According to this blog post, the average review takes just over 2 minutes. Change the format to replay officials (similar to college football), and I think you can cut that down significantly. But for argument's sake, let's say the amount of time for a review doesn't change. In 2013, the average NFL game lasted 3 hours and 10 minutes and featured 1.6 reviews. Let's say the number of reviews goes up to 10 per game, which is probably a stretch, you're looking at about 18 more minutes. You're now looking at the average NFL game lasting 3 and a half hours. Not a material change, especially when you consider that added time comes with more accurate officiating.

Yeah ... the average time was 3:10 for the actual game plus 50 minutes of complaining about all of the bad calls.  Now it will be 3:30 with only 10 or 15 minutes of complaining afterwards, so the overall time out of your day will be shorter. ;)

6 hours was obviously a hyperbole, but it would make a game that is already bordering on having too much down time have even more. Comparing it to college isn't accurate, because they don't review penalties either.

All it should mean is that TV takes such opportunities for commercials.  Now they have a score - commercial, kick off - commercial.  They would be able to continue the action more around scoring plays and use the review time for commercials.  Also since we a talking about real time reviewing, the time required for such decisions should be only marginally more than what we already see for the between play replays.  Just time enough for the booth to contact the referee and reset the ball and down according to the new information.

In preparation for the Super Bowl, here are a few articles from one of the best football analysts around, Chris B. Brown, aka "smartfootball". No lame narratives or attempts at fueling a controversy, just knowledge bombs being dropped.

On the Seahawks side:

This one breaks down how Pete Carroll's twists on some standard defensive concepts and how they've made Seattle's D so tough.

For the Broncos:

Manning will obviously be their guy, so here is a piece talking about some of the concepts Manning made his name with in Indy, and has brought over to Denver.

Really awesome stuff if you are into the X's and O's. I've learned more about strategy reading Brown's work than I did in 6 years of organized football. Enjoy!

Great post @uno6518 . I love this stuff.  I love the X's and O's stuff and wish the media would do more.  A couple of weeks ago a local Boston station asked Belichick about offenses.  He went into detail about the Tom Landry Cowboys offense and how intricate it was.  It was fascinating.

I don't think any intelligent fan thought that Carroll was a horrible coach in NE, just that he did not have the players to fit his D and he did not know enough about offense.  Our GM at the time was dense.  The media tend to blow things up, which I can't stand.

The Seahawks have a real good chance of slowing down the Manning offense for a couple of reasons.  First, the cover corners can limit Thomas and Decker with just one corner each freeing up the safeties.  Once Talib went out, the Pats had no answers with there young secondary, especially with Thomas.  The looked lost and Seattle will not.  Second, the middle linebacker is key to disrupting the "Dig" play and any crossing route.  He has to read the play, but disrupt the crossing route.  The Pats had Collins, a rookie, in that spot and he did not react well to any cross that Thomas had.  Manning ate him up.

My worry for Seattle is their offense.  Wilson is young and has not looked his normal self the last few games.  When the Pats had Gronk in November, it was easier to attack the Denver D because of the match-up.  Without Gronk and limited wide receivers, it was easier for Denver to take away routes.  Seattle relies a lot on running the ball, which I think is Denver's defensive strength.

Joke posted on Seahawk Facebook page: Tom Brady, Colin Kaepernick and Michael Crabtree walk into a bar.  Bartender says "You must be here to watch the Super Bowl".

I though it was funny, anyway.

Super Bowl Media Day from Richard Sherman's perspective...

I am camera shy.  (Video camera)  Whenever I go to a wedding and somebody starts walking around with a camera and a microphone and asks people to say a few nice words for the bride and groom, I take that as my cue to go to the bathroom or have a cigarette (I don't smoke).

This picture ... terrifies me. :bugout:

P.S.  Where are they doing this?  Is this at MSG??  Izod??  It's obviously not outside at Metlife. ;)

Prudential Center in Newark. Izod seems like it would have made more sense. It's right next to MetLife, and no one really plays there anymore. (I'm sure they had a reason though, it's not like they just forgot about the Izod Center. :-D) http://www.sbnation.com/nfl/2014/1/28/5347492/super-bowl-2014-media-day-schedule-streaming-richard-sherman-press-peyton-manning-

Marshawn Lynch in an interview with Deion Sanders was hilarious. He dropped some absolute gems. I'm just bout that action boss.

Deion: “You look good.”

Marshawn: “S***, you do, too.”

Deion: “You’re kinda shy.”

Marshawn: “Nah.”

Deion: “You just don’t wanna talk, really.”

Marshawn: “I’m just ’bout that action, boss.”

Deion: “You just like to do it.”

Marshawn: “That’s what it is. I ain’t never seen no talking win me nothing.”

Deion: “Well I respect it.”

Marshawn: “You want something, you go get it. Ain’t no need to talk about it.”

Deion: “It’s on your back. They feel like if they can stop you, they can stop this team.”

Marshawn: “Well they gon’ have to stop all of us. I’m a piece to it, but we got some dogs.”

Deion: “You don’t like podiums, do you?”

Marshawn: “Nah, it ain’t my thang.”

Deion: “What is your thing?”

Marshawn: “Lay back, kick back, mind my business, stay in my own lane.”

So Lynch is essential the polar opposite of Deion Sanders.

Exactly but I feel like it backfires because he is getting so much attention for trying to stay out of the limelight.

Unless someone shows me the RAW file, I have to believe that this is a Photoshopped collage.  The lighting/white balance is different from one face to the next.  Just doesn't look like a natural photograph to me.  I could do a better job of cutting and pasting than that.

Well, it is a press conference and they could very well have some lighting set up in various spots around the stage.  Photoshopped or not, the view from the stage of a press conference like this would still give me nightmares.

    • The highlights as I see them: Championship and Challenger Series The creation of the PGA Tour and the PGB Tour, in the words of Joel Dahmen a few years ago. They're calling them the Championship Series (23-24 events) and the Challenger Series (20+ events). Both run February to August. They feel this will achieve three things: increasing the consistency and quality of fields across the season creating a clear system for players to earn and retain status and delivering a more structured and competitive experience for fans and partners—all in an effort to strengthen meritocracy. Championship Series Structure and Eligibility The 23-24 events includes the Players, majors, season-ending events, and the Presidents Cup and Ryder Cup. These will be 72-hole events with a 36-hole cut to the top 65 and ties and purses of $20M+. 120 players without an alternate list. 90 players (roughly) from the previous year and 20 players promoted from the Challenger Series. Full eligibility will be finalized later this year. Sites (cities) to be finalized soon, but 10 of the 15 courses have already been determined. Postseason: includes retention and relegation and concludes with match play. The Tour Championship will also be played across a rotation of prestigious courses. Challenger Series Structure and Eligibility 20+ events. Running concurrently. Will feature players fighting their way back to the Championship Series or players graduating and on the upswing from the Korn Ferry Tour. Many of these events will be current PGA Tour courses. About 7 of the Challenger Series events will be during off weeks for the Championship Series with elevated purses and visibility. Purses of at least $4M, with cuts similar to the Champ series. 144 player fields. Competitive Fields for Both Series Players will be eligible for only one series at a time: Championship Series Players are not eligible for Challenger Series events. Championship Series members will have a known schedule with all events having the same eligibility. Players and Majors will have their own eligibility criteria. Championship Series players don't have to play all events. This begs the question about, say, the Canadian Open, and other "home-town" events that players might want to play, even if they're Challenger Series events. Will releases be granted? Promotion and Relegation At least 90 players will be retained in the Championship Series, and 20 players will be promoted from the Challenger Series each year. Battlefield promotion for two-time winners from the Challenger Series. Players relegated from the Championship Series will have a "last chance" opportunity to retain status, or will go to the Challenger Series. Criteria will be finalized before the start of the 2027 season. Points System New points system (not FedExCup points). Separate points systems for the Championship and Challenger Series. Elevated points in the Challenger Series for off-weeks on the Championship Series. More details tk. Elevated International Events in the Fall The fall schedule will include a limited series of elevated international events with top players from the Championship Series, with the intent to deliver in partnership with the DP World Tour as part of the Strategic Alliance. Last Chance Series The Tour will develop a “last chance” series of 4-6 events in the fall, with a limited number of spots on the Championship Series available for top finishers. Eligibility will include players relegated from the Championship Series, Challenger Series players, and other categories to be determined. Q-School continues, as do the Korn Ferry Tour and PGA Tour Latinoamerica. Also, Brian Rolapp is the new commissioner as of January 1, 2027.
