Does anyone else prefer higher lofted fairway woods to hybrids?

I'm older (54), tall (6' 2") and only 3 years into the game, but I find I have more consistancy and accuracy with higher lofter fairway woods than I do with hybrids. It may be that my back doesn't coil as much and squatting wears my back down over a round but I find myself getting less consistancy over a round using hybrids than I do with a longer shafted fairway wood.

Does anyone else prefer 7 & 9 woods to hybrids?

Also, is anyone familiar with Thomas Golf fairway woods? They have the only 12 degree fairway wood (200cc) that I've found. I'm considering it, as I started using my 15 degree 3 wood more off the tee for consistancy and I think the 12 degree 2 wood might improve my distance enough to replace my driver entirely, as I square the clubface better with my fairway woods and the loft is the same as my current driver.

I only this year changed my 7wd for a hybrid. I also hit 7wd a little farther and higher than my hybrid. I just found the versatility of the hybrids to be valuable as I have improved. I can work them a little bit easier and as the occasional escape club from the trees or whenever I need to hit a low shot hybrids are easier to do this with, not as easy as irons, but I can't hit a low shot with a 7wd period.

Does anyone else prefer 7 & 9 woods to hybrids?

I have a 7-wood & a 9-wood (well, I guess that's what they are: one has 22-degrees loft and the other has 25-degrees loft, but there is nothing on either of these Cleveland Launchers to indicate what # [5, 7, 9, etc.] should be assigned) in my bag. Right now I prefer them to hybrids, primarily because it doesn't seem to make sense to me to spend $300, $400, $500 or more to replace two clubs which are currently working perfectly fine for me.

I have hit a couple of hybrids (friends' clubs) on the practice tee (but likely not the hybrids that would replace 7- & 9-woods). I wasn't sufficiently enamored of the hybrids to cause me to go out & throw a lot of cash at replacing perfectly good clubs. At some point in the future (if/when the new equipment bug bites me) I am likely to seriously consider hybrids at that time, but until then I see no reason to abandon two old friends (Cleveland Launcher 22-degree & 25 degree fairway woods). And, actually they're not that old -- I got the 22-degree in 9/03 and the 25-degree in 2/05.

I know a guy who has 3, 5, 7, 9 wood. It all matters what you hit better. He hates irons, so he uses Driver, Wood, Wedge on par 4s. As for a two wood, Izzo makes one. It is called a ZWood. They have 2, 4, 6, and 8 woods.

A 2 wood is essentially a 3+ or 3 strong usually. I much prefer a hybrid.

Personally I carry a 3 wood (15*), 5 wood (19*) and 7 wood (21*). I also have a 24* hybrid. I find the fairway woods easier to hit consistently although I only got the hybrid 2 days ago and haven't hit it very much yet.

I've got a 3 wood (15*), a 5 wood (19*), and the 3 iron is 20*. I am on the verge of ditching the 5 wood and getting a fourth wedge (in the 51-52 range) because I almost never use the 5 wood in a job that the 3 iron can't do, and I could use the wedge for my short game.

Just considering my bad experience with hybrids though, I'd go with a 7 wood, even though there's nothing saying you can't put a longer shaft in a hybrid or getting it extended.

I have TM 580 3,5 and 7 woods and Cleveland Halo 1, 3 and 5 hybrids. I keep trying to replace woods with the hybrids but they are just not working for me; and I actually love hitting my 7 wood. The hybrids will most likey end up on ebay pretty soon...

Thank you all for your feedback!!

I'm getting some new information and I particularly appreciate the tips on IZZO Golf as another source of a 2 wood, the pointers on reshafting hybrids I already have" in stock (and I've got some I've tried but don't keep in the bag) and the reassurance I'm not alone in my preferences.

Starting the game at age 51 limits some of the flexibility I wish I had. I actually have more trouble maintaining a consistent stroke with my short irons than my long woods. Hybrids feel too short & I have squat lower than I'm comfortable with over 2-4 hours.

I find myself more comfortable using and sustaining a higher stance than I might have used 20-30 years ago. The longer shafts on my woods actualy seems to give me more, not less, confidence as I setup and I'm able to maintain a more a consistent swing if I don't put too much pressure on my back.

Control-wise, I've always been more consistantly straight and longer off a tee with a 3 wood than a driver. My 3 wood measures 205 - 215 and straight with a GPS measurement. That makes me REALLY happy and I think a 2 wood might improve my distance and maintain accuracy.

I may need to add a 2 wood soon as I'm currently using my 3 wood for almost all tee shots.

When I can hit my driver as straight & with better distance consistently as my 3 wood, I'll consider using a driver again.

Wm.
