best representation of the strategy (see my comment above about LSW's shot zones). To me, it looks like a 4 iron where you're aiming closer to the bunker might be the play. You have a lot of shots out to the right and only a few to the left. Obviously, I don't know where you are aiming (and this is a limitation of MyStrategy), but it seems like most of your 4 iron shots are right. You have 2 in the bunker but aiming a bit closer to the bunker won't bring more of your shots into the bunker. It does bring a few away from the penalty area on the right.  This could also depend on how severe the penalties are for missing the green. Do you need to be closer to avoid issues around the green?  It's not a bad strategy to hit 6 iron off the tee, be in the fairway, and have 150ish in. I'm probably overthinking this.
    • Day 283: Putted on my mat for a while watching an NLU video. Worked on keeping my head still primarily, and then making sure my bead is okay.
    • I do not follow amateur or Korn Ferry tour but this story might get me to pay attention. At age 15 to be as accomplished as he is makes me think we may be seeing a future star.  A story of him breaking out may help reinvigorate golf viewership. Miles Russell has a hot start, cools off but finishes with a 68 in first Korn Ferry event Miles Russell, a 15-year-old Jacksonville Beach resident, made his Korn Ferry Tour debut on...
    • Day 8: Indoor backswing work, mostly rehearsals of takeaway. Hit some balls wtih 6-iron working on adding flow, but not too Much which I tend to do, swaying too far away from target.
