Disc golf anyone?

12 posts in this topic

I recently moved to Texas for a fresh start and left most of my clubs in Michigan. Got into disc golf as it's cheaper to start fresh and most courses around Austin are free. Just wondering if we have some fellow disc golfers on the forum? Austinites are encouraged to share!

Sweet jesus. I have 4 discs! Looking to get a 13 speed driver soon. Being in the Metro Austin area, we have like 20 courses within 45 minutes from me. I read your post in the disc golf group. Any luck getting a course built nearer to you?

Not yet. :-(

I don't throw much over speed 9 or so. Consider those speed ratings more of a speed requirement , like how you wouldn't use an XX flex shaft unless your swing speed is 120+ MPH.

I almost won a long drive comp against my buddies today with my buzzz throwing it for ~300 ft. Playing my buddies destroyer, ape, and boss,I'm leaning towards purchasing the boss. Should help me get to the basket sooner when we play from the tips. Avenger SS is my fastest disc at the moment.

300 feet?  You can throw those things over 100 yards?!   Wow.....

I can throw a putter that far if I get a good rip on it.

The world record (admittedly, it's in the desert, on a windy day) is 855' or so. Pros regularly throw drivers 450' or so if they're given enough airspace (no trees) to do it.

But 300' is still pretty good. There are a lot of people who play a bit and still don't even throw that far. My brother-in-law, for example. :)

P.S. I love my Avenger SS. Consider a Lace. They're high speed but relatively easy to throw. My 170s flip to flat, and my 174 is more overstable for a mild headwind.

Played my bud's 172g champion boss today. Never threw a disc that far in my life! Finally made two par 4's on my home course birdie-able. Once I go to disc nation for a new disc I'll compare the lace and boss side by side. (They have a driving range to test before you buy :-P). It's a pretty looking disc from what I've seen!

I've been playing for about 4 years now but pretty much stopped after starting up golfing this year. I'm very casual but consider myself pretty darn good. I only bring 3 discs with me, Blizzard champion Katana driver, Champion Spider mid-range, Aviar putter. Carry those in one hand and a brew or flask in the other.

It's fun and it's free, but I'd rather be golfing. Sadly I can't get all my friends into golfing so that's when I go disc golfing.

The next event I'm planning to play in is the Ice Bowl the weekend after the Super Bowl. I'm hoping for unusually warm weather. :)

    • My home course has marsh or a wide ravine running across 6 of the 9 holes, 4 of which are in front of the tee boxes (no real room/advantage laying up). Some of us get like 200 yards of carry on our drives and one of those 4 has about that much marsh. Even on holes that don't require a good drive, playing from the tips can mean carrying water to a tight green or fairway with a long iron or wood off the tee instead of a mid or short iron. Not saying that's anything special for better players, only that it adds a little extra challenge to those of us less skilled when we know we have to hit our distances with those longer clubs. All I'm saying is carrying those hazards isn't as much of a concern when playing from the forward or middle tees. That said, looking over the other courses I play, you're right, most are not that bad.
    • Well, I wouldn't go around moving just any ball, but with the right circumstances, it can be warranted.  And, as @drmevo pointed out, since you knew it didn't come from your hole, then it wasn't going to be playable from that spot anyway.  No need to even mark, just kick it aside, hit your chip and then put it roughly back where it was. Actually, neither have I, but I know that if it ever does happen, that's how I'd handle it.
    • I was thinking the same thing.  I can't possibly think of worse things to wear then jeans for golf.  Has to be horribly uncomfortable.  I live in the PNW.  Off season i usually either wear a base layer under golf pants or wear some heavier wool trousers on occasion.  honestly if its any colder then that im probably not playing.
    • I rarely feel rushed.  But i am a fast player based on what i see around me on the courses.  I think the course does play a part in it.  Courses that have long distances between green to next tee definitely take longer to play.  Some courses that have alot of big hazards can make it longer also.     When i play in a 4 some with my boss and a few other managers at private club we usually play in about 3hrs walking or riding.  its always empty in front of us.  All 4 of us are reasonably quick players that play ready golf.  We visit alot and have a good time out there, we just seem to move along at a good pace.  The course helps in that its a short walk green to next tee box.  Easy walking course and laid out user friendly in that way..   The muni that i play alot is usually 4+hrs.  Honestly when it starts pushing out towards 4.5hrs or so it starts to be a drag.  I'm not a huge fan of constantly waiting.     I used to be in a mens club and played club events.  But i stopped because the 5+hr rounds were killing me.  All those guys have played the course plenty of times, shouldnt take that long to read putts or decide club off the tee etc.
