I purchased blades early this year and added a club of distance. I can generate so much spin with them. My 4i often sits behind its pitch mark on long approaches. While my handicap may not reflect it, I have dropped 4 shots since gaming these clubs. My inconsistencies lie in the short game. Purchase whatever you feel confident standing over 220 out with a water carry and o.b behind :)

Lol ... Pretty sure somewhere north of 99% of people on this forum (or anywhere on the planet for that matter) aren't using ANY type of iron to hit that shot.

I suddenly get why the distance threads should reflect actual distances. Once you establish that you could hypothetically carry a 3i 220 yards, all the other posts you write need to reflect those previous posts. Yeah, 3W for me or splash.

Given the average driving distance for Amateurs isn't over 220 yards, I wouldn't recommend that

There is something to finding clubs you are confident in. I do believe that having a club that feels different on miss-struck golf balls can make a difference in ball striking. If you can't tell the difference between a toe and the sweet spot, then that might cause a bit of and issue trying to develop consistency hitting the sweet spot. There is something to be said though about having enough forgiveness that you're not loosing strokes as well. So, for me its finding the balance between clubs that feels good, looks good, and won't hurt my game. More and more pro's are going to blade looking irons, but with forgiveness technology. Like Ping i20's, they look very blade-ish, but it's basically a slight cavity back.

Just kidding... well I mean like not with my HUGE cavity back, the pw is messed up looking and it sucks up confidence, and most of those guys play small cavities like the ping i20

the pros that don't play blades play them because they either can't hit the sweet spot or can't/ don't work the ball

Did you know that somewhere in the vicinity of 65-75% of pros don't play blades anymore? (Based off an article I just googled from 2011, so the numbers probably higher now). Also, 75% of this years major winners (I think just rose plays rocketbladez, mick plays x forged, and duf plays ap2) don't play blades either.

I agree. The key word here is "forged" as that is what gives you feedback on mishits which is not as apparent in "cast". That, and the actual size of the club head. I worked at Titleist and hated it when they came out with the Oversize Plus Irons. To me, none have the feel of the DCI Blacks.  I also agree that starting out on "blades" will not make  you any better or worse than not. You will learn to hit whatever you started with. Would CB's make it easier? Perhaps.

I admit not watching enough golf, but the pros hit the pin or are pin high within 1 yard. If you strike a blade 1/8" off that's more than a yard. This is assuming you hit the sweet spot. I have 2 sets of blades and ping I20s. The I20 are SGI clubs and look nothing like a blade. The sole is twice as thick, and the face is about 20% bigger. There's a weight in the toe to help toe shots. Plus, the top line is much thicker.

I am. I'm hitting a 9 iron and laying up... 220 carry with an iron? No thanks for me. If I really needed a birdie and it was worth the risk, I would definitely be pulling a wood for that shot.

The majority of pros do not use "blades".

With your level of perfection, you should be on tour already.

Got to love this post.

FWIW (not a lot), Rose uses the Tour Preferred blades in the 7-iron down I think. Even Garcia (and he's a pretty pure ball-striker) uses the RBZ Tour now I think.

I've always used blades as they were pretty much all that were around when I picked the game up and I couldn't justify the price of Pings to my dad. Now, it's a lot about the look at address - I'm used to and really like the look of a typical blade-type iron. It's one of the reasons I hate typical hybrids although I have conceded to using Mizuno's MP-FliHi long irons. The modern Tour-type CB look pretty tasty to me now but I'm not ready (or can afford!) to splash the cash just yet. Reckon when my current (and the duplicate back-up set I have) MacGregors wear out, I'll go for some sort of modern AP2, Titleist CB or similar.

To the OP: On blades vs. cavities in general. Don't believe all the press about blades being hard to hit cf. cavities (as if cavities are sooo much easier) or being 'ready' for blades. If you like the look of some, go for it. You won't gain much from cavities instead. What did Trevino(?) say: Indian not the arrow? Or as an engineer friend of mine might put it: crap in, crap out.

Yes I should... But I think I've been cultured enough and realize I now know nothing about what I thought I knew

    • I have been debating getting a launch monitor of some sort, if only so I can re-figure my shot zones (I haven't actually mapped them in years) and also to practice distance wedges at home.  I have to see if this works with either my current setup, or what my setup would be if I move it to the garage.
    • Day 48, June 23.  After work today, I took 25 minutes in my practice room;  6-iron, same everything as yesterday except the time and count.
    • Well, this is interesting.  I think we discovered a few months ago that I haven't been following professional golf in a while (my confusion about Scotty's footwork confirmed that), so at least as I aim to follow a bit more I'll get something new to learn with all of you.  My very quick read of Erik's summary makes me think this new Challenger series fits somewhere between Korn Ferry and the Championship (not Champions, but I know I'm going to make that mistake a few times if I'm not careful!).   My recollection is that there were already second-tier events among the PGA Tour;  the Bob Hope didn't have the same quality of field as the event at Riviera (whose current name I forget, although now that I say that, I realize the Palm Springs event hasn't been called the Bob Hope in a few years either).   With the absence of the FedEx (if I'm reading that correctly), does that mean no more FedEx Cup at all? Hopefully I'll have time later in 2026 to sit down and see what we're in for in 2027, where one of my goals already is to follow more professional golf.
    • The highlights as I see them: Championship and Challenger Series The creation of the PGA Tour and the PGB Tour, in the words of Joel Dahmen a few years ago. They're calling them the Championship Series (23-24 events) and the Challenger Series (20+ events). Both run February to August. They feel this will achieve three things: increasing the consistency and quality of fields across the season creating a clear system for players to earn and retain status and delivering a more structured and competitive experience for fans and partners—all in an effort to strengthen meritocracy. Championship Series Structure and Eligibility The 23-24 events includes the Players, majors, season-ending events, and the Presidents Cup and Ryder Cup. These will be 72-hole events with a 36-hole cut to the top 65 and ties and purses of $20M+. 120 players without an alternate list. 90 players (roughly) from the previous year and 20 players promoted from the Challenger Series. Full eligibility will be finalized later this year. Sites (cities) to be finalized soon, but 10 of the 15 courses have already been determined. Postseason: includes retention and relegation and concludes with match play. The Tour Championship will also be played across a rotation of prestigious courses. Challenger Series Structure and Eligibility 20+ events. Running concurrently. Will feature players fighting their way back to the Championship Series or players graduating and on the upswing from the Korn Ferry Tour. Many of these events will be current PGA Tour courses. About 7 of the Challenger Series events will be during off weeks for the Championship Series with elevated purses and visibility. Purses of at least $4M, with cuts similar to the Champ series. 144 player fields. Competitive Fields for Both Series Players will be eligible for only one series at a time: Championship Series Players are not eligible for Challenger Series events. Championship Series members will have a known schedule with all events having the same eligibility. Players and Majors will have their own eligibility criteria. Championship Series players don't have to play all events. This begs the question about, say, the Canadian Open, and other "home-town" events that players might want to play, even if they're Challenger Series events. Will releases be granted? Promotion and Relegation At least 90 players will be retained in the Championship Series, and 20 players will be promoted from the Challenger Series each year. Battlefield promotion for two-time winners from the Challenger Series. Players relegated from the Championship Series will have a "last chance" opportunity to retain status, or will go to the Challenger Series. Criteria will be finalized before the start of the 2027 season. Points System New points system (not FedExCup points). Separate points systems for the Championship and Challenger Series. Elevated points in the Challenger Series for off-weeks on the Championship Series. More details tk. Elevated International Events in the Fall The fall schedule will include a limited series of elevated international events with top players from the Championship Series, with the intent to deliver in partnership with the DP World Tour as part of the Strategic Alliance. Last Chance Series The Tour will develop a “last chance” series of 4-6 events in the fall, with a limited number of spots on the Championship Series available for top finishers. Eligibility will include players relegated from the Championship Series, Challenger Series players, and other categories to be determined. Q-School continues, as do the Korn Ferry Tour and PGA Tour Latinoamerica. Also, Brian Rolapp is the new commissioner as of January 1, 2027.
