There were already dried geese turds around the hole but then to make matter worse an Egyptian goose trotted up and shit right in my line on the 18th island green yesterday in Woodlands TX.  What's the ruling?

Penalty stroke for the goose? I will ask my coach, I am sure he has had this happen. We have lots of geese around here.

I am pretty sure that you can clean your line, no penalty.

I would imagine that goose shit is a loose impediment and therefore can be removed with no penalty.

First, let's decide what "Egyptian goose shit" is:

Loose Impediments

Loose impediments ’’ are natural objects, including:

  • stones, leaves, twigs, branches and the like,
  • dung, and
  • worms, insects and the like, and the casts and heaps made by them,

provided they are not:

  • fixed or growing,
  • solidly embedded, or
  • adhering to the ball.

So, if it's a loose impediment, what is our remedy? See Rule 23. Fair enough, though some impracticalities may still exist.

So, what do you clean it with?

Your partners putter?

Why's it gotta be Egyptian? You have a problem with Africans? Lol... JK! :-P

You're most welcome. We each learned something new this morning. For me, I now know what an Egyptian Goose is. I've been to Egypt many times, but don't recall having seen one ... guess I'll have to visit Texas to see this creature.

http://www.chron.com/life/article/Non-native-Egyptian-geese-proliferating-in-Texas-2252113.php

They are becoming common in Texas around ponds and of course golf courses.  They are native to Africa around the Nile.  Used to be worshipped in the eras before golf.

Since in Colorado  it would be Canada goose turds, and since those are loose impediments, find a sanitary way to move them.  The real issue is when you get a goose whose loose impediments are really loose....  yuck!

    • @DeadMan, I think your approach makes sense. As @dennyjones said, consistency is the key.
    • Day 204 (22 Nov 24) - Weekly men’s group round today.  Temps in the upper 40’s, WNW winds 5-15mph - was the old man in the foursome (next youngest is my junior by 10yrs) - held my own against them.  Iron play getting more consistent -seeing predictable ball flights and distances. While the consistency coming around still had sone solid negatives as I had two dbls and one triple. On the plus side - eight pars and one birdie.
    • I don't think anyone will really care.   It's your call.  Just be consistent.
    • I agree, until we are watching the 18th hole in the dark or waiting for the champion to finish and it's been 5+ hours
    • Question for the group. The course I normally play at has 27 holes - 3 9s that they use to for 18 in the various combinations. Is it okay to declare* if I’m playing front or back when I play 9 on this course? I’m figuring I need to declare before I play a shot. *meaning just say to myself that this is the back 9. Curious what people think. Of course, my only holes left are 13 and 17, so I’m going to declare the back 9 for the rest of the year. Probably only one or two more rounds though.
