Hi All,

I'm looking for a used driver for a high handicapper.  I originally bought a driver off gigagolf (TRX 10.5 Pearl) and it just doesnt feel good (I do have their P3 3-wood and I absolutely love it, so not dissing giga at all).

I know the shaft flex and loft are key, so I'm probably going to try to find a regular flex in a 10.5 or 11 degree loft but is one line better than another for beginners?  I know the Ping G series irons are game improvement clubs, is their G series driver the same?

If I go to golfsmith and hit the newer models of the same brand, will that be a good indicator of which line I will like (hitting a ping G25 to see if I'll like the G15, etc)?

Right now I'm looking at the G15, the Callaway Diablo, or Taylormade Burner Superfast 2.0.  Any thoughts on those?  The Burner 2.0 is looking like the lowest price out of the three right now.

Thanks

Update: Found a used Adams Speedline F11 online for $55.  Adding that to the list of potentials.

It's always better to try a club first but buying one used makes it hard.  As far as where to look there's ebay of course and Global Golf and Callaway Pre-owned are good places to look.  Any of the big manufacturers are good and being a high handicapper you might want a driver with a draw bias.  I also think the flex and weight of the shaft would be more important than the head itself.

Leaning more towards the Burner 2.0 at this point. Going to go hit one this afternoon, might actually pull the trigger on a new one since they're on sale. Any reason I might want to stay away from this particular club?

Honestly, for a beginner, no point in spending alot of money on a top end driver - there are bigger fish to fry.     If you go to Golfsmith, find a clean used one you like the looks of that is in the right flex (regular most likely - now is not the time of your development to be swinging hard) and loft (10.5 to 12 is about where you want to be as a beginner).

Most important thing to realize is that todays drivers are just waaaaaay too long for the average player.     Especially for a beginner.      If you get a cheaper used driver, you won't feel bad by experimenting with the length - shorten it an inch, if its still too long, take another half inch off,e tc  (go slowly, don't want to end up much shorter than 2 inches off standard).     It's so easy to shorten & regrip golf clubs - tons of video's on how to do it - or you can have it done at any store - it's not that expensive.     Bottom line - as a beginner, you have to be able to hit the sweet spot of the club with an easy controlled swing - you'll be shocked how far the ball will travel when you hit the sweet spot with an easy tempo swing.     The easiest way to do that is to make the stick shorter.        Shorten whatever driver you get & you'll thank me.

a pointer from a F*^%#@^ P*^% off no hitting duffer J/K there is a lot to learn about a driver, ball placement on your stance to me that was big, slow down on your swing,  i know a lot more pointers are there. every time i go out for a round i tweek my swing and placement and it has shown resaults, no slice, a little more distance, another small pointer dont try to kill the ball. my .02

I'll definitely stick to the regular shaft flex, and I'll give the used rack a look when I go this afternoon. I just feel like it will be hard to pass up the new 2.0 at $150. Since I'm only 5'8" I might want to get the shaft shortened anyway.

i just bought the 2.0 tp flex it is a tricky club to hit again i worked with the ball placement moved it a little more forward and it straightened out no slice, distance not much more. its a nice club. the club is a little longer than the callaway i used to swing

Just because a shaft says "Regular" on it means nothing. Neither does the loft stated on said club.

Went to golfsmith, tried a Used 10.5 G15, a 10.5 Stiff Burner 2.0, a 10.5 Regular Burner 2.0, and a 9.5 Burner 2.0....

Didnt like the feel of the G15, the Stiff Burner felt like a board so I tossed that, so it was between the 10.5 and the 9.5.

Must have spent a half hour between these two, I felt like I was ballooning everything with the 10.5 (I have a 10.5 now and tee shots are very high), also the 9.5 seemed like it was going about 25-30 yards further on average.  I ended up with the 9.5 as it definitely felt the best, hopefully I don't end up hating myself over it.  With the sale they had going it was $129, which was actually cheaper than a lot of the big sticks on the used rack.

Will take it to the range tomorrow to see how I like it.

The TM Superfast 2.0 is a great club, I know a lot of people still using those cuz they are so dang fast. If you watch the pros close, I still see some of the guys ranked below 100 (not as well sponsored) still using them too. I actually stil have the Burner Superfast 1.0 and love that club!

Sounds like you made a good choice. Bombs away!

I can vouch for the Superfast line... I like mine for sure! I have the 1.0... has a max-size clubhead and a really big clubface, yet it doesnt feel as big as it looks... which is good...

I think almost any beginner can benefit from the superfast line if they feel comfortable with it. It won't kill your wallet for sure.

Hey, Brandt Snedeker still hits the Superfast 1.0. I saw it at The Masters, pointed like a child and say "Hey, that's my driver!"
