Man, they assessed Tianglang a penalty. So dirty. The kid is 14, and I know he isn't exempt from rules, but c'mon. Put him over the cutline as well, it seems.

In the Ogio Kingpin bag:

Titleist 913 D2 9.5* w/ UST Mamiya ATTAS 3 80 w/ Harrison Shotmaker & Billy Bobs afternarket Hosel Adaptor (get this if you don't have it for your 913)
Wilson Staff Ci-11 4-GW (4I is out of the bag for a hybrid, PW and up were replaced by Edel Wedges)
TaylorMade RBZ 5 & 3 Fairway Woods

Cobra Baffler T-Rail 3 & 4 Hybrids

Edel Forged 48, 52, 56, 60, and 64* wedges (different wedges for different courses)

Seemore Si-4 Black Nickel Putter

Ok, he's at the cutline, but if anyone goes to -7 he is out. Still a shitty thing to do to a kid in his first pro appearance.

I can't believe they assessed him a stroke!  I did some quick googling and it seems like he is the first player in 17 years to be assessed a stroke for slow play.  Anybody know if that's true?  If so - it seems completely unfair and ridiculous.

First player in 17 years at the Masters. Not the PGA.

He must have been warned, and still didn't speed up. Watching the amen corner earlier, he was taking forever at every shot. He shouldn't be treated any differently for being a kid, he is playing for the green jacket like everyone else, so should be treated like anyone else would be if they were playing slow.

I read the story on PGA.com and it didn't mention a warning. Not to say that it didn't happen (and I really hope it did), but as a sportswriter myself I think that really needs to be included in the story.

EDIT: ESPN just said that the group was put on the clock at some point earlier.

I feel about slow play the same way Mr T feels about fools... Let the penalties commence until slow play is eradicated, I don't care if it's Nelson Mandela...

I hate slow play. For being 14 he sure looks 17 to me. Still incredible play from a minor, just adding two cents.

Exactly! But, once a group is on the clock, it's on the clock I guess. That said, I wonder if Guan was the reason for the delay in that group exclusively, or if the others were slow too.

said he was warned beforehand.....wonder if they'd ever do that to Freddy because he's damn slow

It's really hard for me to believe that not one player over the last 17 years at the Masters played as slowly as he did today. I think he was more stringently watched because he is a 14-year old from China. But that's just me.

Guan just spoke on ESPN about the penalty and, I've got to say, he is more than impressive. Said the win was forcing him to keep switching club and that he respects the decision on the ruling. Said it won't put a negative light on his experience this week, even if he misses the cut.

I have to say, even if he was faking it, there are probably loads of adults that wouldn't have handled it that well. Maybe it's because he's a kid, but either way, it's awesome.

Loads of respect for him after hearing that interview. I still believe that had he been a 14 year old from Georgia, he would not have been penalized. I could be wrong.

I saw the same thing. Hats off to the young man.

    • Yes, this is the 2024 model. DSG ruined what Callaway perfected for most golfers. A darn good 3 piece golf ball. Now it's a 2 piece cheap ball. To me a 2 piece ball is fine and a 3 piece budget ball is better. I prefer a slightly harder ball, something in the 65-75 compression range that will perform similar to the old Gamer. The Titleist tru-feel is pretty good. I planned on giving Maxfli straightfli a try.
    • Is that the current generation Gamer? Another old standby for a firm and inexpensive ball is Pinnacle.  There are two models, the Rush and the Soft, but I don’t know what compression they are.
    • Good advice, but according to DSG website it is a 45 compression ball. My current ball is the Top-flite Gamer at 70. 45 is too low for me to go.
    • The 3 piece Maxfli Trifli is 2 dozen for $35.  The Trifli does not feel as soft as the Maxfli Softfli, which is why I like it. Other options would be one of the Srixons, which have a buy 2 get 1 free offer.
    • I have been carrying a 7 wood more often this year.  It’s especially handy if you have a downhill lie to an uphill green.  It’s also handy if the rough on the course is deep.
