This is probably just a mental trick or gimmick for me, but if I'm not having a good day on the tee box, I will often go to hitting my 3-metal from the deck.

Subconciously I think it makes me swing a bit slower and more deliberately which leads to better tee shots.

Just wondering if anyone else has every tried this?

Yep definatly, there are certain holes where i wanna shape my shot and i use a 3 wood. There are days where i cant hit my driver and use my 3 wood. and there are days where i have broken my driver and had to use a 3 wood. And sometimes, you can actually hit it as far as your driver. Its a real helper.

I don't think that's what he was asking. I think he was asking if you ever play a 3-wood off the tee and off the deck (no wooden or plastic tee).

I always tee it up. Sometimes low, sometimes high.

I never not tee it up. I like having that perfect lie since I can't hit my 3-wood that well.

I second this. I really don't see the benefit in

not having a perfect lie when you're offered one. Now, you might tee it up just high enough to seem like a perfect fairway lie, but tee it up just the same.

I like taking a small diviot with my woods, so I tee it really really low just to "guarantee" a good a lie...but it's basically off the deck because I don't tee it high at all.

I don't use my 3 wood very often off the tee because my driver is already the best club in my bag and I probably hit it straighter then my 3 wood anyway...but if I'm having any off day with it, I'll go with it ocasionally.

I tee it up just off the deck so the bottom of the ball is right on top of the grass, but not in it. I like it to be as close to a fairway lie as possible.

I ALWAYS tee it up. Lower if I play it slightly back in my stance to play a lower more boring shot usually into a head wind or tee it up a little higher along the left heal if I want to hit it on an upswing to give it a little more height off the tee.

what's a 3 metal? I usually use a tee when I hit my 3-Titanium Composite from the tee, but typically, I play my 2-carbon hybrid off the tee and use a peg for that as well.

Sorry, but the "3-metal" term bugs me. It's almost as if the announcers on tv are now required to use that terminology just to appease someone. Personally, I'd like to go back to the mashie, spoon and niblick terminology.

    • Imma throw a dart in the dark as no one can tell what is happening once every fourth iron shot per your OP. This might sound counterintuitive but if ball position is too far back in the stance folks are known to throw down clubhead steeply. Could be happening. And yes, @billchaois not wrong; clubhead tends to bottom out wherever your pressure is. So slide forward (not sway), then hit.
    • Day 300 (!): did a stack session.
    • Day 24: Missed my weekly round due to a last minute little league makeup game this morning. Managed to get in some backswing rehearsals while grilling sausages for dinner, and then putted around the office/laundry room after dinner.
    • but I don't understand how that's possible you still want your head to stay back you don't want the upper body coming forward and plus I've tried feeling that and it made my fat shots worse and I then tend to pull and sky all my shots especially with driver because I get in front of it dont need force plates to see i finish on my left side
