I could use some Driver advice

Background - high-handicapper with lessons beginning in June.  I can't hit a driver to save my life.  Typical driver shots are heavy slices.

I currently have a Ping G5 driver with a stiff shaft.  It was a friend's but he has lent it to me indefinitely.  I am 100% positive that the shaft is wrong for me, as I need a regular or maybe even a light flex given my swing speed (Ping confirmed this at a club fitting). How outdated is the G5 in terms of technology? Does it make more sense to buy a new shaft, or would I be better off buying a "newer" used driver?  Any suggestions on specific drivers that I should keep an eye out for on the used racks?   Thanks all!

Driver -  AMP 10.5 degree

3W - :adams: Speedline Fast 12

3H  Baffler T-Rail

Irons - 4-PW  G20s

Wedges -  G20 54* SW and an old  Bazooka 60* LW that will be replaced next

Putter -  Scottsdale Y-Worry

I would lean towards buying a new (and by that I mean "new to you" but used) driver as it isn't very cost effective to re-shaft an older driver unless you really, really love it.

Also, I suspect you could find something a little more recent for the same $$ or less than the cost of an (uninstalled) shaft.

Awards, Achievements, and Accolades

I would buy a used driver with the shaft you need and go from there. Should be able to find something cheap. Alot of the guys I golf with buy the latest and greatest every couple of years.

How different is the G15 and G5 driver? Is the G15 more forgiving? If it isn't that noticeable, I'm thinking it'd be cheaper to re-shaft my G5, plus I could get a shaft fit for me for length and flex.

They are quite different. Better materials, newer technology. Expect much better mishits, but no more length on the good ones, really.

That said, the G5 is still a fine driver for a beginner, and I think your problems are more due to swing faults than the club. And of course, the shaft could be A problem, but its not THE problem.

In the Ogio Kingpin bag:

Titleist 913 D2 9.5* w/ UST Mamiya ATTAS 3 80 w/ Harrison Shotmaker & Billy Bobs afternarket Hosel Adaptor (get this if you don't have it for your 913)
Wilson Staff Ci-11 4-GW (4I is out of the bag for a hybrid, PW and up were replaced by Edel Wedges)
TaylorMade RBZ 5 & 3 Fairway Woods

Cobra Baffler T-Rail 3 & 4 Hybrids

Edel Forged 48, 52, 56, 60, and 64* wedges (different wedges for different courses)

I had a G5 and switched to a G10, then a G15. I like the G15 much better. It is more forgiving, helps reduce my slice and gives a good ball flight.

I bought the standard shaft.

I'd recommend buying a used G15 instead of reshafting the G5. The G25 is out, and a you should be able to find a used a G15 for a good price.

I'm a relatively new golfer and a HUGE Ping fan but I have had great success with a Cobra S3 that I bought used for $60. Read the reviews on this driver. It has an adjustable head and can be found online at globalgolf for $60-75. If you insist on Ping look for a K15.

You can find a ping rapture in about the same price range as what's already been mentioned. Try WWW.callawaygolfpreowned.com . They have used clubs from all different manufacturers.

ApocG10 is exactly right. The G15 is certainly more forgiving and will have newer technology. I have never been a ping fan but I have hit both the G10 and G15, they are both solid driver and provide a lot of forgiveness. You should check Ebay on both and see what you come up with.

I checked Ebay's completed listings on the G10 and G15 for you.

These are the prices they're currently selling for:

Used G10's: $30 - $40

Used G15's: $45 - $60

Here is a G10 Driver 10.5* Regular Flex - This model is a Draw, which will help your slice a little bit.

Just do a little research and you most likely could come up with a G15 for less then $40.

Hope this helps.

    • Day  3 (4 May 24) - Easy pitch day with 9i in the backyard.  Worked on staying smooth thru impact, keeping shots to 20yds or less.
    • From what I’ve read, it was in the manufacturing process and how the covers were nicking pretty easy.  He has had to resource his factory as the one used earlier is now a TM owned facility.  Initial reports seem to indicate the redesign is going to be a winner…
    • Day 129: 5/4/24 Stack training but could not certify my warmup speed. Dealing with a pulled neck muscle. Chips and pitches at a local course for about 15 minutes.
    • Typically less than 50. I find this can be affected by the "CART" signs on a given course. I don't like taking my rangefinder out of the cart and carrying it around to the green. I am very fearful I will leave it somewhere.
    • First ever holed out greenside bunker shot! It's crazy it took this long to finally get one during a round, but the cold streak is officially over. Hole 6 on the Palmer Course at PGAN. I hit my driver like 225 into a really stiff wind, then worm burned a hybrid into the bunker. I was about I dunno, 40-45 feet away. Birdie! Let's go! The red Xs the approximate location of each shot.  Really fun!!
